Replacement of Blue Spruces
Comments (6)Thanks for you comments. I really appreciate it. It is really hard for me to visualize what the landscaping will look like in 10 years. I usually buy perennials that I like, and then find a place to put them, moving them if needed. The spruces were mature trees, and last winter we noticed all three losing needles in huge sections. I was hoping it was seasonal, but they continued losing needles until one side was almost bare, and then the front started losing needles from the bottom up. I assumed that it was either the drought we had the previous year, or perhaps just old age. I didn't notice any obvious bugs or disease. I would love to put in some rhodies, but I don't think they'd like the hot sun all afternoon. I will have to look and see if there are some which kinda like the sun. I'll look into the shrub roses as well, although I'm not sure what they'd look like in the winter. I'll also look into andromedas as well. I'm thinking, if I have enough room, maybe I need to have 2 rows of shrubs, one sun loving facing the road and evergreen, and then one shade loving facing the house. Comments (13)There are plenty of folks with extensive education that are unable to solve life problems or lead people. They cripple under the pressure. Some of the smartest people I know don't have degrees. Anyhow someone answered your question on your previous post. When JB mate they congregate on the west side of plants....doesn't matter what they are. Feeding is a different story. So mystery solved. No one sprayed your spruce for cripes sake, lol. Bayer Multi Insect Spray will kill them (adult beetles) on contact. They may not drop dead instantly but they will die pretty kick. I just had to spray my Cupressina spruces. They were loaded with ants, a sure sign of aphids. Sure enough those buggers where everywhere. I don't spray willy nilly but I do when I need too. I do have admit the whole hit the spruce with a broom and catch them with a sheet was a silly suggestion for a plant with razor sharp needles. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/pests/msg0612304310652.html?4...See MoreNorway / blue spruce planting concerns
Comments (4)Do as ye wish, but fertilizing at time of planting is not a recommended part of tree installation. If very moderate, probably no harm done, but tree roots actually grow faster in low-nitrogen soil environment. I'm not a fan of "terrasorb"-like products for this usage either. More than I want to go into here right now, but very funky stuff can happen with those items. Don't unplant just because I said that, but I sure wouldn't use in the future. As a root dip-to keep moist on the back of a truck or something-fine, but that's the very fine grade, not the larger particles suggested to be added to soil. I tried terrasorb heavily in a bedding plant and container situation in 1990/1991! Never went back, as it did not materially affect the frequency of need for watering. If it didn't work (and was expensive and may harbor pathogens) why use? +oM...See MoreBlue Spruce fungus, or insect?
Comments (2)Blue spruce are prone to at least two needle cast infections caused by fungus. In some areas of the country this apparently has become a major problem. The usual course of the infection is the needles taking on a pink or purple coloration followed by rapid loss of needles. There is a good deal of information online about how to deal with these infections. In brief, treatment consists of pruning out and disposing of the affected branches and spraying with a fungicide such as Daconil. Your county extension service can help with the proper timing of sprays for your area. Treating small spruce is quite possible and effective, but becomes much more problematic when the trees become large specimens....See Morechester_grant
