Need help with my Styhl HS56 Hedge Trimmer

My Styhl motor is going through problems. When first used after the Winter Break, it started easily and ticks over well, but when warm and used on full throttle, the engine dies. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Please give more history how it has run season to season plus more w/problems:
1. Age or seasons of use
2. Use and store with fresh treated fuel
3. Inspected all fuel lines and primer bulb
4. Tuned with new fuel/air filters and spark plug
5. Disassembled and cleaned/adjusted Carb
6. Tweaked high and low carb adjustments.

Thank you for your interest. The motor is 5 years old and is used perhaps 10 times a year. It was serviced by professionals this time last year. It has had old fuel in it over winter, but since the problem all old fuel has been cleaned out and new fuel added.All fuel lines and the primer bulb are OK. Air filter has been cleaned and the spark plug checked. The carb has not been cleaned as I am unsure as to how you dismantle it! The high low adjustments have been tweeked to the best performance, but regretably this has not solved the problem!
It could be dirt in the carb, how do you clean it? Are there any instructions anywhere, certainly the manual is no help?

uhf1483-don't give up, you are right, there was real quality in the OLD homelights. I have a st-155 trimmer, 20 years old and never replaced anything except for ONE sparkplug!!! There is a compound called 'doorease', it is a silicon based grease stick for lubricating latches, window glides (etc). If you rub this compound religiously on your starter ropes. ie.(before every third or fourth use) and spray silicon liquid lubricant into the take-up mechanism on your starter take-up reel you will NEVER replace another starter rope, this is a FACT. Sorry, I have no info. on parts.

I have the M242 with short reach articulate hedge attachment. Come out to be like the AHS242. I really like it. The problem I have is the gas filter work itself into the neck of the tank and won't get gas. String two of the 1/4" nut onto the line close to the filter will help a lot. Shindaiwa have promotion on the M242 or M2510 all the time with free string trimmer attachment. I got that off this promotion and I think it's worthy.

Hey Nate I forgot to answer your question directly. I think the cordless trimmer is very useful. Even it is 18V, it would be a looooot lighter than the gas engine trimmer. You are talking about 12 lbs. I don't know whether the battery ones will ever trim as fast as the gas but for finishing touch, it is very very useful. I just planted a Hollywood Juniper and trim as a pom pom tree ( few poofs of green at the end of the branch ). It is going to be hard to swing the big gas trimmer around to trim this. Also I am planting 10 of the Boxwood at the back and going to shape it as a round ball of about 24" diameter. That you need a light short electric trimmer also. I don't think my low voltage Craftsman can do it. I need something of a 18V with about 12" to 16" blade. Make it less than 6 to 7 lbs. That would be perfect. Of cause, the lighter the better. Still interchangable blade will be very useful. I never run out of battery yet. YOu can never have one trimmer fit all. YOu always have to have a gas for fast trimming and the small one for touch up. Don't think you can get the speed with a battery trimmer. Corded trimmer is absolutely out of the question.

Of course in the garden you wouldn't keep mowing them off down low, at the same even height - unless they were bedding roses, that were being pruned short anyway. Without ever removing any stems at all. And the fact remains that with all kinds of woody plants the more you cut away of the top (or roots) the less growth (and therefore bloom) you get afterward. Until the specimen replaces the same volume of top that was there in the first place. So if the most possible bloom is the objective then the greatest amount of top that can be managed will be desirable.

1. If it's still starting and runs ok except for full throttle, ck vent on gas cap by loosening cap. Ck Spark arrest on muffler, carbon will cause back\-pressure. If carbon is present, heat the screen red with lighter etc and brush cln after cooling.
2. Did the old treated or untreated fuel dumped show any signs of trash or etc??
3. Was treated fuel left in it over the winter? Add an once of carb cleaner to treated fuel (if ethanol) and try it. Let it sit 8\-24 hrs try it.
4. If no improvements but still idling but starving at high throttle the int fuel screen could be dirty. Removing one screw has allowed me to see most screens once the carb is off (\#22). At that point I’ll use small wire and compressed carb cleaner to verify all of my ports are clear. If you decide to go that far you should be able to find a youtube to see the process of cleaning your specific carb.. I d/n see a specific but related info at the links below. My attachments will show the one screw to enter the carb and see/cln the fuel screen.
5. A complete rebuild is a big question or challenge to many that are new to the process vs buying a new carb. In my opinion, I would quick ck the int fuel screen if needed vs a complete rebuild. With your recent service I hope you possibly face cleaning at the most.
