viburnum renewal advice

Marie Tulin

I cut back an overgrown viburnum "Chicago Lustre" and neglected to take care of it after that. It is now a stump with a hundred 1 foot shoots. I am supposing I should prune out most shoots and select some to grow as the new framework. Please give me advice on how to do that and how to continue to shape the shrub over the next few years.

It is not in an optimal location but I think it is too big to transplant easily. I'm not sure I'm willing to kill it trying, but I am considering it. Is it as rugged as most viburnums?

Any other advice besides "what have you got to lose?"

Thanks,

Marie
