kwanzan cherry tree transplant
Comments (4)ther than keeping it well-watered, should I fertilize with a high N fertilizer, or just leave it alone? I dont want to kill it with kindness, but I really liked the tree. ==>>> you are on the verge of lovin it to death i dont care where you post.. but this isnt treated as a fruit tree.. and there is a tree forum ... let me clarify why nitro is not useful ... nitro stimulates green growth ... you lost your leaves.. because you cut off 99% of its roots ... using fert to stimulate green leaves.. will de-stimulate its need to GROW ROOTS ... make any sense ... all that.. plus IMHO.. trees NEVER need fertilizer ... other than actual FRUIT PRODUCTION trees .... but that aint you ... focus on what need be done.. grow ROOTS!.. and all the tree needs for root growth .. is water for that ... and if it thrived for 2 years.. i will not agree you have sterile soil ... so fert isnt needed ... and next time you want to move a tree .. do it in FULL DORMANCY .... rather than after bloom and leaf out ... it spent all its stored energy blooming and leafing.. and now it has no roots ... to process water ... if you perfect TIMING.. the whole process is much more forgivable ... good luck ken ps: NEVER fertilize a stressed tree.. and your is stressed from transplant ......See MoreSingle apple and single cherry tree
Comments (6)If you want a cherry tree that doesn't get too huge, you probably don't want a sweet cherry. You want the species called sour, tart, or pie cherry. The classic variety is Montmorency. I had one that produced lots of fruit with no trouble for years. I hear there are some new varieties with fruit sweet enough to eat right off the tree, but I haven't tried them. Most places, it's impossible to grow nice apples without spraying various chemicals on them, so decide if you're willing to do that. If so, you have a ridiculous number of choices, so you have to narrow it down by what you like in an apple. If you don't want to spray, there are some new disease-resistant varieties, but even they can have insect problems. Anyway, I really like Goldrush, because I like crunchy-hard, intensely sweet and tart apples, but that's just my own preference. Is there a farm market near you where you can taste local apples this fall?...See More3 problems - apple bark, cherry branch, tree not growing...
Comments (8)you dont want to take the time to rotate the pix.. but i should take the time ... blah.. blah.. blah ... 2nd pic.. why the giant staking procedure .. how big is that tree. and how long has it been there???? is this a fruit tree or an ornamental flowering cherry???? third pic.. any conifer that does not grow is dead ... but dead ones cna hold their needles for a year or so.. until hot weather browns them.. and makes them fall off ....is it supposed to be yellow??? or blue/green ... but dead ones.. eventually shed leaves ... i say.. rotate this pic.. and post it in the conifer forum ... [what the heck did you edit out of that pic.. lol.. the neighbor standing in your pic with a silly grin????] i know the first pic is a problem.. but i am blanking on it ... ken...See Morebrown leaves tip- cherry blossom kwanzan and Cherry tree
Comments (10)It's probably the heat. Cherries don't do well in the heat. It should start to get better by the end of September if you keep the tree consistently watered. If you really wanted to go out of your way to tend to the tree, you could mist the leaves during the middle of the day (sometime between 12:00 to 4:00 ). I've even heard some people have very lightly sprayed their trees with mineral oil, or lightly rubbed some petroleum jelly onto the leaves, to help keep them from drying out. It's the height of summer right now, and a little browning is to be expected. San Jose has clearer skies than San Francisco, so less protection from the sun. In short, what you are seeing is perfectly normal for the climate you are in. There's a reason most commercial cherry orchards are based in Michigan and Eastern Washington. Also, in San Jose (all the paved surfaces in the surrounding area has an effect on temperature) it's quite likely your kwanzan trees are not getting quite the degree of winter chill that they would prefer. This results in slightly reduced vigor, and that is also associated with browning of the leaf tips. Your tree should fair better in future years when the roots have become more established (and they can provide a more adequate water supply to the leaves)....See Moreforever_a_newbie_VA8
