3 problems - apple bark, cherry branch, tree not growing...

Hi all,

Went out and did winter pruning today. It was too early i'm sure, so i hope i didn't hurt my trees too much. Can't help myself starting everything early.

Anyway, have a few pictures:

1) Gala apple - has areas all over the tree where the bark is split like the picture. Anyone know what is causing this and how i can stop it?

2) Cherry tree. I have had 2 main branches go off the main leader, but i've always wanted a 3rd to even the tree out, but the little runt branch just won't grow. i have that problem with another cherry too. little runts around the crotch between the leader and the main branches. can i do anything to spur growth of these runts? or should i just cut them off?

3) this diadora spruce has not grown an inch in 3+ years. since the needles are on i guess it's not dead, but any thoughts? i know this isn't a fruit tree, but these were my 3 problems today. thanks!!! (apologize for not rotating pics properly)

So strange you posted a picture of your Gala doing that, mine looks almost the same except I see silvered, dead-looking wood under my splits. Branch tips seem alive, though. The root stock area on my looks the worst, so I'm curious whether it will make it through the winter. Hope you don't mind me jumping on your thread, it just seems silly for me to ask the same question in a different one. Cheers!

you dont want to take the time to rotate the pix.. but i should take the time ... blah.. blah.. blah ...

2nd pic.. why the giant staking procedure .. how big is that tree. and how long has it been there???? is this a fruit tree or an ornamental flowering cherry????

third pic.. any conifer that does not grow is dead ... but dead ones cna hold their needles for a year or so.. until hot weather browns them.. and makes them fall off ....is it supposed to be yellow??? or blue/green ... but dead ones.. eventually shed leaves ... i say.. rotate this pic.. and post it in the conifer forum ... [what the heck did you edit out of that pic.. lol.. the neighbor standing in your pic with a silly grin????]

i know the first pic is a problem.. but i am blanking on it ...

Keepitlow, I'm not sure they're increasing on a global scale, it's just that societies are much more mobile now, and bring pests along with them, so that there is a larger diversity of pests here. A couple more imported pests that come to mind are Japanese beetles introduced in the early 1900s, and the very recently introduced spotted wing drosophila fly. Once introduced, it has generally taken a long time for some of these pests to become omnipresent. Codling moth, even though introduced with the first settlers, didn't find it's way to Kansas until 1850. Japanese beetles, even though introduced 90 years ago, are still not found in all KS counties today. However, in the future with our society even more mobile, it may take less time for these newly introduced pests to fully disseminate. OFM has become more of a problem due to mutation. Originally it was exclusively a stone fruit pest. In recent years it has become a pest in commercial apple orchards as well. I've also read it can be a problem in some home orchards where there are lots of stone fruit and apples planted together. To the naked eye, the larva are indistinguishable from CM. Lastly, introduced pests are not limited to fruit. Bedbugs have been practically unheard of here for half a century. Remember the old adage, "sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite"? That came from a time when people slept on hanging rope beds. Bedbugs could be somewhat thwarted by tightening up the ropes to prevent the bed from touching the floor. In recent times some hotels (even nice ones) have had problems with bedbugs being reintroduced from overseas travelers. That'd be a case where I'm going to kill some nature, and feel really good about it.

I see this sort of thing on my sweet cherries too. Notice how it runs along the grain. This is characteristic of bacterial canker damage, although that's not necessarily what it is, I think it likely. Also, the way the bark flares up on the sides of the wounds in the lower picture is also convincing. Notice also how it's healing in from the sides. My belief is that the disease is very active during moist, temperate weather that it likes, but then becomes less active during dry weather later in the year. During this latter time the tree is able to do some repair work, but the disease is still there gathering strength each year. Next year it may attack different parts of your tree. On your photos it looks like you can see right down to bare wood grain, all of the live tissue layer has been eaten away. That also makes me think it is BC.

Of all the possible fruits that you mentioned, raspberries will be the easiest to establish. They are a tough plant. However, the list that can handle zone 3a is very short. The best source of information on hardiness is the "Norse Farms" web site. They are a top drawer cane grower. You will learn much from their site. I selected Boyne and Autumn Britten. I'm very please with the Boyne. Both for flavor and hardiness. Autumn Britten has big sweet berries, but doesn't have great flavor. they are a fall crop and frost often kills the fruit before production is in full swing. I wouldn't do those again. For zone 3a hardy apple information you should look at the "St. Lawrence Nurseries" web site. They only promote very cold hardy trees. The trees that I bought from them were just so -so quality but you will get a great list of what varieties will survive in your area. Read everything that they have to say about cold region apples. Two things that you should absolutely learn from their site. 1) Dwarf and Semi Dwarf tree root stock will not make it in zone 3a. You must go with a standard size rootstock. Especially if you won't be around to coddle them. I have found their Antonovka root stock to be very hardy. 2) All quality eating apple trees are made from 2 different trees that have been spliced together. The root stock will determine the final size of the tree and contribute to hardiness. The top (above the graft) will determine the eating qualities. BOTH of these have to be zone 3a hardy or you trees will die. If you can't get verifiable info on both the root stock and the scion (the tree above the graft) your odds of getting a tree that will survive are slim. It wouldn't be like trying to get a tree to grow in the Metro (zone 4) area that would get watered regularly. Also, start will small trees. Larger trees need frequent watering to get established I'm have very good luck growing sour cherries as well. Many of them have the same sugar (brix) content as sweet cherry, but their high citric acid content still makes them slightly sour. Unfortunately... Birds, bears and deer al like them. If you want to know more about them search "Romance Series Cherries" and Carmine Jewel. These are all Canadian varieties of bush cherries. St. Lawrence is also a good source for in on hardy tree varieties. I'm growing 6 Carmine Jewel, 1 Northstar, and 1 Bali (Evans). I'd start with raspberries. If you don't win the battle getting them established, don't waste your time on the rest. Use RoundUp or some other brand of Glyphosate to kill everything in the planned planting area about 4 to 6 weeks ahead of planting time. Newly planted fruit plants just cannot compete against healthy native vegetation. Hope this helps.

I haven't been on GW in a very long time and am just getting back into gardening as the weather in Brisbane improves. I planted an apple tree in a nature strip a year or two ago, but I had to abandon the patch when a neighbour trashed the site with branches and prunings to discourage me from gardening there. Today, I went back and dug up the tree to plant in my courtyard. The tree had been growing in long guinea grass and still had bougainvillea prunings strewn over its branches. After I had planted it in its new hole, I noticed there was a soft rotting area of bark where the grass had been trapped by the prunings. When I rubbed away the soft outer bark, sections of the wood had been progressively exposed. The section of affected wood is on the trunk above the graft. I suspect this is collar rot or canker? The wound mostly looks like a large split running down the trunk and exposing inner sections of the wood, surrounded by the soft bark. The tree seems otherwise healthy, vigourous growth, and it has its leaves out, even in July. What do I need to do to treat the wound? Even if the wound does not seem to be affecting the apple tree's health now, could it shorten its life or cause problems later on? Corey

i am visiting my father, and he doesn't have any picture editing software, so while i tried to rotate them, i was unable. it's not for lack of trying.

the cherry is ornamental, but my home cherry which is fruit does the same exact thing. this tree is 12 foot tall, like 10 years old. my dad lives in a real windy area, so a couple years ago i staked it to keep it upright. the stakes are loose now and not doing anything.

that's really interesting about the conifer. that makes sense. i wonder if all conifers "candle". this one sure never has. the color is yellow/green which is its natural color. it has not grown for several years. my father has sprinklers on auto timer, so it's possible this thing has never gotten dry.

If using Windows you can rotate pics with just the windows software.

Pines candle, cedars don't.And I agree w/ ken -- the deodar cedar is a goner.

Well, since this thread was getting mostly critiques of how the photos were posted, I went further afield and found that bark splits are fairly common on young apple trees and often heal with no harm done. It can be caused by frequent thaw/freeze cycles, a lot of water after a long dry spell, or sunscald due to heavy pruning of the canopy. The OPs looks mostly healed over, mine, well time will tell. Cheers!

thank you sunnibel!! i think i've got 2 of my 3 questions answered. now i'd like to figure out why small branches around the crotch of a couple cherry trees i have never grow. i've not seen this branch behavior on my other fruit trees.

I've seen blue spruce with similar odd behavior and color before. It was usually caused by either herbicide damage or an iron deficiency.

Some of the trees I've seen with herbicide damage were goners, others did survive but still look really strange. The ones that were iron deficient recovered to start growing normally but didn't fully recover the weird growth after they started getting annual doses of iron sulphate. The soil they were growing on was around 8 pH which caused the iron deficiency.
