Ridiculously sloppy rim joist insulation job by insulation company

An add-on to their attic insulation job (50's ranch reno) the basement work is admittedly reasonable in cost, but aesthetically disturbing to me. No photo, didn't have a camera when over there today, but looks like a 5 year old's efforts. Picture a globby spray-can job like thicker than whipped cream spray foam around the perimeter of each bay, a solid foam board piece pushed into place over it, and another globby uneven layer around the edges of that. Not complaining that it won't be effective, only that it looks like hell. Seems to me there should be a way to make the spray-foam thinner or at least smoother and more even?? Would this be acceptable to others? Anyone have pictures of a neater application? For other reasons they had to leave part way through the job, so I want to educate myself about this before they return. Thanks for any help.
