Mad Men series finale...opinions....

I was extremely disappointed! Maybe I just didn't "get it" but I thought it was dumb. Love to know others' opinions.

I liked it! I assume we can post spoilers since the thread title is pretty clear. Did you understand the relevance of the Coke commercial at the end?

Coke--that was the advertising holy grail that they referred to all through the series. Peggy, in the finale, told Don that he could still come back, that he could work on Coke. The time period of the show was the same as the Hilltop ad, which really did come from McCann-Erickson, so the implication is that this is what Don would have worked on, or perhaps, given his new centeredness and bliss went back to work on. That commercial was a big deal at the time, and made a big impression. I thought it was a great way to tie a bow on the series.

I liked the finale. It resolved all the characters' stories without ending any of them. And that little smile from Don, who drifted into the retreat and only stayed because he had no way but a forced march in dress shoes to get out, then kind of found himself while he was stuck there and unable to run away from himself.

I agree with most of the posts above. And personally this type of decor is a bit too stimulating for my tastes...like a Montissori classroom. My take is that this is urban country 2.0. These houses are bright, have a lot of contrast and visual clutter. It is an inexpensive style to do. And it is interesting and allows for creativity. Here is also what I think is going on... IMHO, true country living and its decor (that is, one lives in a farm and has land, animals, gardens, crops....) the barn, shop, and mechanical outbuildings are considered to be functional and unless its a garden shed or summer kitchen, the man's domain. No frills, flowers, etc. allowed. Bt the farmhouse though also a working kitchen and housekeeping space is considered to be a reflection of the woman of the house. So it is more expected to have whatever decor the woman would want, as a comfort against the hard work the family does, and to be house-proud and family-proud. So the overall household would have a balance of masculine and feminine spaces.

There were some missteps this season, but I thought the ending was brilliant in that Don creates the famous Coke commercial. Despite the retreat , dabbling in TM, and his breaking down in the therapy session, none of his epiphanies have ever lasted long and this one won't either. In fact, it's over pretty darn quick when he's meditating on the beach and he's not thinking about his kids, his screwed up relationships, etc but instead the next ad campaign. He's not a changed man. He won't go back to NY and become a responsible father or find a mature, lasting relationship. He will continue to be a womanizer and drink to excess. His only success in life is his work. Sally becomes another tragic figure. She feels she must give up her life to care for her brothers. I think she will end up like Betty...cold and detached. Happy endings though....at least it looks that way.....for Joan, Peggy, Roger and Pete, although one wonders....has Roger really met a woman who can tame him or will he revert to his old ways? I thought it was a great ending but am still in mourning....I miss it already!

For me, the absolute champion, never-to-be-surpassed series is Game of Thrones. Great acting, great writing, intriguing plots, and beautiful locations. True, it is very violent, so I - hating "blood 'n guts" - spent a fair amount of time peeking between my fingers with squinted eyes. That said, it is epic, a story of human foibles and weaknesses and occasional courage. If you can cope with limbs being lopped off, of everything that could go wrong being shown on screen, and if you can follow the convoluted plot and myriad characters - I recommend it. imo there's nothing else like it. The dragons! DH and I also loved Mad Men. We came to it toward the end of its run, so there was a lot of binge-watching to catch up. It would have been my favorite but for GOT. We've watched many of the above-mentioned shows, especially enjoying Foyle's War.
