Acid loving, drought tolerant, native plants
Comments (14)My favorite native plant that I have growing in my garden in my false rosemary/scrub mint. It's drought tolerant, extremely hardy, blooms nearly year round, and the foliage has a wonderful fragrance when it's brushed up against. It also grows so thick that no weeds are able to grow through it. The only trouble is that is attracts a lot of bees so if you're allergic to bees I wouldn't plant this near a pathway or gate. I happen to like seeing all the bees that visit the plant. Altough scrub mints like full sun mine is planted under a crape myrtle tree and is thriving. This is a close up of the flowers. Another tough, drought tolerant native that would do well in the conditions you described is the wild petunia. You could also try beach sunflowers although they seem to prefer as much sun as possible....See MoreWho wants to help with this planting challange?
Comments (4)California poppy, given enough water, does very well. You might want to locate that near a drain or something. Deer don't touch my daylillies, but then there are so many other goodies around..... But your list looks reasonably deer-resistant to me. All that stuff will need to be watered regularly for the first year, and likely the second, but once established should only require an occasional soaking....See MoreHelp me pick a plant to finish the house border
Comments (7)What I first noticed when I looked at this photo was the foundation of your house, personally I would plan a flower bed that helps conceal it a little more. My suggestion would be to plant 2-3 small/medium sized round evergreen bushes under the window, transplant the hostas in front and move the azalea to right-hand corner of the house. Planting some perennial geraniums with the hostas would look great too I think. If expanding the bed and moving stuff around isn't something you're up to (and I wouldn't blame you) I would lean towards a rose bush like you suggested....See MoreCould you help me pick an office plant?
Comments (8)You can use the plant wizard below to view house plants by light level: http://www.houseplant411.com/pick-the-right-indoor-houseplant I feel like my office is pretty bright and it is ~14k lux and I am growing: Monstera deliciosa Philodendron Xanadu Chlorophytum Amaniense Syngonium podophyllum Sansevieria trifasciata One thing you got going for you is you can get the plant(s) close to the light and get higher light levels. Plants with low light requirements would be a safe bet, but if there something you like with medium light requirements I'd say give it a go because getting something you like and want is important. If it doesn't grow well you can probably find a brighter place for it at home near a window....See More- 9 years ago
