Singer Touch n' Sew 626-- bobbin doesn't spin at all

Hello,

I recently acquired an old Singer Touch n' Sew 626 from the 60's or 70's, and it seems to be in fairly good condition for the most part. However, the bobbin doesn't spin at all...

I was having a problem with the needle hitting the bobbin casing, and I eventually realized that I could simply turn the casing clockwise to resolve this issue; I can't remember positively if the bobbin was spinning before this, but I'm pretty sure it has never moved...

I took it apart and oiled and cleaned it really well, and I found some gears inside with busted teeth. I am wondering if that is why the bobbin won't spin? If so, does anyone know where I can buy new gears for this old machine? I hate to give up on it-- it seems to be really well made. Any ideas?

The bobbin case doesn't move, it stays put. The bobbin turns as the thread gets picked up by the upper thread. There is a hook and race that comes around with the upper thread, that is the part that moves under the bobbin plate. The touch and sew models have a very clever bobbin set up, it is a bit unusual and unfortunately I don't have something close to a 626 near me to guide you. It's not difficult though, and it's easy to follow the pictures in the manual. The bobbin case should click secury into position and the bobbin should drop in snuggly. Do a youtube search on Touch and Sew in geneal, it will likely have identical bobbin area setup. There is a tiny setting lever near the bobbin not sure what to call it, it has a flat round top, it has to be in the right position for sewing.

I hope you have the manual, double check threading. Also double check that the needle is put in the correct way, flat side facing backwards and needle threads front to back. The 626 model is the last of the all steel geared machines, it's a very good model, and I hope you know you have a machine worth spending time and money on. There isn't a single model made today with all metal gears, it handles layers of heavy to fine fabrics and it stitches very fine. If there's anything it is a bit more noisy than the the most silent Singer models, but it can be improved with oils like Triflow and Finish Line Ceramic Wet lube. They are perfect for vintage sewing machines, with added teflon and nano ceramics which add a noticeable smoothness to the machinery.

Remember to oil all the points shown in the manual, if it hasn't been used in a while, you need to give it a drop or two of oilk every where, run it a bit and then repeat the following days. Triflow and Finish Line Ceramic Wet lube are ideal, but any good sewing machine oil will do. You have a really nice machine, I promise :- )

the busted gears: where are they placed? I can't find a user or service
manual for this model on the web. I'm sure you will get it sorted out,
as I already said, this model is good enought to have serviced and
repaired professionally. With a bit of luck and effort a lot can be done
at home too :- )

I've been lurking on this forum for the last couple of days. This post and the picture have forced me out of lurkdom! I don't quilt but I LOVE fabric. So many great ideas already. I especially agree with the lighting. Yesterday at Home Depot I saw some halogen full spectrum lightbulbs meant to fit into regular sockets/lamps. Think track lighting with halogens (that bright white light) coupled with some light fixtures near your work space with the full spectrum/daylight bulbs. Track halogen kits are available at the hardware box sotres for under $50.00. Number 2 on my list is a CHAIR! I use a cheapo computer chair. I like the adjustable height and the casters. You can wheel from machine to machine or machine to iron!!!! Cheapo chairs can be had at the box office supply stores on sale for under $40.00. If you sew alot perhaps an even more expensive(more comfortable/supportive)chair would be worth the investment. Number 3 is storage. I collect/store large quantities of yardage for drapes, slipcovers and duvets, etc. I like shelves. My impression is that quilters tend to need lots of smaller pcs of fabric. I couldn't use paper boxes because I have to SEE the fabric. I think if the plastic bins can work for you these are a great solution. Ditto the ADJUSTABLE shelving to store them on. I really like the industrial shelving shown in the picture above. You can space the shelves close together and configure it to be tall and narrow or short and wide. If money were no object I'd probably consider buying one of those metal tool chests. I covet these!!! There are plenty of shallow FULL EXTENSION drawers for scissors, needles, bobbins, thread, etc, etc. Can you tell I want one of these?? If you can't spring for one of these (me either:()the plastic stacked drawers on casters can fit under a work surface. And speaking of work surface, have you thought about a hollow core door mounted on brackets instead of a table? The doors are light, cheap and come in a variety of widths. When you buy them you can get them without the hole for the knob. If you have a salvage building supply store, they are even cheaper!! They can be painted, stained or covered in fabric. I can see several doors mounted on brackets extending from the wall with the window. You could have all your machines set up and wheel from one to the other!! Too cool. Of course, paint, a few decorative items will make it truly yours. Good luck and sorry for the length:)

Depending on the age of the machine, it might be fixable. I would oil it well, and see if that helps. It might just be sticking because the old oil has dried up and gummed up the machine. When you turn the hand wheel, does the needle go up and down? The stop on the hand wheel might be on backwards. If you haven't taken it off, then that is not the problem. (That's the metal part that you unscrew to wind a bobbin.) I think about the mid 1960's, they started using plastic parts which would be dying about now. I have a Touch and Sew from the early 70's that still works, but it's been lightly used and always stored in the air conditioning. If you have a sewing machine repair shop, they should be able to repair it. I'm in Dallas, and I go to Mr. Sewing Machine on Harry Hines. They are a Baby Lock dealer, but repair all brands of machines. Just call around and see who will work on it. There are a couple of internet sites you might be able to get help. One is victoriansweatshop.com and the other is quiltingboard.com (vintage machine section). Both of these sites are generally good for finding info on older machines, but your machine might not be old enough to get help there. I don't do Facebook, but they should have some groups that might be able to help you. Look for Singer groups. Also, groups.io has some Singer sewing machine groups. Sorry I couldn't help more. All of my sewing machines are older than yours and I'm just not familiar with it at all. I'll check back and see if any of this was any help. bkay

Hi everyone.I have a singer 626 T&S. when I turn the wheel by hand towards me and the bobbin hook is at about 1 o clock, the wheel gets tight. I continue turning, its ok until I get to same spot. its been getting Jammed. the bobbin case seems a little loose. I timed it. the hook picks up Loop".Before" I put Bobbin case & bobbin back in machine, "it all works fine", & doesn't get stuck".As soon as I put bobbin case back in with bobbin", it gets stuck. I even turned right screw under slide plate, but it doesn't help. I've clean, oiled, re-threaded, put new needles in.I've tryed so many things.it was working good months ago, then, one day, it got jammed. Nothing in machine Looks broke. when I filled bobbin with thread, it filled about half way, then slowed down & stopped. It seems like its the Bobbin case, but it Looks like it's in great condition. I can't figure it out? Does anyone have any ideas to Help? Thank You.

childstar, I have some questions. i have several machines, including 2 Singer Touch & Sews. One is a 600E, which i think was made in 1966. The other is a 626, made in 1967. The 626 has nylon gears that fell apart in my hand when i undid the bottom to check. But the 600E has metal gears. Is it worth fixing the 626? And, if i see metal gears in the 600E, does that mean it is a good machine worth keeping?

Might be too late to comment, butcI had the same problem that the needle wouldn't pull thread up from the bobbin, and the bobbin doesn't spin. I was told there were broken gears. I opened it up and found PLASTIC gears, not metal. I replaced the broken gears. But it hasn't corrected the bobbin issue. Still doesn't spin. Time to admit it's beyond me & take it to a repair shop.

Some of the 626 have plastic gears, some have metal. I recently purchased one that has all metal gears.

There are various forms for so I machine repair and collectors on the Internet. Summer on Facebook (and I don’t know about those other than that they exist), there’s someone read it spelled it REDDIT, and there are a lot on IO.com.

I collect, use, hoard, resell sometimes, and am gaga Over vintage all metal sewing machines. The all metal ones just keep going and going and going and they are beautiful to so with and to listen to and to watch work. (I also have a few modern ones that do all nice fancy things quite well and some of them embroider.

If you need help finding links for the sewing machine forums let me know either message me or post here. (I don’t frequent a lot of the forums here much because I have some issues that keep me from contributing much so it may be better to PM me.)

I have a singer circa 1960s so I machine with plastic gears that runs really well but it doesn’t stitch because of a plastic gear that’s broken :-) I have not bothered fixing it. It’s sitting underneath a table somewhere. I have other things I have to attend to and it’s just not worth my time but some people have done this and have given me directions how to do it (years ago).

You can look on craigslist or Facebook marketplace for all metal so I machines that will do pretty much what you’re touching sodas but our less prone to breaking. The plastic gears are definitely a weak spot in those older singer machines circa mid 60s.
