Comments (7)My intention is to express that it's not a "plain old" type of switch, that it's a specialty device that you'll need to order. I didn't say it couldn't be done, it's just not a "plain old" type of job. You're still looking at a wiring job that'll require some electrical knowledge, and based on the original question, I suspect the poster isn't overly experienced in electrical wiring. I don't like to give people a false sense that something is easy to do. Electricity is nothing to fool with. Joe...See More3 way switch: if the lights work-does this mean it is correct
Comments (9)Cleo, you done good. A properly wired 3-way switch allows the light to be turned on/off on one end and on/ from the other. All 3-way switches have three wires, one being the hot and the other two are called travelers. There are usually two black wires and one red wire. The two travelers, red and black come from the same romex and the hot lead comes from another. The hot lead is attached to the bronze screw and the two travelers to the other two screws, one on each side. Doesn't matter which traveler goes where. Tell your freaking out girlfriends to find something else to worry about you done good....See More3 way switch wiring 14/3 all the way to the light
Comments (1)From the 2nd switch you only need two conductors, a hot and a neutral, going to the light. The hot will come from the "common" terminal on the switch. No reason to replace the cable, just leave the 3rd wire disconnected. Whomever wired it to begin with probably either had extra 14/3 around, or wanted flexibility, for example to power a fan and a light separately....See MoreCeiling Fan Wiring 3 way switch...
Comments (2)If we're talking about the junction box at the fan itself, most likely one is always hot because it was designed for the fan while the other one is switched for the fan light kit. If your fan doesn't have a second wire (that's not white, green, or bare) then both functions will be controlled by the remote (or pull chains). You can connect it to either the switched (black) or the unswitched (red) depending on what you want. The white and green go to the matching wires. The green should also be connected to the metal box ....See MoreDavid
