10 things I've learned as a first year gardener
Comments (26)camp, I didn't realize it either until researching online and on gardenweb. "What are these cabbage lopers of which you speak?" (what the heck is a loper?) ... OHHHHHH, those gross lil green caterpillars I keep seeing. Gotcha! This has been fun to read everyone's input. There are too many gems to point them out individually, but I've learned that not only are garden bloggers really nice and helpful (per thyme2garden) but they are pretty funny, too! It's too bad I try to share the humor with my non-gardening friends and family ... (um, ok, everyone not on here!) and they give me the blank "I don't get it," stare. Such is life. I highly recommend the archived "so you want to grow a gardenia" thread... I read that a few months ago and was CRYING it was so funny. (I didn't even know what a gardenia WAS until that thread.) And it has given me the courage to venture into growing flowers this coming year ... once I make the lasagna beds this fall for spring ... and build a few more trellises ... and flip my compost ... and ask the restaurant down the street for coffee grounds ... and.. and.. and.. :P Oh, btw. The tomatoes are starting (in case anyone was troubled by my plethora of non-ripening tomatoes.) ... The gardening gods like me (at the moment ;) ). Thanks again everyone for sharing - Veronica...See MoreFirst year in the SQ FT Garden...Fertilize??
Comments (9)Lissa, I wasn't using anything for fertilizer on a regular basis, then one day my 74 year old dad came out to the garden and (as usual) gave me advice, whether I wanted it or not. He said "Looks to me like you need to put some fertilizer on that there stuff, see how yeller them leaves are?" He has a very short memory, and had forgot that it had rained 6-8 inches in 2 days the week before.(Of course, I had already put miracle grow on the week before it rained so much). But, anyway - About a week later I put some more on there, and the next day he said "told you so, see how much better everthang's lookin?" I just smiled, and said "I can't do enough for you, dad." Oh well, helping me with the garden gives him something else to do, besides stir up the anthills in the yard with his walking cane. He says he enjoys aggravating them....See Morehelp!!! first year sfg and i need advice!!!!
Comments (5)me,cuz they only put on the label what is so much of this and that, HELLOOOOOOOO!!!!! what if its gonna kill my baby's???? i know soap and oil and water won't, LOL i know, i'm a little ( and that's putting it nicely LOL) about the insectisides, but i worry, i think it was the cat collar that threw one of my cats into a seizure for a few hourse, nothing the vet could do, and it was the right age for it. so i freak. Comments (3)Thanks guys for the replies :) Lucy,I dont know others didnt get a letter. However, their grills are still in the same place resting right beside the building.(not 25 ft away,LOL) I heard from one of the maintaince men that they have a new Property manager who is real anal about stuff,so that is probably why.He probably will say something to the others, mine is just right out there easier to see (I live right by the maintaince department)so he just got to us first. Appreciate you taking the time to help me with my question!!!...See Moremariorg
