It looks like a red maple, Acer rubrum. And those aren't leaves, they're samaras. The leaves hadn't emerged yet.

The tree flowered very heavily. That could mean something is amiss.

I dunno. Bark could be red maple. Something is wrong with the leaf or samara shape I THINK when I zoom in. Then again my red maple's leaves are a bit rounded....Why isn't every other one on the street doing the same?

Not leaves! Those are the samaras...the wings on a Maple seed. That what makes them spin when they fall. Red Maple.

After they spin, they fall. Then they root by the thousands and tens of thousands. They will drive you batty. You will pluck, rake, mow and swear.

Thanks! I think they are gorgeous and missed the falling/spinning leaves. The other ones bloomed later. This one has turned green, while the others still have some of the red color remaining.

As Gardengal said - the fact that this tree is covered in Samaras in February is weird and could be a sign the tree is under stress.

Compare your Red Maple in Houston with mine today in Maryland. Considerable natural variation is to be expected with this species which ranges from Quebec to Florida westward to Texas. I would describe this as a mast year.
