OLD Christmas Cactus....Anyone??
Comments (4)Well to get the one out of the philo. If you want to..just get a very sharp knife and find where it is rooted into the soil and cut out a little 'cube' of soil around it,cut down about 1 inch, and pop it out. Then you can pot it into a pot of its own. You wont hurt the philodendren. That plant is indestructable. IF you 'lost' the other cactus cutting that you put in with your other christmas cactus...does it have the shape of the new hybrids? If it does, then it isnt the old antique type that I am in search of. IF it has the 'claw like' look to the stem, and they stand upright. It is a newer hybrid. The one I am talking about is much smaller, hangs nearly limp, and has smooth sides. OR maybe the one in the christmas cactus pot, didnt root and it rotted? Thats why you cant find it.? Like me. I try to root in soil and it just dissolves and dies. Thus the reason I am in search of this old one. I emailed you in private as well....See MoreOLD FASHION X-mas Cactus, Out There?
Comments (63)The ones you sent me Nancy, are not in bloom yet. It might not have gotten cold enough to set blooms its first year here in Ft.laud. Sorry I lost your email address to let you know it is doing well. I still have the card/letter you sent me with the sections you sent me. I have lost a lot of the smaller cuttings over the summer, but the big one is doing well. I am watching for buds, my 'new' style X-Mas cactus' are setting buds, but it is not as exciting as waiting to see if I get any from my Old Christmas cactus. It reminds me of my gram/mom, and Conn. These new varieties don't. I almost bought a few of the newer varieties, on E-bay. But tiny 3 segment cuttings are over $25-50!!! Named ones like 'Samba Brazil', 'Inca Sun' and 'Aspen', and a few are $99!! For tiny segments. That is obscene!! How rare are these?? So...ill never see these in person, in my lifetime, in my collections....See MoreVery Old Christmas Cactus Help
Comments (6)Is the inside of the pot glazed as well. Many times the inside is not. If not and if the pot is not fired at very high temperature the plant is exposed to all of the elements in the clay. As an example, cheaper terra-cotta pots, usually Asian pots are not fired at as high a temperature as the European pots. Those terra-cottas build up salts in the outside much quicker. Often people think it is from their water or fertilizer, but most of the build up is the calcium and magnesium in the pot. In those those pots the calcium, magnesium and other elements are pushed to the outside of the pot. In pots that are glazed just on the outside the those excessive nutrients build up in the plant's soil. Excess calcium can cause problems....See MoreOld Christmas Cactus
Comments (15)Light would be problem only if it was kept in very low light before op received the plant. But even then, it is in the corner that cuts down on light. Light coming thru the window panes is much less intense too, and even more so if windows have any UV protection (we don't know that). I also see another plant that seems to be in front of CC. So light doesn't seem to be the problem. Karen is correct. I have large TC (not CC, but they have similar needs), that I keep outside, and it gets quite a bit of sunlight. Color of segments gets reddish, but they do not shrivell. As you can see, segments are not wrinkly in much stronger sunlight than op's plant This plant was given to me in 2012, and every spring it goes outdoors. I am not suggesting to do same, just pointing out what happens to segments i lots of sunlight. I have few TC, 3 young CC and few Spring/Easter cacti. They all seems to react same way: if thirsty, leaves get droopy and may shrivell. I try not to get them to that point... mamapollina I actually do not see wrinkled segments. Is it possible for you to take close-up, clear photo of the problem?...See Moregreenman28 NorCal 7b/8a
