New Home Makeover show...Mar Jennings

GF gave me a book, Life on Mar's by "Lifestyle Expert" Mar Jennings. She saw him speak and raved about him and his sense of humor. Well, apparently on April 19 at 1pm on ABC they will be broadcasting his new show "Life on Mar's". Not sure if it will be the usual or something different, but I thought I might share a heads up in case anyone is interested.

I see ego is no problem!!! Thanks for the heads up, Annie - I'll watch. Who knows - could be interesting or entertaining. At the very least I want to see what the formula will be for his show - what's the crisis, how crazy are the clients, what's the catch phrase. We could have a contest pre-show and see who guesses!

In his book, he refers to 6 design principles:
- represent Mother Nature
- embrace light and reflection
- natural materials and colors
- repurpose
- repeat shapes and patterns
- consider size and scale
Nothing especially surprising there...

I have not even started my kitchen remodel to date, and yet I can see, from my kitchen wish file, that there will always be the concept of a today's kitchen, no matter who designs it, looking "dated" 10 yrs from now whatever you do, but that even so, that same kitchen might be "updated" fairly easily with different appliances, or new paint, or a change of accessories. So certainly style is not about white, or wood, or whatever else, per se. And how would it help us to have a crystal ball to know what might be "out" 5 years from now, if we don't love it now? So we could say, I don't really like this pistachio wall color and these stained cabinets at all, but boy, in 7 years it is going to be all the rage, and YOUR kitchen will be outdated! And aside from issues of trying to get the best quality breakpoint ( that doesn't mean the most expensive ) and the best floorplan you can muster, who on earth can predict resale, in terms of who will love your kitchen or not? So to me resale is limited to being about what is kind of going on in your neighborhood and community and even THAT is a moving target. So, concentrate on general good design principles, user-friendly, good light, whatever colors and finishes make you happy (to look at and to maintain).

Do you need the all the light the glass in the door provides? When you are done with the project maybe add a red curtain covering the entire glass area. What I am referring to is a curtain with a rod on both the top and bottom completely covering the glass area and the curtain is held taut. You have a red lampshade in the foyer already. A red curtain on a brown door won't look jarring. From the outside view the red curtain showing through the glass with the red painted exterior would give the illusion that it is a solid red door from the street view (sort of). You could use a very sheer red material that would still let some filtered light in.

Sorry all. I just got around to taking more photos following some of your suggestions. Let me answer a few questions... I switched the old dining room rug with the one in my family room. The new rug is a dark brown background with ivory, gold, sage and pumpkin. The ceiling height was 9 ft. We determined the size we wanted the center rectangle to be, drew the dimensions on the ceiling and attached 2x4's along this line. He then attached 1x6's vertically to the sides of the 2x4's and then that was covered by the same crown that the dining room had previously. He then used a sheet of thin veneer and cut the pieces for the bottom of the beam which resulted in a slight reveal. Pipdog, you can come for dinner anytime. Just bring lots of photos of your beautiful family room. First I switched the plates thinking they might work better on opposites sides. Then I removed them completely, along with the hydrangea. I removed the shades from the sconces but they just aren't attractive (to me) without them so I put them back on. I didn't try it with the chandy but I will soon. I'll need to look for something new for the center of the table and the buffet. The mirror is just leaning on the buffet for now. It is meant to be hung horizontally so will need new hangers on the back before I can raise it. with the plates reversed... But here it is now....

With Sophie/Holly playing off against each other like the Patty Lane/Cathy Lane (Patty Duke Show), only in drag. O.o Not sure how I ended up in such august company, but I'm not sure I would make a sufficient foil for Sophie. Lackey, maybe. Heh. I am so far out of HGTV's target market, I can't even see it from my backyard. In fact, we're so far out of that "mainstream" market that we can't even find what we want without REALLY hunting. HGTV shows don't really give me ideas, beyond "what not to do." Whereas I grew up watching This Old House with Dad (a frustrated fine carpenter by nature, systems analyst by trade), and then right into the New Yankee Workshop. Lots of this education has made it into our new build. The fine carpenter on the job is either going to love me or hate me. In my opinion, to answer the OP: Everything you see on HGTV is likely to be trendy and dated. Not a whiff of it respects the era of the house or attempts to convey the solidity of actual craftsmanship. Then again, few people really want that. They want the shinies. It's OK if you're really going to flip or stage a home. (I have to do some serious work on my 1940's cape to sell it once we get our house up. I'll probably actually use a few of the "trends" there to inexpensively make it attractive to Millenials - who are most of our target market for a little starter house). I wouldn't go anywhere near any of it for a house I meant to keep. Everything that looks "fresh" and new now will look old and tired in 5-10.

It seems like a welcome change to the shows that focus on if you do this to your house, you can sell it for $$$ more.

Is the extra title decoration explained somewhere? I am guessing the use of the apostrophe has to be intentional, since he uses it everywhere. Is it his version of speaking in third person, cute-speak or something?

His name is Mar. The apostrophe vs. without would appear to just be sort of a play on words.

Ick. I was afraid that was the case. I could have gone with the word play Life on Mars. But the possessive Mar's is a different animal. I don't police most grammar left turns, but to intentionally have us read Life on Mar's... what?....WHAT?!? Please finish the darn sentence! It is like so annoying like, you know, he doesn't know like how to like communicate properly, you know?

I don't think that is the reason. There was a British TV show named Life on Mars... which then got a run over here, same exact name, Life on Mars.... and it was on ABC, same network airing this decorating show

His name is Mar and he uses the play on his name a lot as in sMARt ideas...hokey, but there it is.
