First time Rose Gardener - looking for suggestions.

I have a small plot adjacent to my house foundation that is 15' x 5'. It faces south. I would like to plant some roses there. I live in Eastern Massachusetts.

I'd appreciate suggestions for plants to consider. I'm looking for low maintenance.

If you don't get suggestions here, there is a rose forum as well as one for antique roses and one for organic rose growing.

I guess the lowest maintenance roses are the Knockouts. Mine are extremely hardy and carefree. But if you're looking for a traditional rose scent and many-pedaled blossoms, Knockouts aren't for you.

A 12 foot piece of that fence fabric will give you a circle about 4 feet in diameter and that is a good size. What little bit of material that will fall out of that fence will not make any difference to what happens inside. If you have enough manure you want to plunk down 6 inches of vegetative waste and put 2 inches of manure on top of that, or a mixture of about 3 parts vegetative waste to 1 part manure. Adding "dirt", soil, is not essential. Back in Sir Albert Howards day that was thought to supply the microorganisms that would digest the material but today we know that is not needed since the vegetative waste already has those microorganisms growing on them. Some of us add material to our compost over time while others build up the compost pile all at once. It really makes little difference except that piling stuff up all at once probably gets finished compost sooner. Of course, that also means you need all of your material there when you build the pile.

What year do you plan to have your wedding? The reason I ask, peonies and roses take some time to establish to bloom--sometimes several years, and would be considered a permanent planting. I would also caution you, that what bloomed in April one year, might bloom in June the next. Hopefully, someone who has personal knowledge of the Morristown area will be able to help you. Perhaps contact your local garden nurseries, garden clubs, or local master gardeners (try your local County extension for master garderner information). Congratulations and good luck to you!

Beth, I'm sorry to say, but it sounds like they are dead. The thorniness of the canes means nothing, but the darkness does. If you cut into them, you will see brown instead of a green rim with a white center. But check the bases of the plants, you may have some good growth there. If you do, cut away all the dead stuff. I wish I could tell you why the one Zephirine is doing well and the others didn't. Was the ground different there? Was it moister or drier in that spot during the winter? Did it have more protection from extra mulch or a building? You'll have to figure it out. When the forsythias bloom is when it is time to trim roses and they really start to grow at the point so you know for next year. I do hope you don't give up on roses. Shanna, If you are ever in Knoxville, I would highly recommend a trip to the UT Gardens (admission FREE). It highlights many of the perennials well suited for our area. I cannot recommend roses (one of the few flowers that just doesn't do well for me), but here's a listing of just a few of the perennials found in my garden that really do well and are easy to grow: Daylilies - - don't settle for just Stella D'Oros, there are many lovely ones to chose from and many are re-bloomers Coneflowers Shasta Daisies Perennial salvias Coreopsis Liatris Joe Pye Weed Sedums - - many great fall bloomers Dahlias A mixture of different perennials will give you a long bloom season as well as different textures and colors. One thing that I didn't think of earlier: do you have Japanese beetles? If you do, they will IME eat roses to the point that most aren't worth growing. I only have ones that bloom once, early, and then fade into the background for the rest of the season with other plants taking over the interest in those beds.

Rugosas are low maintenance and have lovely scent - think beach roses. There are some with double flowers and many have beautiful hips.

Hi Kurchian - I've been on a quest for low maintenance roses for about 5 years at least. I also grow organically and do not spray at all. So far, my best recommendation would be for 'Julia Child', a yellow rose. In my experience it is a trooper. It has been very disease resistant and vigorous.

I've also had many good recommendations from the Rose forum and the Antiques Roses forum. Very knowledgeable roses growers there who are always very helpful.
