Should I be confident in a SW color match of BM paints?

I am getting ready to paint a complete remodel so the paint would not have to be matched up to an existing color.

SW here is easier to buy from and with pricing deals looks to be much cheaper (cashmere vs regal select)

Only problem is I am basing my color choices strictly off of pictures on Houzz. My guess is it would be close enough I would never know.

I just want to make sure I am not going to end up with an end product that is noticeably different than the color I was trying to copy. Colors will be choosen from Reverse petwer/stingray/edgecomb/owl gray and white dove/simply white/ cloud white.

I have read many times people say it matters who is behind the counter doing the job for you, which confuses me because I thought the machine had a laser or something to do the matching automatically and take the human out of the equation.

Should significantly more money be spent for peace of mind or is this one of the no brainers to save a bunch of money to put towards other aspects of the remodel?

SW knows how to color match competitor colors. The counter person only needs to follow the directions regarding the base color and the machine does the rest of the calculating.

It depends. It can be hit or miss. For some colors, it worked really well, for others, not so great.
However, if you can't compare to the actual BM color strip, you may never notice the difference.

SW has all the Ben Moore color formulas in their computer. If you want a match, just go to their store and ask them for it. It's easy. :)

Thanks, I will either give BM a call about colormatching or if they have an equivalent shade. I used BM Regal in pearl finish for the kitchen paneling and then Satin Impervo waterborne for the cabinets. I am very happy with how they both turned out. Or else I may just go with the SW since they have a sale coming up starting Sunday, but I really want an eggshell which they do not seem to offer, just flat and satin. I generally do not like the look of flat paint, looks too chalky to me.

I’ve found that it’s always best to talk to the painter who is doing your quality work. What brand do they like to work with and can you get that manufacturers paint deck to select the best color from that line that works with your design. Otherwise you are strong arming a painter to use a brand they aren’t used to using. Paint is paint - right? Well ask 3 different pro painters and each will tell you who ‘the best’ is. Really just boils down to letting them use the line they have had success with and can guarantee the pro paint job you are paying for. Or, if you are personally set on a paint manufacturer for whatever reason best to work with a painter that agrees with your selection. Last resort is what Lori suggested which is getting a strike off sample for approval of the color match. Lastly, make sure you are specifying the sheen you want for each area. That can effect the color you see.

How well can BM match SW paints?

Hi - I would get a paint chip or sample from SW rather than rely on Samplize solely, as a source colour reference. I would ask how well they feel able to match SW Fleeting Green at BM also. Sometimes they will know which of their matches are most accurate. Then get a quart in the grade & sheen you are after. You can even paint a swatch in store, let it dry and ask them to compare the results. They have handouts with samples of sheen finish in store. There aren’t always direct sheen matches between companies as there isn’t a national standard as such - but a range for each sheen/gloss. But before all that just check Fleeting Green against Swept Away, to see if you could live with the differences. It may save the cost of a custom mix. Whichever you choose to sample, paint on either Swatchright paint/peel/stick decals or board (2 coats) to test in your room. That way you have the flexibility to move them into both light and shadow. Both colours have the potential to shift blue in certain imbalanced lighting. So you want to know how they will behave in your space.

I agree with nosoccermom, it really does depend. I had SW color match both Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray using the computer. Revere Pewter match was right on, but Edgecomb Gray was way off. This is where the person behind the counter comes in. The manager at the SW I went to took my BM Edgecomb Gray color chip and color-matched it by hand. She went through several different iterations of it and it came out an almost perfect match. I used it in all of the main living areas of my home. I would also recommend purchasing SW fan decks, they're inexpensive and you may find colors there that you like just as much and then you won't need to worry about matching. But I've used SW throughout my home, their paint is an amazing value (I used Harmony), watch for their sales and use coupons and you will be happy with the results, I'm sure!
