Speaking of Coffee

I was watching an episode of Gardening Australia the other day and one of the presenters talked about using caffeinated coffee as a slug and snail killer. It is the caffeine that kills the slugs and snails. I have for the most part been letting nature take care of the slugs and snails, but I can't help but notice that this year the slugs and snails are very numerous and I haven't seen on toad yet. I don't want to spray with an insecticide and thought maybe using the coffee method would work as it would also slightly acidify the soil. Has anyone tried this with coffee and seen good results? And would a cheap coffee work well enough so long as it has caffeine?
