I don't think it was an accident because you have to put the car in "pairing" mode, then turn the Bluetooth on the phone then sync with a code (usually 1234) then accept the pairing.

It was probably the tech working on the car and wanted his playlist to play from the car speakers while he worked. He probably forgot to clear it from the Bluetooth list. I don't imagine he would want anyone having his contact lists either. I don't think they should do that. But it does happen. Reporting it is about all you can do, and of course delete it. You could also call Scott since you have all his information and ask why it is all now linked into your system. I bet that will scare the heck out of him knowing he can get in trouble for doing it.

How can progressive keep the name of whoever did the repairs from you?

Actually I am Scott. It's the other person I don't know. Progressive says it's one of their "qualified service centers" that did the repairs and they are not even supposed to listen to the radio. I guess I am over reacting. It just feels like someone used it while it was supposed to be in the shop getting fixed.

Nope you are not over reacting, its just totally unacceptable - and a wee bit creepy. I would make sure Progressive knew this was a serious breech of privacy

It's not a big deal. Easy to delete it. My phone has paired with systems in cars where I am the passenger if my Bluetooth is on and the driver clicks the wrong thing.

Just delete it. It's really no big deal except that you now have their contacts and that's not great for them security wise if you were a dishonest type. It goes both ways. For that reason I always remove my device (phone) from my bluetooth system when leaving my car for repairs. Don't want anyone having access to my contacts. Also remove my house and any other other keys for the key fob. Basic security measures.

I would let the shop manager know simply because an employee shouldn't feel so "at home" with customer's cars that they use their systems as though the car was their own.

It wouldn't bother me. I try hard not to sweat the small stuff. It doesn't always work but I try. :)

I don't think you are overreacting. I'm sure you probably don't enjoy getting someone called on the carpet for listening to music while they worked, but whichever service person did that was out of line.

I don't know how you reach the shop though if you don't know who had your car. I don't understand how you came to not know who had the car for repairs. I would want a detailed dated invoice of what had been done, itemized list of charges for my files. No one but me decides who works on my car, I choose the shop and approve the work, not someone else's insurance company. They can suggest a shop to you, but they can't insist you use it. At least in this state, I don't know if other states could be different. (Washington)

That would make me unhappy, to say the least. How do I know that's all they did? Maybe they wanted to comply with the law and be "hands off" while they took my car for a joyride. I also don't see how the repair shop's information can be kept from you. I believe you have a right to know.

I'd go thru the contact list and find Shayan's home number or whatever (ICE) and give him/her a call. LOL Maybe there's a work number, too, then you'll know which shop fixed your car.

OK now that doesn't make sense to me. I agree, no one does work on my vehicle without me knowing who, where and what. I would get a full itemized list and know how to contact them should something fail in the future.
It's always your decision to pick the place that does the repairs.
There's a very good chance that someone did drive the car they have to to check out the work done, doesn't mean it was a joy ride. It's standard practice to drive it after repairs are done.
I would not be happy about the bluetooth stuff, but the most I would do is let the shop management know.

And what you can do is put a lock code on your car! It's always something that can protect your privacy and stop others from doing what happened. Change it from 1234 to your code!

@ravencajun, I never thought to change my code but that is a good idea! Also, Progressive said they handle everything and for me to go through them. They said someone drives the car to the repair shop and drives it back. There is an extra 75 miles on the car so I know they drove it somewhere. I did get an itemized list, but its all on Progressive letterhead. Maybe they co-own the shop? I'm not sure how Progressive finds the repair shops actually.

It all happened so fast. I was rear ended and the next day my car was in the shop. I didn't delete my phone information either. I honestly didn't even think about it. I haven't been in a car accident since 1986. So I was just wanting it fixed. Especially since the car is only 4 months old with 2,400 miles. Sad, wrecked already. Oh well.

They messed it - they fix it!

@morz8: I had 3 options. 1. Let Progressive do it all. 2. Find my own shop and coordinate with Progressive 3. Go through my own insurance company and let them subrogate. Honestly, option 1 was the quickest and easiest. I fully trusted them. Progressive has a huge reputation with Flo. I figured it would be done properly. And the work was done properly. I just worry someone was taking my car home at night and think it was their own for 2 weeks.

I suspect it was the driver who transported your vehicle who connected to your bluetooth. That puts a whole new slant on it. He/she had to have communication with the business and it was a safety measure for them to use your bluetooth system rather than try to use their cell phone while driving. That is being careful and a good thing. They simply forgot to disconnect their phone when they brought it back. I see no problem at all here now that I learn they had to drive your vehicle for 150 miles.

If I'm not paying I let the insurance company handle which shop etc. When you choose your own you may end up with aftermarket parts and any shoddy work that is done that shows up later is on your dime. The insurance company shops generally are contracted to use factory parts and to restore your vehicle to it's original condition. Plus they have have outstanding warranties on their work. Taking the check and pocketing the extra cash is OK for older vehicles that already have a lower bluebook value but for a newer car in good condition that extra money in pocket isn't worth it due to potential problems down the road.

When I was hit and my car damaged, Allstate suggested three different shops to me which I rejected. My car went to the dealership where it was purchased at my insistence and their trained mechanics and body people did all the work with authentic parts. I knew where it was. I saw the estimate and actually saw work in progress when I stopped in to see how the repairs were coming along, if it was on schedule to be returned to me.

Taking the check and pocketing anything didn't enter in to it. The dealership was paid directly, and not by me. I chose where the work was to be done - they (meaning the other drivers insurance which happened to be Allstate) paid the bill.

What does your agent say? When I got hit, I contacted MY agent first they contacted the person who hit me ( I too was stopped), I did nothing with their agent, MY agent handled everything and I received a complete list of what was done and how much etc.

When my cars go in for service I specify
Do not wash my car!
Do not change the radio stations!
Do not smoke in it!

The Sync doesn't download the phone book unless you select it from the menu.
You can listen to music from the playlist without downloading the phone book.

Check service order for mileage in and mileage out. It should be less than 2 miles.

This reminds me a bit of an incident that happened after I had my car worked on in the 80's. The mechanic did the repairs then took it on a test drive to make sure the engine was operating correctly. 15, 20, 30 minutes passed and he still wasn't back. Finally, about an hour after he left, he came back. I said something like, "That was some "test" drive!" He just nodded, handed me the keys, and said I was good to go.

Several months later, I was pulled over by a city cop. After checking my I.D., registration, and proof of insurance, he asked if I knew there was an unpaid speeding ticket associated with my car? Of course, I had no idea what he was talking about. As it turns out, the reason the mechanic was gone so long on that test drive was that he had been pulled over and given a ticket while driving my car! The real jerk move on his part was that he didn't tell me AND he NEVER PAID IT.

You can bet I had several choice words for him when I called him the moment I got home.

So, because of that experience (and others along the way), I don't take kindly to people treating my things like they are their own. They need to ask permission and they need to return my things in the same condition as they received the item. It's just simple consideration and respect.

I test drove a new car about a month ago - the salesman was showing me how the phone integration worked, and once the bluetooth link was done, my phone book got transferred to the car automatically. Two other cars I have now work exactly the same way.

pawprint, I can't believe you're suggesting that you judge the reputation of a company from its commercials. I hope you have a bit more sense than that. Next time you have an accident, you choose the body shop and you take you car to it (or have it towed there). That way, you won't have a recurrence of this problem. When you submit it to your own company to handle the claim and the subsequent subrogation, you typically have to pay the deductible on your own policy, if any, but you can hold your own agent accountable for what happens.

When I have been hit I have called my insurance company immediately. The only contact I have with the other driver's insurance is if they ask me to give a statement regarding how the accident occurred. My insurance company handles everything else. I can have a check written to me or I can have it assigned to the repair facility of their or my choosing. Actually they don't choose but they recommend. My insurance company collects from the other company if their driver is at fault. That includes the deductible.

Last time there was a dispute. The other driver tried to claim I backed into her My insurance covered my damage less my deductible. They investigated further and found out the other party lied (the damage proved without a doubt I was telling the truth) and I did not contribute to the accident in any way. They sent me a check refunding my deductible and a letter for my files of their finding.

Now that it has been reported..LET IT GO. It would rattle me also but now that you have done ALL you can do..it is OVER. What do you want proof of torture in retribution? I have never heard of a company that would not give you the name of where work was done. Now THAT would have me at the legislature trying to get a law set!! In my opinion this is a HUGE red flag on Progressives part. Never would I do business with them. It is shady, plain and simple shady business practice.

Yes, it's annoying, but delete and move on. I have a bigger concern with Progressive refusing to tell you who, where, and what were used for the repairs on your car. What on earth is so secretive about a repair shop?

I take my car to the repair shop of my choice for collision repairs and getting a loaner. That way I can go back if I have a problem. Never heard of such secrecy.

I've been insured with Progressive for years and when I sustained hail damage during a tornado was provided the choice between having repairs done at their large repair facility, taking my car to the shop of my choice or simply getting a check for the value of the repairs. They do offer a list of repair shops that will restore the car within the price limitation for the damage and advised that if I chose another shop that was more expensive, I would have to cover the difference. That seemed fair to me.

I was rear-ended by another driver and they went to bat for me (although it was not their responsibility to do so) to get the truck fixed. The other driver provided fictitious insurance documents and then tried to claim that it never happened. He left the scene before the police got there.

I was dropped by Allstate after being in an accident, changed to Progressive and have never regretted that decision.

If someone leaves the scene of an accident in our jurisdiction, and can be traced, s/he'll get a large enough fine that it's almost for certain that s/he won't try that again.

Hi OJ, yes, I had pictures of him with his wrecked car including his license plate. He was wearing one of those ankle bracelet things and said that he was only allowed out of his home to go to work and back home and if he didn't arrive by a certain time that he would have to go back to jail. Of course after he'd left, he tried to say that it wasn't him and the accident didn't happen. Luckily I did take the pictures!

We found out that it was his cousin's car and when she said that he was not supposed to be driving her car and that he wasn't covered under her insurance, my insurance rep cornered her about reporting the car stolen. Her insurance finally paid, but if my Progressive rep had not been involved, I don't think they would have. He got the Texas State Highway Patrol involved to get the correct insurance information.

I was stopped on a state highway because of an accident up ahead of me and he hit me so hard that my truck was propelled across the highway and into a deep ditch, narrowly missing a huge concrete abutment. I was really shaken up but not injured.

I am still trying to figure out why Pawprint's insurance company did not handle the matter (estimate of damage, repairs etc.). How does that work? In California your insurance company is your advocate.

I use Esurance. In every instance, however minor, we have been assigned a representative who stays with us from being to end. Excellent online communication and excellent updates. The last time I had to use them was in the middle of the night. By that morning I had an appointment to take my car in for an estimate. Their local recommended repair service was top notch about communication. Not only with daily updates and info on anything new they found but also pictures of the work in progress. I was given a detailed list of all parts (including part numbers) used, their cost and a written warranty on the work. My online "agent" was in constant communication also wanting to know if I encountered any problems, had any further questions etc. I did have one problem with a rep who wasn't good at "vehicle speak". That was when she was being lied to by the other driver's insurance. But she handed me up the ladder so it was finally resolved. (see earlier post)
