Which roses that are new to you this year are you most excited about? A few that I am looking forward to the most are -

Poseidon

White Licorice

Memorial Day

Grande Dame

Melodee Parfumme

Earth Song

Mostly because I've read such good things about them and I think they are all lovely too. Melodee Parfumme, because I love the pictures I've seen.

Funny you should say that you expect most people to say, "all of them"; that's exactly what I was thinking. Ok. If I have to narrow it down a bit, I think the roses I'm most excited about getting are Eugenie Guinoisseau (I've been wanting a moss and this is the one I'm trying), Lullaby (sounds beautiful), Madame Cornelissen (been looking forward to this one for a while), and Duchesse de Grammont(been wanting this one for who knows how long). How's that for a narrowed list? I didn't even include Adam, Madame Wagram or Anne Marie de Montravel all of which I'm very excited about. There are more but I'm really trying to keep with the spirit of the original post.

I have avoided this post because this is SO HARD to answer. I feel like if I mention one, the others seeds will say, "Well, fine! We won't germinate for you!" So my lips are sealed. Truly, it's after they really grown in the yard (and second or third year on perennials) that I get an idea of whether i truly look forward to them or not. I've noticed that when I rely and wait eagerly on one plant, it always seems to be another plant that I sorely underrated that performs (and dresses up the garden) beyond my wildest dreams (and beyond the one I was waiting so eagerly for). What Tomatos Are You Most Looking Forward To Tasting?

I'm with Robert and Suzie on this one. The first tomato is the one we look forward to the most. Technically, we've already had our first three tomatoes from our plants in pots, so for us the first tomato thing already is over. Like all tomatoes that have set and ripened in cooler temperatures, their flavor, while still good and certainly superior to grocery store tomatoes, is not the same as a tomato that will ripen in hotter temperatures in May or June. The first tomato from an in-ground plant likely will be from Better Boy, which bloomed insanely early, but the ones I'm looking forward to the most are those from the black, purple or pink varieties like J D's Special C-Tex, Spudakee Purple, Spudatula, Greek Rose, Cherokee Purple, etc. It is likely our first fruit from in-ground plants, if not Better Boy, will be from Terenzo or LIzzano, but I don't particularly crave the flavor of a typical red hybrid cherry. I crave the OPs that are impossible to come by in stores....and when I have bought the commercially grown OPs from places like Central Market, they did not taste nearly as good as OPs grown here in our garden. Fresh and locally grown still is best, regardless of the name of the variety. Suzie, Say it isn't so! I have steadfastly refused to look further out at the forecast for next week because I didn't want to see another potential cold front. I told Tim this morning that it wouldn't surprise me to have one next week, since that has been a very consistent pattern for the last few weeks ....but I sure was hoping for a pattern change. Some of my plants soon will be too tall to cover. At about 2.5-3' tall now, some of the potatoes already are getting hard to cover, and this heat is making them grow by leaps and bounds. Even with floating row cover, there's a limit to how much you can cover, and the taller the plants get, the harder it is. For us, the rain has tapered off a lot down here the last two weeks....and my ground is cracking. Crazy, isn't it? Usually the ground doesn't crack until June. All winter I looked forward to spring so much. Now,I look at all the crazy roller coaster weather and say to myself "This? This is what you were waiting for?" It was 91 degrees at our house yesterday and yet our forecast for later in the week shows 34 degrees. It seems ridiculous to have both of those temperature readings in the same week. I'll be happy with whatever tomatoes we get this year because something tells me we aren't going to have the huge harvests we were blessed with last year. I am so happy we canned, froze and dehydrated a 2-3 year supply in 2012 because it may be that we don't get enough fruit this year to make/can salsa and all that other stuff. Dawn

ha ha ha ! Cindy .. mulch? did you say mulch ? what is that ? I wish I had mulch . I don't have any mulch other than some leaves we rake up in the fall, which with all the trees dying ,is getting less and less available to us. I may have to resort to a leaf round up from neighbors bags heading to the dump .....the leaves do help to keep the weeds down and I use them cuz I cant afford mulch for all the gardens......so I spend my whole season WEEDING ! Good thing I like to weed cuz otherwise Ack! As for edging LOL when I am not weeding I am edging the gardens with a shovel. One year we did round up a bunch of sawdust from where my husband works and put it all along the edges and it looks nice and neat for a while but then the weeds grow up through it and I have to resort to the shovel anyway. I will have my work cut out for me this season as last year I spent all my time cleaning up all the branches and bark etc that was left behind when the trees came down ( clean up from about 40 odd trees that are 80 to 90 feet tall is no small job let me tell you ). It meant that there wasn't much time left to weed .....so I will be playing catch up this year. Signet

The two new Austins I ordered, Jubilee Celebration and Queen of Sweden I think. I've been wanting to get some pink Austins for a long time now and finally just did it. I hope I chose well.

I've already received and planted some: Munstead Wood, Dark Desire, Philatele, DeeLish, Pretty in Pink Eden, Orchid Romance and Brilliant Corsair. The rest should arrive any time: Miss Congeniality, Pretty Lady Rose, Watercolors Home Run and Smokin' Hot. I love to see the new ones bloom, but even better will be seeing the ones I planted last year and the year or so before. That is usually when they begin to show their best blooms.

..there are so many, as 2/3rd's of my garden has been re-landscaped and re-planted this winter....and I've taken a chance with quite a few....

to pick 5..

'Triomph des Noisettes'... I just hope and pray this doesn't blackspot too much...the early foliage is a gorgeous mix of red/yellow/gold/orange and green...

'Belle Lyonnaise'... a climbing Tea that's looking really good right now..

'L19 Laos'... a found rose in...Laos... that's fairly new in Europe... looking good so far...

'Magenta'...[Kordes].... I first saw this at Sissinghurst in 1987 and been meaning to grow it ever since...why so long I don't know...

'The Poet's Wife' ...a newish Austin...I've been wanting an unfading yellow with a lemony scent, so I hope I'm not disappointed...

Munstead Wood, Evelyn, America, Laguna, Comte de Chambord, Heirloom (I bought this last year and it was some other rose), Firefighter. I wasn't suppose to get any new roses this year because I was a bad girl and went to Heirloom's Rose Sale last August and got 9. How could I help it? They had old Eurodesert stock for $5 each??? What would you do?

I have only had one red and that is Oklahoma which I adore but I decided this year to expand my red and got Chrysler Imperial and Mr. Lincoln...think I will have a little battle in my garden between those three and will take some votes from my family on friends to see which of the three are their favorites.

Jasmina, Reve D'Or,Belinda's Dream,The Wife of Bath & an additional Cl. Pinkie(love that rose). I love pink roses the best but I've heard such good things about Reve D'Or on the ARF I couldn't resist.

Madame Edouard Herriot climbing. She was really hard to find (climbing form). Finally I found in UK from Trevor White. Today I observed two rosebuds! I only hope that she is the right one.

I have three orders coming...I am excited for Neil Diamond, Crescendo,Earth Song, Plum Perfect,and Compassion. My others are roses I already have and love..Love Song,Munstead Wood and Darcy. Yip-eeee! Lesley

Getting new spring roses and seeing the first blooms is one of the best times of the year! I am excited about Impulse, Zach Noble, Poseidon, and Pretty Lady.

Torture of tortures -- I was driving down I5 to Portland and saw a garden center. I really tried to fight the temptation, but alas, I now have a couple of new Sunblazes and Boscobel. . .I just can't stop myself.

I have quite a few roses that are young either from this year or last year, and I'm anxious to see all of them bloom, should I be so fortunate.

Grand Dame, Souvenir de St. Anne's, Rina Hugo, Snowbird, The Faun, Duchesse de Brabant, La France, Heirloom, Baronne Henriette de Snoy, Madame Lambard, Carefree Beauty, Charles Rennie McIntosh, No 92 Nanjing, finally taking off in its third year), two Souvinir de Malmaison, Emily, Hoag House Cream, Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux, Mme. Antoine Mari, Pink Rosette, Pink Gruss an Aachen, Annie Laurie McDowell (a very slow grower for me), Hoag House Cream and Fragrant Plum.

Iris, My two favorite roses that I own, are Sharifa Asma and Jude the Obscure. Both healthy blooming machines that smell wonderful.

Yipee Beaverfoot. I had heard 'Jude' wasn't a particularly good bloomer. But after years of drooling over others' pics decided the time had come. You are the first one who has said it's a bloom machine.

Can't wait to see everyone's photos and input on their purchases. Camera batteries charged!

Looks like everyone is going to have some beautiful roses this year. I am looking forward to seeing lots of beautiful pictures too. I am also looking forward to seeing all my roses in bloom, not just the new ones.

My new roses are going in the ground Saturday! Today is the ripping out of the roses that have gone to rootstock or the roses where the scrub jays have planted trees. I need to get some before pictures. One of the trees is about 4 feet tall!

My Vick's Caprice is getting its first bloom while still in the pot waiting to be planted. Can't wait to see it. I am so excited about this rose!

Also can't wait to see my Flamingo Dancer, Maroon Eight, Lady of Shalott, Sister Elizabeth (who is looking upset that she has not been planted long ago).

I am still waiting for my order from Roses Unlimited. Not sure when they will be sent. Unfortunately not in time to go into the ground tomorrow with the rest of the plants. So my Lady Emma Hamilton and my Occhi di Fata will have to wait. Sigh!

And probably more as I see them and just have to bring them home... plus looking forward to seeing the new roses from last year grow up and have (hopefully) lots of beautiful blooms:

Don Juan, Warm Welcome, Laura Ford, Westerland, Bull's Eye, Blaze, Sally Holmes and Casablanca.

Good thing I'm really bad at math, i would hate to add up how much all the new roses have cost over the last couple of years! Gotta feed the addiction though and when they are blooming their heads off in the summer it's more than worth every cent!

However that did not stop me from purchasing more roses this year, because I just couldn't help myself.

Holy cow, when I write them all out like that it looks like SO many!!! They are coming from several different nurseries, so this is my first time seeing them written all together.....That's kinda scary, but still mostly EXCITING!

I'm with you, Blueisland, I'm glad I'm not especially talented at math, because I never hope to know how much money I have spent in the last 2-3 years on roses.... I could have probably bought a cheap car with the total, especially if you include shipping on all these! Oh well, you can't take it with you! Let's just enjoy nature's beauty while we can!

mustbnuts, I hope you are able to take a picture of the bloom of Vick's Caprice. I've always thought that is such a beautiful rose.

If I knew how much money I spent over the last nine years on roses, including the many dozens I've discarded, I'd probably go into shock. But, really, I can't think of anything else that has given me such a sense of anticipation, excitement and satisfaction so many times during those years. A large part of life should be enjoyment, in whatever form that may take, so let's not feel guilty (unless of course you've sold your firstborn in order to finance your hobby!).
