How would you solve this problem ?

Installed new tile (yeah!) but now the floor is a bit higher so my runner rug that I had by back door gets all bunched up when we enter. I have to have something to protect new tile but can't find something that is thin enough not to get jammed in the door . Suggestions ?

Reverse the door so that it opens outward.

I have this same problem with my bathroom door. I think the only real fix in my situation is to remove the door and have the bottom planed off a bit. Which has not happened :-)

You'll have to check the door clearance and see if you can use a thinner rug, like an indoor/outdoor type.

Hollysprings: It's a beverage bar and its the one thing that DH really likes because it will also function as the bar for the LR & DR -- that's why we have the open counter there (the wall of the bar is a full wall except for the open counter on the end). I agree that the sink would be great there, but DH won't give up his bar ;) The table will either be odd or fabulous -- it is divided with the sliding glass door so when we have larger family meals, we can open the slider and have a longer table. I may have to reconsider it though. I'm still struggling to retain the architect's vision but restore functionality. I feel like I'm having far too difficult a time organizing a space that should be plenty large enough for everything. Annie -- Right now, the ovens are stacked 2 & 2 (regular oven, steam oven, microwave, warming drawer). I might be able to stack the reg oven, steam, and warming drawer and then move the micro either to the island or the pantry (we rarely use it). Assuming that you're going to be installing an exhaust liner insert, you won't need access from the front. Liner inserts are installed from below. Your cabinets need to be constructed with an opening to the exact measurements specified by the insert manufacturer's specification. The liner insert is then lifted into place and attached to the cabinets with screws or bolts inserted from below. Having operable cabinet doors will facilitate connecting ducting and electrical, but isn't required, if all the pieces align properly. As to why your cabinet maker constructed your cabinetry the way he did, it may have something to do with your ceiling height. The example shown in your first photo is obviously from a kitchen with a higher ceiling than you have. The higher ceiling allowed more room for usable cabinets along the top and for the mantle below. It looks to me like your cabinet maker was trying to keep doors in alignment with the adjoining cabinetry, which makes sense from an esthetic point of view. I suppose you could ask him to replace the two cabinet doors on the second row from the top with a solid panel, then a mantle with corbels could be attached above the arch, but it does look as though the mantle would end up peculiarly close to the ceiling. In any event, the mantle wouldn't cause any problem with the exhaust liner insert, since the insert would go in from below, behind the arch. BTW, where is your exhaust ducting? I can's see any evidence of it in your photo. Oh, and just in case your cabinetry was made to enclose an ordinary range hood (which is certainly possible), the link below will take you to the Vent-A-Hood liner insert product pages. Liner inserts are available from a number of manufacturers. They're made expressly for installations like yours. The installation documentation on the Vent-A-Hood website is quite detailed as to how they're meant to be installed, so you may find it of interest. regarding the frameless/inset question: Our cabinets are frameless. We used the Lee Valley drawer insert makers to make a custom flatware holder. These are much taller (3.5 inches) than a typical flatware organizer, so we have just filled it up with lots of flatware. We have service for 32 in ours, which we love. We never run out of flatware, even with a large group. We moved our flatware drawer from the end of the peninsula close to the eating area to a drawer next to the DW when we remodelled. We much prefer the new location, but it all depends on your kitchen layout and how you and your family operate in the kitchen. My kitchen is small (hence, the frameless cabinets) and my cleaning and prep zones overlap (sink, DW, drawers with flatware and utensils, corner cab, range - we prep between the range and sink). Both our old and new DWs had easy to grab silverware baskets. My teenage DS empties the DW, and moving the flatware drawer was one of his few requests with the remodel (surprisingly, he actually had good input!). It is much easier to put the flatware away in the new location. When I empty it (he has a tricky way of being busy/unavailable when the DW needs unloading...) I still pull out the basket and set it on the counter so I don't have to bend over. There are usually some non-flatware pieces in the basket (measuring spoons, small spatulas, small whisks, etc), and it is really nice to have the cooking utensils co-located with the flatware. I also find that I use quite a bit of flatware while prepping and cooking, so it's nice to have it nearby. The table setting thing that others are talking about got me thinking. I always set the table myself while I have some down-time during cooking. I think I do it that way because my dish storage is above where I prep and in the way of cooking, so I don't want to invite anyone into the kitchen when I'm cooking. That's gorgeous! LOVE all the stained wood and the incredible ceiling. If the trim in our house was ever stained, it was painted long ago. I know people in the neighborhood who stripped all of their trim, but it's a huge job, and heaven knows how much of that paint is lead-based. I'm just going to live with my painted trim! I particularly envy that ceiling. I don't think we ever had beams and coffering, and some fool put popcorn on Every. Ceiling. In. The. House. The remodel got rid of it in the kitchen, dining room, and bath; I personally scrapped every inch of our bedroom. The living room and my son's room have got to be done, but I'll hire someone to do it in a few years. It's an awful, awful job.

I don't think you want to plane an exterior door, though. Of course, a door can only be changed to open outward in certain conditions.

Is the weather stripping on the bottom of the door or on the threshold? If it's on the bottom of the door you could get a threshold plate with the weather stripping on it, and take the weather stripping off the door, maybe.

Exactly this problem left for us by our PO. I found a very low profile mat at Target. I also put down the "runner by the foot" from the hardware store in winter. Not pretty, but it does the job. One winter it got bunched somehow, and once bunched it got caught all the time. Shh, but I duct taped it at the door sill.

So, look for "low profile" and rubber backing to hold it in place.

Thanks all. The weather stripping is at the Bottom and DH says I'm ruining it by yanking door due to rug problem. I'll ck out the indoor outdoor runners at hardware store but today I bought about 10 flat/skinny rugs and NONE worked. I've always had and needed a rug by this entrance b/c it is the dirtiest spot in the house. Can't imagine what kinda cr@p we'd be tracking w/o a rug.

I had the same problem and bought a thin rug from Home Depot or somewhere similar that had the thin rubber bevelled edge all the way around it. These aren't beautiful (I've only seen them in brown, grey, or black), but I don't mind the look of them either. The bevelled rubber edge sort of guides the door up and over the rug, keeping it from bunching up or moving.

I do agree that planing the bottom of the door is probably the best long term idea, but I still haven't done mine and it probably won't get done.

Have you looked at Chilewich floor coverings? They are super thin.

The other option, if you're going to have a rug there anyway, is to take up the tile in the area where the rug would be and sink the rug.

Needs to be thin like chilewhich but don't want to put adhesive on my new tile .

I've about decided to move present runner away from door radius and just take longer step when entering/exiting. Door is steel so there's no shaving that can be done. Weather stripping is a must to prevent air gaps and keep small critters at bay.

Try FLOR tiles. I've used them in a similar situation. Also, LL Bean waterhog mats, maybe. Not as attractive as some of the FLOR options, though!

I have two options that may work. Since the door is steel, it probably has an adjustable sill. The adjustable sill will allow you to reduce the door bottom weatherstrip. Remove the plugs and adjust sill upward. Measure height gained and remove that much from bottom of door weatherstrip. Remove the door and lay on edge. Trim weatherstrip with scissors.

The other option may annoy you. It's possible to install a stop on the top exterior side of threshold and a bulb weatherstrip on lower edge of door which will allow you to remove the bottom weatherstrip.

Or, get something thin at WalMart. :)
