Need ideals on how to solve this cabinet problem; today please...

How do you think the exhaust fan is positioned in this cabinet? How would you get to it for repairs or replacment? It's hard to tell in this picture, but the front of the cabinet is flat from top to bottom.

That is what I asked my cabinet guy to build for me. But her forgot and gave me 4 doors instead.

Now we have to figure out how to solve the problem. To build it like the picture shows poses a problem with access to the exhaust unit. You can see the exhaust unit that my husband started installing before I told him that the cabinet was built wrong.

Now they are both telling me that we have to have the lowers set of doors or a removable panel. I'm not quite ready to give up what I want.

I am sure that some of talented and experinced kitchen guru's on this forum can help me solve this.

Please show me your hood with a concealed fan or share your thoughts on how to get the look that I have fallen in love with.

Am I reading this right, in thinking that the divider is in the way, if you need to remove the fan?

I wouldn't worry much more about it. You have what you have. It will do. There is no need to replace a kitchen exhaust fan. If worse came to worst, you would have someone cut the divider, replace it afterwards, touch up the wood and repaint.

Your inspiration picture has inset cabinet doors, and those are actually operable cabinet doors (not panels) there providing access. You could do the same, but it may be less successful if you're not using inset doors. It would be most successful with partial overlay doors vs full overlay, but that decision has already been made for the rest of the kitchen.

I know the trend is for opening everything up, but that doesn't work well here. It's not that big of a deal, and would only cost maybe a hundred dollars or so, but I'd add some studs and drywall back, and re-create some of the wall. It works much better to have two separate spaces open to each other, rather than wide open, but not integrated. Creating one space out of two here doesn't work because they haven't been unified into ONE space well, and you have to deal with the plumbing chase. And thus, you get lots of people who will think Marcolo's comment about the range being in the DR, but not actually say that to you. It feels like the kitchen is busting it's way into the DR way with no separation. The kitchen needs to be separate and feel separate from the dining area, or else you need to do a LOT more work here to make it into a real single space. Adding enough of the walls back to accomplish the separation. Still maintaining a larger opening than originally there will actually make the space more cohesive. It feels choppy and awkward with them flowing into each other with no delineation now.

regarding the frameless/inset question: Our cabinets are frameless. We used the Lee Valley drawer insert makers to make a custom flatware holder. These are much taller (3.5 inches) than a typical flatware organizer, so we have just filled it up with lots of flatware. We have service for 32 in ours, which we love. We never run out of flatware, even with a large group. We moved our flatware drawer from the end of the peninsula close to the eating area to a drawer next to the DW when we remodelled. We much prefer the new location, but it all depends on your kitchen layout and how you and your family operate in the kitchen. My kitchen is small (hence, the frameless cabinets) and my cleaning and prep zones overlap (sink, DW, drawers with flatware and utensils, corner cab, range - we prep between the range and sink). Both our old and new DWs had easy to grab silverware baskets. My teenage DS empties the DW, and moving the flatware drawer was one of his few requests with the remodel (surprisingly, he actually had good input!). It is much easier to put the flatware away in the new location. When I empty it (he has a tricky way of being busy/unavailable when the DW needs unloading...) I still pull out the basket and set it on the counter so I don't have to bend over. There are usually some non-flatware pieces in the basket (measuring spoons, small spatulas, small whisks, etc), and it is really nice to have the cooking utensils co-located with the flatware. I also find that I use quite a bit of flatware while prepping and cooking, so it's nice to have it nearby. The table setting thing that others are talking about got me thinking. I always set the table myself while I have some down-time during cooking. I think I do it that way because my dish storage is above where I prep and in the way of cooking, so I don't want to invite anyone into the kitchen when I'm cooking. That's gorgeous! LOVE all the stained wood and the incredible ceiling. If the trim in our house was ever stained, it was painted long ago. I know people in the neighborhood who stripped all of their trim, but it's a huge job, and heaven knows how much of that paint is lead-based. I'm just going to live with my painted trim! I particularly envy that ceiling. I don't think we ever had beams and coffering, and some fool put popcorn on Every. Ceiling. In. The. House. The remodel got rid of it in the kitchen, dining room, and bath; I personally scrapped every inch of our bedroom. The living room and my son's room have got to be done, but I'll hire someone to do it in a few years. It's an awful, awful job.

Hi davidro1. No the problem is the cabinet (picture #2) is built nothing like the one that i wanted (picture #1). Istead of a 2 door flat panel with area to hang a shelf, keystone and corbels, he gave me 4 doors. I have no room for the shelf at all in his layout. I think he needs to take the entire cabinet down and start over. But, even then, how do we build it like picture # 1 and still allow access to the fan if we need to repair or replace it.

Thanks for responding. I am really desperate to come up with a solution and the cabinet guy will be back tomorrow.

My Zephyr power unit drops down out of the hood enclosure from the bottom for service.

check your specs for access if it is needed...

you have him remake it with panels that open - from a push on the panel (door) or from an cut out up under the bottom of the panels.

as for the part with the arch and corbel? well he is the cabinet maker, he should have ideas on that one!

I will go find the paperwork for the exhaust unit and see what it says.

Over the wire, we will have inset doors. I said that he built for 4 doors but I meant 4 set of doors; 2 on top and two on bottom.

Assuming that you're going to be installing an exhaust liner insert, you won't need access from the front. Liner inserts are installed from below. Your cabinets need to be constructed with an opening to the exact measurements specified by the insert manufacturer's specification. The liner insert is then lifted into place and attached to the cabinets with screws or bolts inserted from below.

Having operable cabinet doors will facilitate connecting ducting and electrical, but isn't required, if all the pieces align properly.

As to why your cabinet maker constructed your cabinetry the way he did, it may have something to do with your ceiling height. The example shown in your first photo is obviously from a kitchen with a higher ceiling than you have. The higher ceiling allowed more room for usable cabinets along the top and for the mantle below. It looks to me like your cabinet maker was trying to keep doors in alignment with the adjoining cabinetry, which makes sense from an esthetic point of view. I suppose you could ask him to replace the two cabinet doors on the second row from the top with a solid panel, then a mantle with corbels could be attached above the arch, but it does look as though the mantle would end up peculiarly close to the ceiling. In any event, the mantle wouldn't cause any problem with the exhaust liner insert, since the insert would go in from below, behind the arch.

BTW, where is your exhaust ducting? I can's see any evidence of it in your photo.

Oh, and just in case your cabinetry was made to enclose an ordinary range hood (which is certainly possible), the link below will take you to the Vent-A-Hood liner insert product pages. Liner inserts are available from a number of manufacturers. They're made expressly for installations like yours. The installation documentation on the Vent-A-Hood website is quite detailed as to how they're meant to be installed, so you may find it of interest.

The duct comes out the top of the unit: you can see a small lip at the top.

The cabinet maker should be able to fabricate a mantel shelf with corbel and brackets that covers the lower two doors and attaches with some kind of cleat or heavy clip...the proportions will be different, it would be overlaying the doors and not inset, but you could probably come up with something satisfactory.

Thanks for the detailed info. wa8b. The ductwork has not been installed yet. We were waiting to see where everything aligned. We do have a hood liner insert with our unit and I think it was installed from the bottom so hopefully we will be ok.
This is our first experience with a hood unit like this. We have always had the OTR microwave with exhaust.
