Eating less red meat
Comments (16)I somewhat follow Bumble's way although we rarely eat fried foods, we don't do fast-foods and we eat less meat than we used to. We do not eat red meat very often. This past weekend, I had the first steak I have had in many months. We did grill burgers over the holiday. We've also cut down on cheese, much as I love it. When I had my last bloodwork my doctor said my good cholesterol had risen and the only thing I had done different was cutting back on the cheese. ?? There have been many studies on red meat affecting our health, and it's the cancer studies that concern me. So, we do eat it occasionally. We also limit (try) the "white stuff" and do not eat much processed food at all. Bumble, I thought you were doing Paleo or some other plan? I remember reading your post about it on the cooking forum some time ago....See MoreOff topic---Would you eat this?
Comments (46)in all probability the turkey would have been fine if it was cooked properly... if i thought any poultry was undercooked, regardless of thaw method, i would zap it a bit in the microwave before i ate it!! many, many people get sick from cross contamination... counters/plates, etc not cleaned properly from the raw food that sat on it, etc....ie: if a raw turkey that happened to be tainted with samonella sat on a plate while being stuffed, then if that plate sat out and was just rinsed hastily and used to hold the cooked turkey afterwards, or a cutting board that was used for some meat and then used for raw veggies without be cleaned properly, or serving raw veggies that might be tainted from soil and not cleaned properly, or by the cook, etc simply not washing their hands when needed!... cooked food is usually unlikely to get you sick if it is cooked properly and not cross contaminated afterwards- and, it is a good idea to reheat leftovers and not eat them 'cold' esp. if they had been sitting out for any lengthy time on the table or counter!...See MoreWould you eat this ground turkey?
Comments (30)When I was a kid, they didn't have the "Dead Stock Removal" businesses that appeared later, who, when you gave them a call, would come to your farm within a couple of days, usually, winch the dead (and without blood having been drained) animal up on to their (stinking) truck and take it to their (stinking) plant. The hide would be removed, for processing into shoes, belts, purses and the like. Some of the meat would be sent to mink ranches, fox farms, etc. Some would be sent to pet food processors, where it was cooked and had other stuff added, to be put into cans and sold to townies and other pet "owners" to feed to their pets. ole joyful...See MorePeople trying to eat less meat: Is anyone else 'into' tempeh?
Comments (14)Hi biwako - I have been a vegetarian for 16+ years. Back then it was very hard to find good veggie food. Now days the possibilities are endless. IÂm not very familiar with tempeh. I do like tofu when itÂs fried. I like standard recipes like tacos, chili, chicken dishes, meatloaf, etc. I just donÂt like the idea of eating meat. We are now able to buy soy based "chicken, steak strips, ground beef, turkey, shrimp, BBQ ribs, hot dogs, bacon, sausage" and more. Were we live in CA all of these meat substitutes are available at all regular grocery stores in the freezer section. Morning Star Farms makes most of what I mentioned. Gardenburger now makes more than just patties. I donÂt want to sound like a walking billboard, but if anyone is trying to eat less meat, but still wants to eat their favorite recipes, I suggest giving these substitutes a try. The taste and texture is practically identical to the real thing. DH is not a vegetarian, and likes them all. Will you please send me the tempeh directions? IÂd like to try it. Thanks. Nina...See Moreagmss15
