I don't think 90 minutes would make a difference. It was probably chilled at the store, and it was wrapped. I'd use it. But cook thoroughly.

No way. Ground meat is one of the most dangerous meats when it comes to contamination at the store. Leaving food at room temperature is the optimum temperature for bacterial growth. Cooking ONLY kills live bacteria--it does nothing to eliminate the chemical toxins they may leave behind.

There's no way I'd feed my family any ground meat that had sat out that long, not even with extreme cooking. Always better to be safe rather than sorry, IMO

I would eat it, but would probably cook it thoroughly today/now and not let it sit refrigerated overnight. If you hadn't planned the tacos for this evening, could you cook it anyway, reheat tomorrow for your meal?

i'm sure your'e eating dinner as we speak, but my first question would have been how warm was your house...if it's anything like mine it was cool enough, not to have to worry...

I would have cooked it and fed it to my dog. You say 1 1/2 hours but how long was it unrefrigerated while you were walking in the store, in line, etc.? It may have been ok but just not worth the risk for me.

Yep. I'd have eaten it for sure. I also would not have cooked it longer than normal but I cook most of my meat to be well done. It's the way I like it especially any ground meat.

If it's not worth the risk to me, it's not worth the risk to my dog.

In this case, I would have cooked and eaten it without reservation.

Not me, I opened a package straight from the store last night. The paper in the package underneath the turkey had black mold all over it. We had meatless spaghetti sauce.

suzieque, don't think I don't like my dog. I just believe that dogs stomachs are way stronger than humans. Way stronger. Many can handle eating trash, etc... Unlike with humans, I don't think there would have been any chance he'd get sick over eating it.

My dog is so smart. She won't eat any raw meat. She ignores bones I give her. But she does eat canned dog food, that stuff smells pretty bad. But it's definitely "cooked". She also adores people food. anything I put in my mouth, she'll eat. Even peanut butter.

I agree with Suzique, if I thought a food item was going bad and would not eat it myself, there is no way I would give it to my dog. I've seen way too many sick dogs come in to the vet clinic where I volunteer because their humans gave them spoiled food or they got into a garbage can and ate rotting food. We've had some very serious cases that involved E-coli and salmonella. Sadly, some of those dogs were so sick they had to be euthanized.

My dog eats cat snickers out of the cat box. He is clearly superior. I would feed him the leftovers of my ground whatever meal and the next day we would go for a jog. You know sometime message boards can be so passive aggressive lol. Get it out....get it alllll out.

I have probably left hamburger out that long to thaw for a hamburger, or meatloaf.

... when I was a kid, one of our half-grown young cattle died in the barn, Dad pulled it out with the tractor on a chain and it lay there on the side of the hill for months.

Our dog would come for a snack whenever he got hungry, though we didn't want to walk within 50 feet of it ...

... and several of the neighbours' dogs did, as well.

Didn't hear of any of them dying ... or even getting sick - and the messaging system in a rural community is quite well developed.

There's a lot that you folks who pamper your dogs don't know about what dogs are capable of.

DS's dog was soooo pampered before they had kids. She had a "touchy" stomach, vomited, took meds for vomiting, fed "special dog food.. read: $$$. Now she's not pampered..... eats ANYthing! Yes, including the "snickers" if she can get to them. Hurlllllllll!!! LOL!

Azzalea, I appreciate your opinion. We don't want to fool around with ground meat, which is why I asked the question. However--

The meat had a date on it of 1/11, pretty far out. It was sitting next to a block of cheese in the bag which would have helped keep it cold.

I'll be more attentive to the groceries next time, for sure.

When I was a kid, they didn't have the "Dead Stock Removal" businesses that appeared later, who, when you gave them a call, would come to your farm within a couple of days, usually, winch the dead (and without blood having been drained) animal up on to their (stinking) truck and take it to their (stinking) plant.

The hide would be removed, for processing into shoes, belts, purses and the like.

Some of the meat would be sent to mink ranches, fox farms, etc.

Some would be sent to pet food processors, where it was cooked and had other stuff added, to be put into cans and sold to townies and other pet "owners" to feed to their pets.

Some dogs like to bury their food and let it "age". I once had a dog that would bury the yeast rolls!

Someone here had some yeast rolls ... that the dog, having eaten 10 of that had only partly risen, then some problems over ...

... but had hidden the other couple in the closet or somewhere, that caused a bit of a mess on the carpet, as I recall.
