Valspar paint or BM Aura colour match? Difference in quality?
Comments (3)Color matching can sometimes be a problem when you are looking for a perfect match and are very picky about the color being exact. The problem isn't so much that Benjamin Moore can't match your color. They probably can. The problem is that most people choose a color from a color chip and then after they paint an entire room with that color, it doesn't end up looking like the color chip or it doesn't end up looking exactly like they expected. This could be because of lighting, shadows, sheen or the fact that painting a large area is always going to look different than a small sample chip. This is especially true with greens, yellows and light blues. You try to pick a squash like yellow and it ends up looking like the sun. You want a pale blue and it ends up looking like the sky. You want a sagey green and it ends up looking like mint ice cream. All of this has nothing to do with having your color matched in some other brand, but you may end up blaming your displeasure on a bad color match anyway, just because the color didn't come out looking like you expected. Also, it is important to realize that there is really no such thing as a perfect color match. All a paint store can do is get the color close enough to make most people happy. If you are not 'most people' and you are dead set in love with the color you have chosen, you should probably have it made in the brand that makes the color or you could be disappointed. As for the quality of the brand Valspar vs Benjamin Moore, this really depends on what you are using the paint for. I have never used Valspar, but I'm going to assume that it's medium quality paint and that the durability of the paint isn't going to be as good as Benjamin Moore Aura. If the area you are painting is going to take a beating and you need a great durable paint that you can wash all the time, then Aura will probably be better. If not, then you probably won't notice much of a difference. I'm really learning these days as a painter that all of these 100 percent acrylic paint brands you can buy these days are pretty much the same animal as long as you choose top of the line. In other words, if you are spending $30 or more for a gallon of paint, I expect it to be pretty good stuff....See MoreAnything in Valspar like SW Blonde?
Comments (12)Sometimes SW isn't even exact. After buy 20 tester quarts I decided to use Blonde for my kitchen and some other area. My granite has a lot of rusts in it and I liked that Blonde read a little rusty/gold. I had the painter use Cashmere and the result was not like I tested. The formula on the Cashmere was totally different and when I called them they said it was because of the different base. I even took some of the paint from my samle quart and put it next to the cashmere out of the gallon and they were different. Paint guy said it was a "better" color as it was more subtle. Only problem was it wasn't what I had thought I was getting. Even asked Funcolors about it and she said it was probably just the way they explained it at SW. The red they add for Cashmere is maroon and for the cheaper paint is called new red. Still a nice color but???...See MoreShould I be confident in a SW color match of BM paints?
Comments (3)I agree with nosoccermom, it really does depend. I had SW color match both Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray using the computer. Revere Pewter match was right on, but Edgecomb Gray was way off. This is where the person behind the counter comes in. The manager at the SW I went to took my BM Edgecomb Gray color chip and color-matched it by hand. She went through several different iterations of it and it came out an almost perfect match. I used it in all of the main living areas of my home. I would also recommend purchasing SW fan decks, they're inexpensive and you may find colors there that you like just as much and then you won't need to worry about matching. But I've used SW throughout my home, their paint is an amazing value (I used Harmony), watch for their sales and use coupons and you will be happy with the results, I'm sure!...See MoreColor Matching BM CSP in SW Paint?
Comments (10)Sherwin Williams has a data base where they can access all the formulas for competitors paint colors. If you go with Sherwin Williams (which I recommend doing) there will be no difference in the actual tint going into it. The only difference will be the base. The only possible way you would even notice the difference in the paints once tinted is if you put a sample under a microscope. BULL HOCKEY! I was all set to use SW version's of BM Wilmington Tan, BM Fernwood Green and BM Caliente. I had samples mixed up in both the BM line and in the SW line. The SW colors DID NOT match the BM colors at all. The base makes a HUGE difference in that the SW base is bluer. My painter put up a sample of BM Fernwood Green and right next to it, the mixed version from SW of Fernwood Green. The SW color lacked the depth that the BM color had and the subtleness. They are not the same. If you want a BM color, then get the color from BM. If you want a SW color, then get the color from SW. Also the reason your painter prefers SW is because SW gives a larger discount to painters so they get the paint for less money. I had to pay an additional charge for my painter to use the BM colors I wanted, but to me it was worth it to get the correct color....See Morepaintguy22
