1958 Home Window Well Fills w/Water - Do I have Drains?
Comments (5)If we trench around the whole house to put in PVC pipe a bit lower than any newly installed drain in the well, we'd have to dig up a few rows of cobble patio. That's the only area we can think of that has enough slope to drain the water away to. Covers won't work because the water is just filling in via the bottom. It's not rained hard enough lately to see if water is seeping in between the house & metal well. Thought maybe we'd rent an auger or Chipping hammer to hopefully dig down to cleanish gravel and clean the clay/soil out of the top. Thinking if that was done, maybe the water would trickle down. I take back what I said about my knowledge on fixes :). I do know I don't want to make a hole through the house to have an inside drain. Or - I'd "prefer" not to. Only a 1" pipe would fit between the walls which might be ok, but it would be very tricky to do without tearing apart all the drywall down there....See Morewwgwd - what would gw do - door frame lower than window frames
Comments (18)Since you asked "what would you do?", what I would do (which isn't what others here would do, and I'm not criticizing them) is to fix it with trim. Honestly, I don't think anyone will notice unless you point it out to them. My front door is trimmed below the two windows next to it and I never noticed before this post. I am very particular about a lot of things, but this isn't a battle I would choose since the cost to change is so high and the the resulting fix is so small. When we were building our home 14 years ago, we had a couple of minor probems, both of which our GC offered to pay to fix. We declined since neither were a big deal to us. If it were a question of safety, that's another story. I understand those who say make them fix it. It is your money and you're paying to get what you want. But, you're obviously thinking twice about it or you wouldn't have asked the question. Economic times are tough, and it could be one of the lowest paid workers on the job who has to end up paying for this error. Dee...See MoreRequesting feedback re: interior bronze window frames
Comments (7)Uneeda and Ultra, I also loved the look of the white casing in the photo above. It's something to think about as it would also reduce the exposed width of the perimeter frame on the interior. To me, this would give the impression of having a thin steel frame, rather than aluminum. However, most contemporary homes I've seen in real life, and in photos, only have window sills, rather than the entire casing. Since you are both in the field as professionals, no doubt you have plenty experience with both. Would you please elaborate a little further of your impressions of the bronze aluminum window frames without the white window framing? I think it depends on the architecture of the home, that very contemporary architecture would have no window casing. My primary interest is in the fixed glass picture windows in the family room where the aluminum frame width is not too bad. The interior décor is a concern as my cabinets are all cream with glazing. The only white is baseboards and window sills. Down playing the white seems best for my situation. It's a good question for the interior designer. I'll definitely send her an email to get her feedback. I'm still struggling with what to use for window coverings to address fading from direct morning sun....See MoreNew lake house build: bronze or black windows with white interior?
Comments (22)I am building a beachfront home and we are going to be using Nuema viny impact windows. I cannot decide between black/black or bronze/bronze windows. I was told black in more $$$. The outside will be white/white with a light gray metal roof. The inside of house will be white with a sand color floor and will be luxury vinyl. The den and kitchen will have cathedral ceiling and the ceilings will be ship lap. Should I go with the black or bronze. I got samples of both colors. The colors are flat, not metallic...
