Darlow's Enigma beneath two juniper trees?
Comments (11)Thank you! How far from the corner should I plant it? I am concerned about it getting taller than it is wide (as it appears in the above photo --- beautiful as that is!) and the flowers disappearing into the canopy of the juniper trees. I believe the one we had was shipped as a band. Is that too small to plant out, or does it need to be potted up and grown in a pot for a while? If I could plant it out right away then it certainly wouldn't be hard to dig a small hole for a band. The trick will be protecting it from the crows and critters while still small....See MoreDoes anyone grow Veilchenblau or Darlow's Enigma roses?
Comments (13)I grow both! Darlow's has just fully leafed out. It's always my latest leafer, latest bloomer but the only one that blooms consistantly all summer. I love it for the tiny little roses and mine has a BIG rose scent. Veilchenblau grows by the driveway and I"ve been pruning it torturously back every year the the fence. It's not large at all and trying to sucker because I cut it back so much. It is GORGEOUS in bloom and never has a single foliage issue all summer, except that it doesn't bloom again. Like the others, my Darlow is very disease resistant but it is the only rose to get powdery mildew if we had a lot of moisture in summer, and that is the only time it gets any spray (of powdered milk and water). I think there's a photo of that and the Mozart rose on the driveway arch somewhere on this forum!...See MorePicture of my first few roses on Darlow's Enigma :)
Comments (6)I am so pleased for your Enigma! Happy gardening days. I got mine two springs ago. It bloomed well on one branch this year, but not overall. It appears to be concentrating on putting on growth first. I expect that is a major miracle and blessing that it is at least thriving in this drought and heat. Can't wait for it to bloom so much that I will be able to enjoy it's heady clove fragrance. Mmmmm... I planted mine in front of Climbing Red Blaze. They are mingling happily together. D. Enigma's dainty foliage is covering Blaze's naked canes and Blaze is providing sturdy canes for Enigma to climb. Their color combination and different bloom sizes should make for a pretty bouquet next year. Maybe next year you and I will have something spectacular to share on here. :) ~Annie...See MoreAny ideas for a shade and heat - drought tolerant climber?
Comments (11)My beloved MAC is for me an obvious one that fulfills your criteria, but it depends rather on what you mean by gigantic. I think it might be one of those 'how long is a piece of string' things; she'll probably go as high as there's something for her to climb (thinking of Jackie's towering specimen), but I'd generally describe her as large but manageable, rather than gigantic. She doesn't take up much ground/horizontal space at all, and didn't mind being left to her own devices once established in my hot dry climate. I used to give her a long slow soaking 2 or 3 times per summer, just so she would know I loved her - nothing else. There have been occasional reports of mildew in some locations, but she's usually a marvel of good health. I can't remember if you already have her, but if you don't, I can't think why not... :-)...See MoreUser
