Okay, Kathy figured it out but I'm still stumped.

It'll probably show up now that I'm asking the question, but if it's not, can someone please explain to me how to get an avatar?

Click on your own icon, edit profile, then click on the avatar to the left and upload a photo from your computer.

Most of the avatars on this site are difficult to identify. I tried several and they looked the same way. So I looked at my desktop wallpaper, cropped a colorful butterfly from one of them, and had to resize it a couple of times to get what I liked.

When I look at nicole's avatar above my reply I can tell at first glance it is a flower.

The thing is, I've gone through those steps (unless I'm misunderstanding). I've done the edit profile thing and uploaded a nice picture of my cat. It shows up on my profile page. It shows up in the upper right corner of the screen where it says "Your Houzz" EXCEPT when I'm on the GW forums. www.houzz.com? Kitty picture. GW kitchen forum? No kitty picture. Not in the upper right corner, not with my posts. BUT, when I go into my profile and look at my activity and posts I've started...kitty.

So I'm feeling kind of stupid and not social-media savvy, but I'm not sure it's me. It could be them.

Mine shows on the cover page. I don't even remember how I set my avatar. It must be when I set the cover page photo. Mine now says "change cover photo". Does yours show up there?

Cawaps I can't see it here or in your profile. Click on "edit profile" then in the square where the pic should be click on the upper right corner of the square. Then you should be able to upload a pic to use.

You don't have an avatar. There's 2 places to set pictures for your profile. For the avatar, click directly on the spot where your avatar should be, the gray head. Then click on edit profile on the right. Then look to the far left there's a small square box with a camera icon in it, not the camera icon in the long middle picture. Once you click on the camera icon on the square it opens up the options to select a picture from your computer where ever you have them stored. Find the picture you want to use double click on it, it should add it to the page be sure to click apply /update on there and done to make the settings stay. If a picture doesn't work try another one, they could be a size not allowed.

This is what my profile page looks like, and has looked like for a while. If I'm reading your directions correctly, the cat photo is supposed to be my avatar. It doesn't show up anywhere as my avatar, but if I'm understanding right, it should. Any other insights?

Yes the cat picture should be your avatar. I have no idea why it shows for you but not anywhere else. I think I would try a few different pictures in case it's a size problem. Very strange. You might have to ask one of the Houzz people for assistance.

I have no idea why it isn't visible to us.

I found a setting under Edit Profile, Advanced Settings, where you allow your uploaded photos to be viewed by the public. You may have already checked this, but maybe de-select it and save the setting and then select it and save again.

Hopefully Emily can help with your missing avatar.

In looking at cawaps page, I suspect that nothing is checked under the advanced settings at the bottom.

@cawaps You have two different accounts. You are not currently logged into the one with the avatar uploaded. If you log in with username cawaps_gw and your password, you'll see your account with the cat.

Also, shoot us a message through support.houzz.com and we can help you out with restoring your original username. :)

Thank you guys. I thought they had fixed the two account thing. It cropped up when we migrated to Houzz and I went back and forth with their help to straighten it out. I thought I was down to one account--I guess not. Well now it all makes sense.

I logged out and then logged in again. I think it will work now...let's give it a go.
