Comments (11)Well the smell has been eliminated!! JOY! I scrapped the sides of the container to make sure the salmon/potatoe/apple compost was all it a pile then i added a bag of old lettuce and another potatoe that went bad... some sawdust and then today i added some snap peas and an apple core... and a handful of sawdust.. all i have is a nice earthy mushroom odor which i tend to enjoy and that is only when i have the top open while i look at whats going on... elswise no smell other than my normal garage scent... I am amaze to see how fast the materials i add turn to a nice fluffy brown compost.. so far this machine is a nice addition to the home... wouldn't pay $400.00 dollars for it but maybe if i had a lot of cash and lived in S.F. or N.Y. or someplace like that.. have a great weekend and thanks for listening!...See MoreA way to stop the Humanure troll...
Comments (36)By definition a troll is someone who comes on to a forum to create discord. Their agenda is to get others to respond to them or to talk about them - the way to deal with a troll is to act as if IT does not exist. Without attention they wither and go somewhere else to be obnoxious. Anyone who takes this person's "advice" seriously deserves what he gets. I am not as seasoned a gardener as some on this forum, but common sense tells me that when my dog urinates on a plant it dies and that human feces are not safe in their original state to spread about in your garden. If there is someone who is so unversed in reality as to be taken in by this person - they will fall prey to some idiot idea at some point and there is nothing you or I can do to protect them. Let's do what we are often advised to do for our roses - and step back from the troll....See MorePet Urine on Hardwood Floors
Comments (10)There is a product that will bleach wood safely, it's called oxalic acid. We used this years ago (we had to get it from the pharmacy at that time) to bleach out stains in our hardwood floors in front of the bathroom doorway. I remember that you mixed it with water and let it sit for a few minutes (15 or so) and then let it dry before we refinished the area. I found a product on the web at http://www.realmilkpaint.com/oxalic-acid-bleach.html and this should do the trick....See MoreCottage Living Special Issue!
Comments (9)cooperbailey - I used the term "cottage" lightly in my above post. DH & I built a lakehouse 2 yrs. ago, which is when I first discovered GW forums while researching appliances. I did post a few pictures back then, but that was when everything was pretty bare bones and no landscaping, etc. I should update. We call it a lakehouse because we plan to sell our home and retire there (eventually..)and w/ garage, mudroom, finished basement, etc., people have corrected us when we've referred to it as a cottage. We also use it weekends & holidays year round. People here in NH usually think of a cottage as a summer getaway. That said, it is relatively modest in size compared to many of the high falutin' lakehouses nearby. And the feel and decor is cottagey - light & airy w/ a lot of fresh white beadboard....See MoreSherwood Botsford (z3, Alberta)
