Urine off is suppose to be a very good product. All the products like Urine off may have to be reapplied a few times if it is really bad. Very important to pour a lot of the product on so it will soak. Must air dry. Many people put plastic over it so the product doesn't evaporate. Should be soaking for as many hours as possible. These products don't work within a half hour. Nature's Miracle is also highly rated. Same principle as Urine off. If you have used Urine Off correctly and tried in a few times, try another product like Nature's Miracle. It is actually more important to get rid of the odor. Depending on a number of factors, you may or may not get rid of the stain. If the stain is only on your hardwood finish, sanding will remove it. If the stain goes down to the wood, it would have to be sanded and then try these products again. Last resort, use wood bleach or replace the boards.

The enzyme cleaners did the trick for us. Took several applications but finally the odor was gone. That was carpeting in our finished basement. In another room our sick old cat had numerous accidents all in the same area. We were replacing the carpeting there anyway, so after she died the installers were there pulling out the old carpeting. You could see under the carpeting and padding that the porous plywood subfloor had been soaked in urine and reeked. I asked the installers what we could do. One young man said to pour an entire box of baking soda on to cover it and leave it on. This was a deal where they pulled out the old carpeting one day and installed the next. The next morning before installation we swept up the baking soda and you could already tell a huge difference. Then we laid down another flatter layer of baking sods on the same spot and the padding and carpeting was installed right over it. Thhis really worked. I have always been grateful to him for solving the problem. He said he had done this numerous times. So if you can fence off the affected area of the floor so no one tracks through it, I would try this. You might need to try both approaches.

Kim - You mentioned things I was worried about! lol You can put rugs (cheaper kinds) in the washer? I never even thought about not being able to shampoo a rug on top of the hw. Duh. :) Our driveway is stones so that wouldn't work either. I guess I really need to check into if there's a place near us that does professional carpet cleaning and see how much it is. Tina - That's cute your dog wipes her feet. Growing up we always wiped our dear Butch's feet. He was smart, we should've thought to train him with that! If we got hw I was thinking oak, mid range color, and less shine would be best. I bought a wool/silk rug for under the DR table back in October and didn't realize you shouldn't use a beater bar on it . . . For two months I ran my dyson over it often! I don't believe there's an adjustment for the suction. I now use the attachment and I find it to be somewhat of a pain. Doesn't help that the rug is mainly black, the cats like to sleep on it and the room gets a bunch of light. Our LR gets a bunch of light. That being said I don't think I'll ever buy a tufted rug again. It's not too bad since it's only one but I believe future ones will be cheaper synthetic or I'll go the hand knotted way and be done with it. But I think I'd feel better when something happened to them if I didn't spend gobs of money as accidents happen, iykwim. Heck, I've never had hw. Maybe I'll like it without rugs. Wouldn't that be easy. :) So as long as there's a good protective finish on there my cat's occasional hairball being there all day while we're at work should be ok? Honestly as far as cat hair, I'm not bothered by our vinyl floors. Well except by the side door where we're always in and out. The tiny stones get on my nerves. Oakley you're right as far as it sticking to the furniture. I'm forever running the sweaper on it. I thought it was pretty good until this morning when I was reading in the bright morning sunlight! Eek. I wouldn't trade our cats for the world but I've about had it with all the fur at the moment. I'm leaning toward hw I just needed to hear some thoughts. I'm nervous to spend the money and possibly not like them. I'm sure there's an adjustment period like anything else. Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I really appreciate it.

Unless you are raising mice in your house and have been doing it for years, there is no way a random couple of mice would leave any urine on your floors that you would notice. The yellow you see when you wipe is the stain and finish you are removing. keep doing that and you will have a light spot. the bit about mice peeing all the time is a myth....they do pee often to mark their trail so other mice will know they have been there, but not all the time.
