any recommendations for a vacuum for hard wood/tile and pet hair?
Comments (23)I went through this selection process during the summer. Our house flooring is tile, pavers and cork, with a few area rugs. We have two shedding dogs and a cat. I wasn't going to go for one of the spendier vacuums, but I also know that I wanted something more than the $150 entry level models. I settled on a Sears Progressive canister and I love it. It is HEPA, and has a bag, and there are cloth bags available for those with allergy issues. It has a powered head and the cord runs INSIDE the wand rather than being simply clipped to the outside of the wand like some of the cheaper units I saw. It is easy to change from the power head to the hard floor attachment, and all attachments ride on the canister....See Morecat urine stain/odor on hardwood floor
Comments (7)Urine off is suppose to be a very good product. All the products like Urine off may have to be reapplied a few times if it is really bad. Very important to pour a lot of the product on so it will soak. Must air dry. Many people put plastic over it so the product doesn't evaporate. Should be soaking for as many hours as possible. These products don't work within a half hour. Nature's Miracle is also highly rated. Same principle as Urine off. If you have used Urine Off correctly and tried in a few times, try another product like Nature's Miracle. It is actually more important to get rid of the odor. Depending on a number of factors, you may or may not get rid of the stain. If the stain is only on your hardwood finish, sanding will remove it. If the stain goes down to the wood, it would have to be sanded and then try these products again. Last resort, use wood bleach or replace the boards....See MoreDark hardwood vs lighter hardwood floors
Comments (61)When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time....See MoreHow can we remove straight lines from hardwood floors when sanding?
Comments (3)The straight lines look like cuts that are deep into the wood. Don't try to sand them out...you will run out of wood before you reach the bottom of the cut. They look dark because the paint has gone down into the crevasse. You still have finish on the wood floor. You will need to know your 'finishing' grit before you start. Traditionally you move up by #20 increments. Example: 60, 80, 100. Or 80, 100, 120. How many passes have you done with the 20grit? Becareful with these low grits. They can take down a hardwood floor much faster than you want. How much 'wood' is left on this floor? To complete a full sand/refinish you ideally want 3mm of wood or move above the tongue. How old do you think the paint was? Did anyone check for lead in the paint?...See Moregca1945
