From what I understand, the frost free cycles to keep frost from forming, so doesn't keep the food as solidly frozen as the manual defrost.
I purchased a new chest freezer for myself (can't remember brand & not home to check) and 2 DD's purchased Sears Kenmore chests recently. Their freezers are much sturdier--thicker walls (better insulation?) and better baskets. My plastic baskets slide down when full of food and my repairman told me it's a common problem and company says "don't fill the baskets". My old freezer had metal baskets, so it wasn't an issue. You probably won't have the basket issue with an upright, but the wall thickness and quality of drawers/bins/shelves might be worth comparing different brands/models. I've never had an issue with the mechanical parts of a freezer; they seem to run forever, but YMMV.

I am very happy with what I bought, and I think it is the right size for me, although it might be small for you. They are very easy to fill up.

We started out with a chest freezer, can't remember the brand, but when it went kaput I got a Kenmore upright. Soooo much easier for me to keep it organized and find things. I don't risk tumbling in like I did with the chest, digging around at the bottom!

I really like the alarm function on freeze/fridge appliances. That has come in handy several times.

I like my enormous chest type freezer, but Elery likes his Kenmore upright. He's had it for about 5 years and it's still working just fine.

My old Frigidaire is at least 20 years old and still works fine too.

I do not like the frost free option for my freezers, as I keep entire pigs and sides of beef, so mine is for long term storage. The cycling on and off of the frost free models compromises the contents if you want to keep them long term. I'll keep a side of beef, or part of it, until we have beef the following fall, same with pork, so I want it to still be good after a year or more. Shrink wrap and the old chest freezer works best for me.

I skipped the frost free feature too, I've never had a frost free freezer and I know the things tucked into my bottom mount freezer of my refrigerator do not keep well especially long term.

The young appliance clerk at our Sears didn't know freezers came manual defrost, but that's another story...

I had an old faithful 23 cubic foot Kelvinator upright, purchased about 6 months after we were married when my MIL gifted us with half a beef. It was more than 40 years old, worked flawlessly, never skipped a beat. Required defrosting about once a year, not even an especially traumatic chore.

When we moved 2 years ago, I sold it with the house and bought new energy efficient Whirlpool 18' manual defrost upright. I thought the size would suit our needs now - it really doesn't. I'm still crowding things into my bottom mount refrigerators freezer, and a couple of times I've even taken advantage of some space in a side by side a friend is temporarily storing in my garage.

Its more convenient to the kitchen in this house, fits into a cubby in a hallway (same floor) next to my laundry room. That does mean its being opened more frequently than old faithful was, but 6 months is almost too long to go without defrosting.

That old riddle about does the light stay on in the refrigerator when the door is closed? The one is this freezer does. I know this because it thawed wild blackberries on the shelf next to the light. The service man fussed with the door alignment about 2 hours when it was brand new, he did not sound completely convinced the light switch would make solid contact with the door and turn off when closed. When he left I took the bulb out.

So, it's not quite big enough, and I'd have trouble if it wasn't placed in a brightly lit hallway.

I miss old faithful.
