Exciting news from MS yesterday

W10 will be a FREE upgrade for all W7 or 8 users and will come with a new browser that speaks kinda like Siri. How kewl is that? later this yr. it will be out.

"FREE" only for one year...but it still remains an exciting offer. It's an easy way for MS to work the glitches out of W10...and to hopefully increase their popularity. :-) Also very interesting is the planned demise of IE. For a while both IE and the new browser will be available with W10...but I, personally, don't think that'll last too long.

I won't be first in line...but I'll be watching the calendar. ;-)

Apparently its Free UPGRADE to win10 insiders users/beta-testers, as well as win7 thru win8.1 licensed users.

Apparently most anyone beta testing would have a chance at free too. So xp, Linux, etc. Free for all that load the previews.

So it seems that folks are blending the RNB and RCS models here. The OP suggests that there's an RCS available at around 2k, which seems to be a very good deal but (a) not out of line with clearance prices or odd lot deals (e.g., a few at a given Costco) that others have reported and (b) not really suggestive of something that's been hanging around a couple of years (although I dunno, and maybe a serial # and a call to the mfg could clear that up). Things can happen with almost any type of range, from any manufacturer, but, properly installed, I wouldn't think this would be a dangerous product at all. I have three school age kids at home, a 12+ year-old gas range (not my first) that's been trouble free since day one, and an RNB on order. I'm not worried, and neither is my extremely . . . er, let's say admirably cautious spouse. In terms of reliability, I'd be more concerned about dual fuel in principle, and I'd be more concerned about Jenn Air in particular given both ad hoc reports, on this and other boards, and survey results from CR. I don't know MSRP for a new RCS, but a 30" RNB is about 4k and a 36" RNB starts at about 5k.

Lilleth, I think it only comes in stainless. We stopped by Sears tonight in hopes of seeing it. They didn't have a slide in on the floor, but did have a freestanding. Frankly, I was underwhelmed. I do NOT like the burner configuration at all. The oven shelves felt almost flimsy and didn't slide easily at all. The warming drawer is really more of a standard storage drawer with a heating element. Didn't appear to have any insulation at all. Sidewalls were just a standard piece of thin metal. Oh, and if you stop by Sears, prepare yourself to have a discussion with the salesperson that they DO INDEED have an induction slide in. When I asked to see it, the salesman insisted they didn't offer one. He finally signed on to their website at my request so I could point it out to him.

Actually, the Actilift formula is not about actively lifting stains off the fabrics but to prevent them from attaching to the fibers in the first place. It contains an enzyme that eats off loose cotton fibres. The fibres become smooth and dirt has less surface to attach to, thus it can be washed off more easily. That's the theory. It takes four to eight washes for the detergent to fully treat the clothes. Dash is a mid-level detergent. It used to be famous because it was the only detergent available here to have a built-in fabric softener effect - Dash 2-in-1 was its name. The softener effect has been remove as the brand got revamped. Now, Dash's selling point is the strong scent it leaves on clothes - even without softener. Dash is all about fragrance. 100 - 135 ml of Persil? Did you get a Jumbo Pack? The bigger the box, unfortunately, the more fillers it contains. True for Henkel and P&G detergents in Germany. OHMYGOODNESS, BECKY - I know you must be walking on a cloud. Congratulations - take a deep bow. What an honor. I know it's a lot of hard work getting ready for a show, and don't envy you. Hope you do well. As for myself, I've declined an invitation from our local art center to enter into the summer show. To me, all I can think about is the work involved. I was displaying at a local nursery, and it was so much work to take it all out a couple weeks ago, when I decided things had been there long enough w/no recent sales, that I said I'll NEVER again take anything outta this house to market or show. Again, I hope you make a big splash and get lots of business from your exhibit.

Anne it will be free to anyone as long as they install it within the year. It doesn't end after the year. They are giving users one year to install.

I have an iPad with Siri and also a Android phone with about the same capability, and I find neither to be so useful as to warrant regular use. Similarly, my two family members with iPhones tell me they rarely use Siri when out and about. I'm not sure how much different such an onboard feature in Windows would be.

Microsoft's offer to upgrade everyone to Win 10 is likely for its benefit, not that of users. In 12 months or so, after the upgrade to Win 10 period has passed, expect to hear that Microsoft will be ending security and other maintenance services for any earlier versions.

Is that sinister? No. It's just practical. I'm sure they realize how much effort they wasted with XP hanging on for so many years. It's much better to bring everyone up to current and then move one.

Question do you think as with all new OS's that we will need to burn new recovery disks? after we install W10.

I agree completely...and I agree with their probable decision to do so. As it is these days...there are still too many balls in the air IMO. I got a bit cranky years back when I couldn't get a few older graphics programs to work with my upgraded system...but in the long run...I found better programs and was glad for the push to do so.

nut, I'm not sure if you intended your question for me, but I'll jump in.

You raise an interesting thought, in the following way. Many people don't bother to make recovery disks, and indeed they really don't need to, because so many (most or all?) PCs ship with a recovery partition on the hard drive.

So take a PC with Win7 on it. A year from now, the user does the free upgrade to Win10. If the offer for upgrades to Win10 from earlier versions is time limited, then the recovery sector is of no use. In that case, it would be essential to make Win10 recovery disk for each PC. I don't know if that guess describes what the state of affairs will be, or if something else may happen. Might PC manufacturers put out updates for the recovery sectors?

I'm sure more will be said about this topic by the normal sources when the time comes.
