12 New Ones Purchased Yesterday

Visited a local hosta nursery yesterday (Shades of Green in Aylmer, Ontario). Had a list with me. Wanted to (try to) contain myself and purchase only 2 or 3. Husband laughed at that. Knows me too well. I was soooo excited to see their 600+ varieties (I literally jump up and down to the amusement of the staff) - I could have spent all day there! Will definitely go back.

Came out with a dozen, some on my list, others not so much. But my little old mum was with me (visiting from out of town) and she picked out 3 for me as a little gift. Her choices: Nate the Great, Hi Ho Silver, and City Lights.

Also got (from the list): Andrew, American Halo, American Hero, Jimmy Crack Corn, Cutting Edge, Niagara Falls, Pandora's Box. Threw in at the last minute (not on the list): August Moon, Pineapple Punch.

So far my fav in the group is American Hero, pictured here.

Yesterday my children spontaneously took the old, torn, dirty tent-like top off the "clubhouse" of our wooden swingset. The garbage truck came rumbling down the alley at that very moment, so I opened the gate and ran after it (yes, I have no dignity) and gave this tarp to the collectors. Wow! Something didn't have to knock around my garage or backyard for a year before getting rid of it. This is b/c not only do I want to dejunk, but that I recognize that a lot of stuff that appears harmless is used by my children in ways that are dangerous. We had the old Fisher-Price red toddler swing-set swing in the garage for months, and on Monday I saw my three year old try to use it like a sled down the slide. So that went into the trash immediately. We have too much stuff floaing around waiting for a Salvation Army pick-up.

You guys are hilarious!! Calliope, I can't believe he didn't notice your hair!! My dh also buys land at the tax sale auctions. There is one piece the state is looking at and he could make a good profit, so I had to eat my words on that purchase, too. No, I didn't break the bank or have to use the mortgage payment to buy the machine. I'm just not used to buying something that expensive without discussing it with him first. (We're both good about doing that.) Well, I still haven't told him yet. I went out with the girls last night so, I only saw him for about an hour and really didn't think the time was right. My older machine is an embroidery machine and the new one is a straight stitch quilting machine, so I really can't swap them out. That is one reason I bought this machine. I can't do any sewing while the older machine is doing it's embroidery (I've pointed this out to him numerous times, LOL!!). I don't have it hidden, but he isn't the most observant person either (it's sitting on the floor with a cover on it and he's walked by it at least a dozen times). But when I set it up, I think it will be obvious because I will have to set up a separate table for it. I think I'll do that this afternoon and see what he says when he gets home. I'd really like to start sewing on it! (((Taking a deep breath))) I'll update you tomorrow (or late this evening?) Thanks for all the laughs, this has been a fun thread.

got my new Electrolux induction range yesterday

I absolutely LOVED my Electrolux induction range. My friend was so impressed with this stove that she bought her own (a slide-in) about a year later. Last year, after 4 1/2 years of use, my stove died ....there was a loud 'pop' after I'd boiled a kettle, then the control panel went blank. Absolutely no power. The oven still worked, though. The next morning, I thought I'd just try to turn it on and....magically, IT WORKED!! It continued to work for 2 days....I thought it was a miracle. But then while I had the large burner on, there was a HUGE 'bang', along with some some out of the back, the panel went black, then flashed an error code. My induction top was now definitely, without a doubt, officially dead and I discovered that the part to fix it cost $700 and the labour at least another $700 (CDN). Our 4 year extended warranty no longer covered it. We ended up buying a new stove (kenmore elite induction, plus an extended warranty...through Sears outlet for a little less than what it would have cost us to fix the Electrolux). The kenmore is ok. The induction burners work like the Electrolux, but I really preferred almost everything about the Electrolux to the kenmore...except for the fact that it died after a crazy short time of owning it! For that reason alone, I would never buy another Electrolux, no matter how much I might want to. Earlier I had read about similar consumer complaints, but I thought that they were probably aberrations, or the odd lemon...but I don't think that is the case........ Last week my friend called to tell me that her Electrolux induction top had also just died!! Luckily for her, though, they bought an extended 5 year warranty and are covered. I do NOT recommend this stove...range or slide-in....and offer my stories as a warning to others. Go ahead and buy it if you have lots of money, can afford the extended warranty, and can still afford to spend $1500 for repairs or more if you need to replace the unit!

New Cambria Quartz Install Yesterday

I’m sorry to add onto a thread with more complaints, but we are in a horrible bind with our Cambria slab order and as a result have been displaced from our home and our entire kitchen remodel delayed over a month. We’ve had to incur all costs of housing and a rental car (we are out of town), and there is still no resolution in sight. We ordered two of the Britannica Warm slabs which were due to be installed prior to Thanksgiving. They arrived and were so far apart in color that our fabricator rejected them because they’ll both be used in our kitchen. No slabs were available so new ones had to be produced with a new arrival date of 12/11 (install 12/18)...now a full month delay and we have no sinks in our house since all countertops are being replaced so we couldn’t return home. Second set of slabs arrived and SAME problem AGAIN. fabricator returned slabs and told us that Cambria’s response was “you shouldn’t order this if you require two slabs in a kitchen.” Which our developer says is crazy because our kitchen isn’t even that big! Keep in mind we are now out thousands of dollars without any compensation. Cambria is supposedly sending some new slabs now from Minnesota...but no promises and the install date is now post Christmas (12/28). We now are potentially having to pay $700 to get plywood counters and temp sinks installed just so we can get back home and kids can be home for Christmas. But then we will have to leave AGAIN for them to do the install if and only if these next slabs work. And we can’t be in the house with the workers over multiple days because my husband is a high risk patient. And since all work has been delayed due to countertops (ie plumbing, tile backsplash, etc), we are looking at an additional time we have to find (and pay for) another home. I know these are first world problems but it’s unacceptable for Cambria to not take accountability and just say “you shouldn’t order two slabs.” Even our installers are over it and asking us to consider changing countertops away from Cambria, but we spent so much time finding what we wanted and now we've gone through so much trouble we really want the vision we had and not settle. We didn’t pay for this remodel to settle. Please help. What are our options? Our fabricator is saying Cambria is just throwing up their hands. And now 20 more days before new slabs! appreciate any thoughts on how we can truly get a resolution with the product we want as well as be fairly treated regarding the costs we have incurred. Thanks so much.

'Nista, you won't be let off the hook until we see some of the new guys. This is a treat because not many orders are arriving by mail, and we are left with folks who can pick them up by the dozen! You are so fortunate to have such a nursery within driving distance.

We'll be waiting patiently until the pics show up.....(tap tap tap tap)........ :)

Here's American Halo. I had American Hero on my list. I think I got mixed up when I saw American Halo and put it on my cart. It's not really wowing me. I hope I learn to love it.

Here's Andrew. Saw this one a while ago on this forum as a mature specimen and loved the curl. It'll be a while yet for this baby to mature but worth the wait, I'm sure.

Hi Ho Silver. The 2nd of mom's picks. I really like this little guy. Will only get to be about 10"x16" I think, but very noticeable in the garden.

Mom's 3rd pick was Nate the Great because she liked the name. It's quite big already. I don't recall seeing anyone else post pics of Nate the Great so not sure if this one is going to wow me.

Pandora's Box has been on my mini wish list for a while. Don't have any others except Blue Mouse Ears. So PB has been planted right next to BME. Photo is a bit deceiving, it is really small but looks big in the photo. I want to get more minis and do a pot landscape thing. Anyone have any favourite minis?

Great haul. Love your choices and thanks for the pictures. I really like the Jimmy Crack Corn and City Lights. This year, I seem to be drawn to the yellow/chartreuse ones more than in the past and those pictures show why! :)

Hostanista, great hostas and they are all a decent size. One of my life long friends lives in St. Thomas. Jimmy Crack Corn looks just great and based on Melati's pic - American Halo is going to be a standout!
I noticed that you had their names on little rocks already, too. Very organized.

Hostanista, those are beautiful specimens. I think you will have success with Pandora's Box, whereas others may have failed.

My Cutting Edge surprised me re the size it has attained.

Melati, your American Halo has blown me away. I want one now.

Nice plants! The place I got most of mine the guy digs and sells his own plants, and I get one lousy eye. Your American Halo is bigger than my three year old. I think you'll like it, even if it takes a while to grow. I've been happy with American Hero, although it's not growing fast, either. Cutting Edge and City Lights have been good growers and look good, too. You'll be showing them off, esp. Cutting Edge.

Never saw Hi Ho Silver before, but now it is looking quite interesting. May I suggest you also look at Verna Jean and White Dove? Two similar and small hosta which come highly recommended.

Also, if you wish to create a photo account with Flickr or Photobucket, you can begin with a free account, and see if that is sufficient. I'd recommend Flickr which is easier for me than Photobucket, which has made changes lately that don't make it easy. In either case, you look for the HTML code.
