I went to the quilt shop to buy some Solvy to do some embroidery, and left with a new sewing machine!! It's a Brother PQ-1500S. The shop is moving (just down the shopping center),so they had a great sale on a floor model, and I couldn't resist. Dh worked late and I just didn't have the guts to tell him. I would have been using it, but I had a Girl Scout leaders meeting in the evening, so I didn't even have a chance to set it up! any suggestions on how to tell him?

Lucille, Before you decide that I need to work on repairing my relationship, can I just tell you of another, similar in some sort of intent, that happened some time ago......... We remodeled our kitchen, including the countertops. I used 6" ceramic tiles on the countertops. They looked great. One of the countertops was between two tall cabinets, and across two base cabinets, in another part of the kitchen. Because the cabinets were a white/glaze (before our time, but we decided to keep them) and the floor was a white ceramic, and we used a lighter tile, then decided to use red on the soft items in the kitchen (towels, curtains, etc.), when it came time to get the new tilework grouted, for this small area I chose the 'cayenne red' grout. What a pop of color this would make, I thought. Well, as I completed my first row of tile (I've done this many times before, incidentally), I decided that it would not do. I work slowly, but the finished product is always perfect. I decided not to go on, that the color was not what I thought I wanted. I was standing, looking critically at it, making a final decision, when DH came into the kitchen. He wanted to know how I was doing, and I said that I was not happy with the way it looked. I was gently picking at the red grout, trying to ascertain how much of a mess it was going to make as I removed it. Well, Lucille, he then proceeded to take the ENTIRE bucket of grout and turn it upside-down onto the counter, grabbed the trowel and roared "Well, here's the way you're supposed to do it" as he began to quickly smear the grout from one side to another. I almost fainted, that he would come in there and as I was beginning to remove what I had already put between the tiles, he piled an entire bucket on to the surface. It took me a couple of hours to repair that damage. I later chose another bucket of the basic, neutral color we used on the other countertops, but not before several hours of cleaning, scraping and wiping up cayenne red grout, incredulous that he could have done this, the entire time. it has taken me more than that to try to repair the thoughtless damage he caused by piling ground-up road, chunks of tar and rocks, dust of unknown composition onto my previously pristine, organic garden. So, before you criticize my relationship, perhaps you should have thought that you did not know all the facts! :)

DH says I'm negative and pessimistic, and it's bringing him down

Since this was brought to the top, I thought I would provide an update: counseling works (see other thread). Regarding my negative and pessimistic behavior, our marriage counselor did not believe I am negative (and I don't either). He felt I was just the kind of person who approaches things in a way that can be CONSTRUED as negative, especially if the person takes things personally. For example, someone might share an idea and I generally respond by coming up with reasons why it won't work. It doesn't mean I don't like the idea at all, I just want to troubleshoot the idea a little. His advice for dealing with my DH was that I train myself to say a positive before I give my reasons why something won't work. My understanding was that I would do this to benefit the person sharing an idea with me, so they won't immediately think I'm sh*tting all over their idea etc. Now, he ALSO told DH that his job is to reiterate to me what he thinks I said, to clarify whether or not he's understanding me. So if I say "it may not solve all the problems because of blah, blah, blah" and what he hears is that I think it's a bad idea (when that's not what I'm saying) then he is supposed to respond "Are you telling me that you think this is a bad idea?" instead of just getting mad. So we BOTH have to take steps to improve our communication, and we are, so it's been a lot better. I wish I could give specific advice to you, cheerful1. My communication problems with DH were a result of BOTH OF US having issues. I'm too blunt and direct for someone like my DH, and he has too much of a tendency to assume rather than seek clarification, which resulted in him assuming the worst and then being too angry with me to want to discuss it. So I'm learning to soften the comments a little, and try (as much as possible) to phrase them in a way that doesn't blame him. I wish I had a specific example but I don't. Counseling really helped clear it up for us. In fact, DH very recently told me that when I would say things to him in a blunt and direct manner, he interpreted it to mean that I did not love him. For some reason, he thought if I loved him then I would sugar-coat stuff. ??? News to me but it explains a lot. Why didn't he say this to me years ago? I don't know, I didn't ask. I told him I appreciated him sharing that with me. jamielovescoffee_az: you are absolutely correct that it seems to be all in the approach and not necessarily the message. By the way, DH later told me...MONTHS later...that the coffee he insisted on buying WAS gross, and that I was right after all. Now, though, I think that whole argument was PETTY and I'm working on just letting some things go. Why should I be so concerned over what kind of coffee he gets for himself at his work?

Hi Kmttsmom, Thank you for being kind. I'm really not trying to get a reaction or hurt anyone and I think I've stated it over and over, but it bears repeating. :) I'm hurt too, and confused at how my estrangement got to the point it did. Years and years of misunderstanding, letting things go when they really should have been talked out then, not feeling like I could say anything because it would be taken the wrong way. So I'm just trying to understand it from a mother's point of view. And it seems like a lot of mothers are defensive (that's ok, they have a right to be, but then they take it as I'm attacking) and words like "spoiled brat" come into the picture. I'm not, nor was I ever, a spoiled brat. I was raised one of the least spoiled people you would ever meet. No electricity, no television, catchment water, no neighbors. No Christmas tree, very few presents for my birthday. My mother never bought me a car, paid for insurance, college, rent, bills, etc. I had to give away my toys to more needy kids time and again. We recycled everything. I moved out at 14 to live with my dad because of her emotional abuse, and I lived pretty much on my own because he had to work 150 miles away and would be gone for days at a time. I walked to school a few miles away and walked home, did my homework, made myself dinner, and went to bed. And I forgave her in high school. I was able to put it all behind me and move forward. And I included her in my daughter's birth. And when she needed a place to live, I let her move in with me. And then I realized she was an energy vampire. She literally sucked me dry, blamed me for everything, took my friends and started to turn my daughter against me. And she walked all over me. Time and again. So, my defenses go up too, when mothers just say that kids just need to respect their parents, and "get over it". It's a very emotionally charged situation. I didn't come on here for support, I came on here to learn what others think. So I think part of the conflict is our approach to what we expect from this board. I'm shocked at being told to go away, that my opinion is not wanted or needed or valued because I don't agree and I'm asking questions. It seems it's either one way or the highway. And when I apply this to what women here are saying about their damaged relationships the correlation seems too blatant to ignore. I don't think anyone here is a "Bad Mother". The fact that people are even talking about it indicates that they are truly trying to be good people. I'm sure everyone on here has their good and bad moments, and it can be hard to judge emotion when it's in writing, without any facial gestures or other non-verbal clues. I guess this isn't the place for me to be asking my questions because it is seen as an attack, and I felt just terrible the past few days, because I feel bad that people are taking my words that way, and now I feel attacked too. Thank you, everyone, for your support. I did have a good cry (several, in fact) and am feeling more calm and accepting, I guess. SS is doing pretty well right now. It ended up being mostly just the usual; he came home filthy (he hadn't changed his underwear, bathed, or brushed his teeth all weekend), hungry (he had chocolate milk and two pieces of pizza as he wasn't allowed a third piece all day Sunday), exhausted (he's allowed/encouraged to stay up very late -after midnight- until BM goes to bed and then she takes him to sleep with her). Also as usual he was pretty much ignored except when dragged around on Sunday to be shown off to relatives (and we think used as an excuse to get invited to dinner). He tried to discuss some of his concerns re Christmas with BM; fortunately she didn't scream but also apparently didn't listen/ask questions/express concern. She again told him there was no money for presents or "a Christmas"; he finally told her that he didn't want to come and she just said "You are". Our attorney has told us that one withheld visitation occurring after a mod petition has been filed almost certainly will have no effect on anything custody wise and at most might result in a fine. Make of that what you will. :-) SS is feeling better since he was informed of a certain decision that DH did not make lightly. He requested to speak with his counselor again as he's been very upset about it all. I spoke with her briefly as we're always trying to make sure that the right thing is being done, and to be sure that we're not inadvertently influencing SS (it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a poker face when tales of BM are being recounted). She agreed that it is possible that BM has something planned that doesn't involve ruining SS's holiday out of spite - but she didn't really believe that any more than DH, SS or I do. SS was convinced that not only will she not get him anything, as she told him, but that she will deliberately stay up very late so that Santa does not come to bring him anything either. His other concern was that since Santa has never left him any presents there, nor is he mentioned, obviously (to him) Santa does not bring his BM anything because "she's bad". So he also worried that if Santa brought him presents but left nothing for BM that she would scream at him. He said something very concerning to me on the way to counseling yesterday. He told me that sometimes he wished he were in heaven so he didn't have to see BM. When I questioned him he said his main concern was that what if it was all wrong, what if "bad people" were allowed into heaven and then he would still have to see her anyway. He has promised me if he has more thoughts like that to discuss them with me, DH, counselor, teacher, anyone. Unfortunately he told Sunday school teacher that BM was mean to him and screamed, so they discussed in class about honoring thy father and mother, and it was explained to him how he should behave better so she is "not so stressed". I cannot fault the woman because I am sure that she was imagining a typical "I asked the kid five times to shut off the TV and come to dinner and then I yelled" kind of thing - but poor SS. It really makes me wonder how many kids who are sexually or physically abused are asking for help and the adults are just not hearing it. We also confirmed other suspicions this weekend. BM's BF is in prison for parole violation; he's a career criminal. But as soon as he gets out they'll be married and live happily ever after, with custody of SS, and both of us paying CS. Anyway, that being the case in fantasyland, BF's mother is often over visiting and SS is encouraged to call her GM. (Strangely not step-grandma, nor "my mother's future husband's mother". Huh.) Anyway, we found that, well, her record is not quite as extensive as her son's. The years of drug possession charges (in addition to others) are not particularly surprising to either DH nor I due to the fact that SS had already told us that she is "funny" because she always thinks that "bugs are on her skin and in her hair". We haven't even started to figure out what to do with that mess yet. To wrap up my very long update, the pet may/may not be doing better. She's on steroids; vet said she might show a brief improvement for a very short time and then it's rapidly downhill. She is showing improvement so DH and I are holding out hope for a miracle (or a misdiagnosis; we opted out of the $1500 tests so it was more of an educated guess to her condition). Meanwhile we are taking advantage of the fact that everyone at the moment is feeling OK to do holiday stuff together; if we could just freeze an evening in time for a while I think I'd be happy.

Be brave! Just blurt it out!!! And apologize that you had a weak moment, and couldn't resist! And make his favorite dinner! Happens to us all - machines keep following me home!

Well, if he's anything like my DH...

I did a similar thing when I got my current Brother machine. They had been used for a few days at the Sewing & Quilt Expo, so were on sale for half price. This was before I had a cell phone and I didn't have any way to call home, so I just bought one!

The first day of the Expo (before I'd even thought about buying a machine) I came home and jokingly said "You're welcome" and he asked for what, so I told him "I didn't buy a $5,000 sewing machine!" He rolled his eyes. Two days later I came home and said again that I didn't buy a $5,000 sewing machine, but I needed his help getting something out of the car! :) He took it very well. He figures anything that keeps me as happy as I am when I'm sewing is worth it. Since then I got a second machine and a quilting frame, and he was okay with that, too!

Or you could just set it up and start using it, and if he's as oblivious as most hubbies, he'll never notice it's a different machine. Of course, he may notice the charge on the credit card bill! :)

Hide it in a closet for several weeks, then bring it out and start using it on a weekend. IF dh notices and asks about it....you simply say..... "what? this machine? oh, I've had this one for quite some time....."

Donna, I can use the cell phone excuse. I didn't have my cell phone on me and he had a very busy day at work where I probably wouldn't have been able to get a hold of him anyway. And, like you said, I didn't buy a $5,000 machine!!

magothyrivergirl, Yes, it was a weak moment. I've been talking about this machine for some time and fussing at my embroidery machine for the past few days, so this shouldn't be too big of a surprise.

I'm supposed to have a girls-night-out tonight, so maybe after a few glasses of wine, I'll have the guts to blurt it out when I get home?

Be sure to tell him how much money you SAVED by buying the floor model. Men usually like to hear the business side of why you bought it. And mention that it makes you so happy to have a new machine to work with - a happy wife means a happy husband. lol

First, tell him that the car has some expensive part that is broken and has to be fixed. Then tell him that you got pulled over for speeding and that it's a $350 fine and points on your driving so the insurance is going up. Then finally tell him that one of your relatives (one that he can't stand) is coming to visit for an indefinite amount of time. After he peels himself off of the ceiling, tell him "I was just kidding, actually I bought a new sewing machine." He will be grateful that the other stuff isn't true and won't get mad.

Well..........just laughing and shaking my head. I like to play role reversal when I have questions like that. IOW, would my husband be equally as afraid to bring home an expensive man toy? Would he be wondering how to break it to me? Har, har, har. (Picking self up from floor where I landed after the laughing fit).

I managed to keep my cool when he came home one time and told me he bought a piece of land at an auction on the spur of the moment. He did sell it some time later and actually made enough profit on it to renovate our kitchen. (So glad I kept my cool, and didn't have to see how good crow tastes).

Also has brought home expensive tools and has more weed eaters than hands. LOL. I tend to let him in on my purchases but whether he likes them or not, doesn't stop me. I trumped his land with a house. Still laughing. Also made a profit on it.

Unless you do this routinely and often, and if you didn't have to mortgage the house......I think I'd do what maghothyrivergal said and just blurt it out.

(I did, however, hide a rescured kitten in a back bedroom successfully for a month until I could figure out how to tell him and the roofer blew my cover).

My hubby crunched (as in totaled) my car about a month ago. When we shopped for a replacement, I opted for the somewhat older model, saving us just about the cost of the Juki I've been drooling over. So the day after getting the car, I ordered the Juki with the money we "saved"!

Does your DH ask you every time he buys a new tool?

Or......put away your current machine and put the new one in its place and see if he notices?

I once had a customer in my retail job who was buying some great red Italian pottery from us. She once told me she was adding a cup here, a bowl there so she wouldn't be stocking the cabinets with a lot of new pottery. She also said when I called her to tell her the order was in to just say "Hi, Anne, it's Teresa.....drop by and see me soon!" I was not to mention the new pottery is here! LOL!

OMGosh, I am still laughing. I never thought about him not even noticing. I went to England for a couple weeks to visit my daughter and her husband. I left with hair down to my bottom. I had to lift it to sit down, and came back with it cropped short and a little Celtic tattoo on my shoulder. He didn't notice either until I brought it to his attention a couple days after I got home.

You guys are hilarious!! Calliope, I can't believe he didn't notice your hair!! My dh also buys land at the tax sale auctions. There is one piece the state is looking at and he could make a good profit, so I had to eat my words on that purchase, too.

No, I didn't break the bank or have to use the mortgage payment to buy the machine. I'm just not used to buying something that expensive without discussing it with him first. (We're both good about doing that.)

Well, I still haven't told him yet. I went out with the girls last night so, I only saw him for about an hour and really didn't think the time was right. My older machine is an embroidery machine and the new one is a straight stitch quilting machine, so I really can't swap them out. That is one reason I bought this machine. I can't do any sewing while the older machine is doing it's embroidery (I've pointed this out to him numerous times, LOL!!).

I don't have it hidden, but he isn't the most observant person either (it's sitting on the floor with a cover on it and he's walked by it at least a dozen times). But when I set it up, I think it will be obvious because I will have to set up a separate table for it. I think I'll do that this afternoon and see what he says when he gets home. I'd really like to start sewing on it!

Calliope, I've had lots of haircuts my DH didn't notice, but the most extreme was cutting off about 8". He kept looking at me funny, but didn't say anything. I finally told him I'd had a bunch of hair cut off!

Odessa, that's too funny about the weed eaters. My hubby has so many screwdrivers and socket wrenches he could open a hardware store, but of course he can't ever find just the right one in the garage and has to go buy another. And he doesn't buy one - he buys a set.

Donna, that is true with us and the tools. I can't ever find a tool if I need one. I'll buy one and tell dh it stays in the house and next time I need it, it's at the barn or garage!

Well, I told dh at the end of dinner. He smiled, stood up, said "good for you" and gave me a kiss!!! Then he asked if that was what I was fussing about the other night. I was having problems with my stabilizers and the embroidery piece I was working on. Very frustrating.

Don't I have a wonderful dh????

Now, to set it up :-)

You DO have a wonderful DH! You should also have more confidence in yourself and your decisions - he clearly supports you in them.

That's great that he encourages you! Reminds me...I had my MIL's old serger (probably a 1970's model) and that thing was the most impossible and frustrating machine to thread! One day I had been struggling with it for a really long time - even enlisted DH's help. Finally he said, "Why don't you just buy a new one?" I was out the door before he finished the question! LOL

Congratulations on getting over that hump. I am not surprised, he sounded like a good guy. Enjoy your new toy. I am the one how is reluctant on buying things, my DH is always pushing me to get something new. New fabric is not one of my hesitations thought.Jayne
