Skittish wireless mouse

My mouse pointer seems to have a mind of its own. The control panel mouse dialog allows for adjusting the speed but not the range. Moving the mouse only an inch moves the pointer across the entire screen. My belief is that adjusting the range would help more than adjusting the speed. On the other hand, the pointer seems to just jiggle off in the any direction for no reason as I try to get it over a pick box. Where is the source of this problem? Is it the operating system (windows), the wireless mouse/keyboard maker (Logitech) or the application (Autocad in my case)?

I us a Logitech wireless mouse on my laptop rather than the touch pad. I never liked the Logitech software so I don't install that and the mouse works just fine. Best mouse I've had for battery life :)

In Control Panel for Mouse is a setting for pointer speed .. I would think that setting should fix your problem most likely.

I have been using wireless Logitech mouse's for quite awhile and love them.
Mine has done exactly the same thing yours is doing just before the batteries needed to be replaced. I would have no control over it as it would wonder way up and off to the right.
How are your batteries?

Is it a laptop or a desktop computer? If it is a laptop and you have not disabled the touchpad, it can cause the cursor to move around if one of your hands brushes the pad.

Click the Start Button in the bottom left corner of your screen then follow these arrows: Start> All Programs> Microsoft Mouse> Microsoft Mouse> Buttons> Right Side Button> select Disable from the drop down list.

can you post a picture of your mouse or give us a link as to what one it is. Maybe one of us have one just like it and can show you where to open it.... I could be wrong but I don't think a wireless mouse has any life without a battery. Mine is hard to see...my husband has one just like mine and he could not find where to put the batteries. He had to ask me and he hated doing it....lol patti

Bill, As stated above, there should be a Dongle (Nano Receiver) that plugs into a USB Port on your computer. Depending upon which Gearhead Wireless Mouse you have, the Dongle could be stored Under the Battery Cover or you may just have a Slot in the Bottom of the Mouse for Storage (no cover). To make the Mouse work: Remove Dongle and Plug it into an Open USB Port on your computer Remove the Battery Cover and place Fresh AA Battery/Batteries in the mouse (Make sure they are installed in the correct direction) Turn the Mouse to the On Position (Switch on Bottom of the mouse) Turn on your computer and allow Windows to Install Drivers for your mouse. If by some chance Windows Can't install drivers for you, go to the manufacturers website, download and install the drivers you downloaded Because you have not listed a Model Number for the mouse: Older Mice had Much Longer USB Dongles (hopefully the dongle hasn't been lost, there was NO On Mouse Storage). The Oldest Mice had a Box with a Cord that you set on your Desk (the mouse was still wireless though)! If by some chance you have one of the older mice, there might also be a Connect Button on the Dongle and the Mouse. If it does have a connect button; you'd First press the Connect Button on the Dongle and next the Connect Button on the Mouse.

I also have a Logitech wireless. Tried all of the above.
Finally, using a fingernail, pried up the top metal covering by ~ 1/8 inch and blew in it. 2 or 3 mini-mini dust bunnies came out with repeated blows. Behaves now.

If a laptop, turn off the touch pad. Another thing -- when I am using the mouse with laptop and use the laptop surface with the mouse - it doesn't work as intended. The laptop surface is not good for mouse-ing.

Logitech usually includes its own software with their mice. I believe its called Setpoint. If you have Setpoint or can download it from Logitech you may have better luck instead of using the Windows mouse software.
