Since you mentioned Lady of Shallot loves to be in a pot, I googled images. Oh my goodness, what a beauty.

I have an area in the garden with colors of yellow, orange, white, or blue. There's also a decaying stump from a previously removed palm that serves as a large pot base. This Lady, in a beautiful pot, would fit in perfectly.

I've never grown a rose in a pot so I can't help with your question. Actually I've never even grown any rose in Florida.

Anytime you want to post some pictures, we gardeners would love to see them.

Hi, I love that you started this thread!! I have had Blue Girl and Double Delight in a pot for 5 years here in FL. They are not grafted on Fortuniana but they are doing great. I had a different Blue Girl in the ground before I moved to FL along with dozens of other roses.

I have not put any roses in the ground here in FL yet. My pot experience has been limited but good as long as I keep them in full sun with a little air circulation. I do not spray and haven't had any real problems with black spot.

I am ordering several DA roses this spring. Some will be on fort. rootstock but some won't. I will keep the ones that aren't, in pots.
I am encouraged to hear yours are doing well.
I also ordered several other (non DA roses).

How is your Jude the Obscure rose doing in a pot? Does it flower a lot and do the flowers open all the way in our humidity? I am dying to try this one for its legendary fragrance and beautiful blooms!

My Jude is going on it's 3rd year in the pot and it did glorious the first two years. I did have my husband move the pots to late day shade later in the hottest part of the year. They loved the alfalfa I used on them in July I think too.

It bloomed very well but not really totally loaded the way I have seen them. The roses are AMAZINGLY beautiful and scent is strong. My Abraham Darby is in the ground and fantastic but I've read it does well in a pot as well.

I am wanting to get a few in the ground this year because I've read it can take a couple of years for them to really get established and bloom well (the D.A.).

I don't think you can go wrong with pots for at least a couple of years. But that is as much experience as I have so far!

Daisy, glad to hear your Jude has done so well in a pot. I am also getting Pat Austin which I know can do well in a pot but will need afternoon shade. I have tons of other plants (mostly tropicals) that have done well long term in pots. I keep them in the gh in the winter.
I got a hand truck to move pots around and also use it for hauling bags of potting soil and other stuff. Harbor Freight usually has good deals on them. I have chickens and bunnies for compost and do a little vermicomposting as well. The plants love it.

I guess we will have to be 'partners in crime' in growing the Austins here in FL :D Please post pics of yours on this thread when you get them blooming again. I will also post mine if I get some blooms this year!

Hi juneroses, It will depend on how you want to grow them on which source you should order from. If you want to just keep them in pots you could try own rootstock or grafted to non-fortuniana root stock varieties.
If you plan to keep them in the ground long term and have nematodes then you may want to get them grafted onto fortuniana root stock. You can research more on this on the florida and rose forums and decide how you want to proceed.

There are lots of different sources for DA roses besides just the DA website. There are a few places that do graft the DA roses onto fortuniana root stock. Two of them are K&M Roses and Cool Roses.

For own root stock DA roses at lower prices that are usually smaller plants than the bare root roses and come in small pots. There is Chamblees Roses Nursery.
Roses Unlimited also has them. If you do a google search you can find more.

David Austin website also has own root and grafted onto non fort. root stock that are sold as bare root larger plants. If you sign up for a mail catalog from them they may send you a coupon code to use on your order.

Finally some DA roses do better in the heat than others. I did some research on the rose forums to see which would probably work for me. I don't mind experimenting a little either lol.
Usually the ones that stay smaller are better for pots but obviously a lot of people are growing the larger ones in pots and they are doing okay. If you keep them trimmed and can get it out to replenish the potting soil every few years they can do well.

I haven't tried them in pots but did plant them in the ground. Nelson's roses from Apopka Fla are on the fortuniana root stock and do well down here. I planted a Belinda's Dream from them over ten years ago. No black spot, no spraying and it just keeps blooming away. Some garden centers carry their roses.

I've got one of the Nelson ones in a pot though I think a main root has grown out of the bottom.. I've had it 2 years and it blooms almost continuously. It has a great scent! I don't use any spray ans feed with orchid fertilizer. I can't remember the variety, but I know it had peace in the name.
