Your Favorite Pink David Austin Roses
Comments (53)I plan to put Wildeve next to a fence - so if it does get long canes I will have something to attach it to. Jay [that's my son's name too!], glad to hear you like this rose - got it at an excellent discount for $5 in a big pot - it now has lots of buds. I have quite a few pink Austins - many are young so I haven't been able to evaluate yet. Am thinking I need to get Queen of Sweden, heard lots of good reports on it. England's Rose started out great last year, covered in blooms. Maybe I should have pinched them - the bush is still alive but not very vigorous - not going to let it bloom until/unless it recovers and starts growing. Love my James Galway - strong, upright bush that has a beautiful spring display then always has some blooms on it. Just got Sharifa Asma - covered in buds. I have a very old Mary Rose that does well. Love Tess of the d'Ubervilles - its on a huge fan trellis that it covers - it now has loads of big buds. Like Lady of Megginch - think I need to fertilize it more - when it blooms, you can see them all over the yard. Also have a large Scepter d'Isle that I like a lot - soft pink blooms, healthy bush, reliable rebloom. Charles Rennie Macintosh is another favorite - almost a lilac pink. I would like to see a stronger bush, but maybe its time for it to "leap" - it will be 3 yrs. old this year. That Alnwick rose is beautiful, Sylvia! Judith...See Moreyour favorite Austin rose?
Comments (36)All my favorites are being listed here, and for those of us who are DA rose lovers I really don't think I have a favorite. I currently have; Abraham Darby, Golden Celebration, Queen of Sweden, Heathcliff, Glamis Castle, Lady of Shallott, and Munstead Wood. Out of that group, five of them are show-stopping stunners: Abraham Darby- HUGE blooms- pink/apricot in color, and very fragrant, Golden Celebration- Again- HUGE blooms, deep golden yellow, that morphs into a creamy yellow. The fragrance of GC is incredible! If you have a bouquet in your house, you will smell it from yards away! Next I would go with Lady of Shallott. The color is a vibrant apricot color- that is hard to describe, but it's a prolific grower, and you will get many blooms, and it's diseases resistant too! One rose that hasn't been mentioned here is "Heathcliff." His blooms are HUGE! He is an upright rose, and very disease resistant. His color is a deep magenta/fuchsia color. His fragrance is unique and not overpowering. Next I would go to Munstead Wood. Everything people say about this rose is absolutely true! The color is stunning! It runs a deep garnet-purple color, and is absolutely stunning! Truth be told- you cannot go wrong with buying a DA Rose. It is worth every single penny you invest, and it will last you for years and years. I have been growing them now for about 15 years, and I HAVE to get a new one each year! LOL...See MoreHow do you like your David Austin Roses?
Comments (7)Temecula gets pretty hot, so I would suggest afternoon shade if you can manage it. 6 hrs of sun would be plenty. Sun all morning followed by shade after 1 or 2 in the afternoon would be good. Afternoon shade would help preserve the color and the flowers wouldn't toast so badly in the heat of summer. There are big Austins (8'+) and smaller, more manageable ones, 5' or so. Try the smaller ones first. One major thing about Austins that is different than HTs is that a lot of them tend to be very floppy the first year or so. You get a lot of flowers face down in the mulch at first. That improves after a year or two. Also you may not get a lot of flowers the first year. That usually improves a lot as well. Good ones here in inland Orange County have been Tamora, Molineux, William Shakespeare 2000, Sophy's Rose, Ambridge Rose, Abe Darby, Jubilee Celebration, Perdita, Emmanuel, Fair Bianca, Glamis Castle, Prospero. If you just get one, I would try 'Jubilee Celebration'. It's a wonderful rose, great rebloom from the start, compact growth. It's a more compact version of Abe Darby in a lot of ways....See Morewhat's your favorite David Austin / English rose?
