Pruning/Training Workshop Event

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Florida Southern College, with the Central Florida Heritage Rose Society and the Heritage Rose Foundation, will be holding a FREE rose pruning/training workshop in the FSC campus rose gardens the weekend of January 31/February 1, with HRF President (and designer of Ruth's Rose Garden) Stephen Scanniello. If you're really feeling energetic, some of us will probably get started Friday afternoon. The main workshop will be Saturday (all day), with lunch on your own (the college cafeteria would be a good choice). Then Sunday afternoon, 2:30, Stephen will be speaking at the monthly CFHRS meeting. On Monday, leftover pruning will continue, with horticulture students. Yes, this is a shameless plug for volunteer labor to get the garden pruned, but it's also a great opportunity to get some tips on how to prune and train the various classes of heritage roses correctly. While an RSVP is not strictly necessary, it would be helpful to have some idea of who all might be coming, so it would be appreciated. Also, bring your own pruners and work gloves if possible; we'll have a few extra pairs, but not many.

We'll have Stephen's book A Rose by Any Name available, and he will be happy to sign it or any others of his books you may have. Y'all Come!

Did he buy 'Climbing Golden Glow', or the bush form (just called 'Golden Glow')? In either event, newly planted roses DO NOT need to be pruned, or trained - just leave it alone. It is busy growing new roots. This takes a while. Make sure it does not go without water very long. You can deadhead the old blooms of you want. (That means just cut off the dead flower or developing hip where the flower was - no more). This will encourage it to bloom more. If it is the Cl Golden Glow, eventually (in a year or two) it will start to put out large long new climbing canes. They will get very long very fast. That is when you can start to train it. Let the new climbing canes alone long enough so that they are not so soft that you will damage them. Then, when they are no longer soft, you can tie them gently to a support. The more horizontally you are able to tie them, the better. They will sprout new growth that will bloom all along their length. Good Luck! Jackie

Anita I am so sorry you thought no one carried! I bet like me they wanted it to stay on the top until closer to the event. I am so thankful that Mendocino commented on it and I hope some GW'ers make it As a side note, my 2015 resolution is to work on raising my FB friends awareness of old roses. It is easy to share a post with a comment. I am really enjoying the "Friends of Vintage Gardens" daily posts and am trying to share regularly. I know it takes time to do each one and I appreciate the work behind it. I also have shared the Sac and San Jose garden posts. Even though I can't attend I hope a friend local to them will get interested. I hope others do the same and as a group we can all work to raise awareness of Antique or Rare Roses

Japanese garden workshop and garden education tour in Minnesota

We will be in Minnesota from August 7 to 8 for a two-day event to help gardeners elevate and maintain the quality of their Japanese gardens all-year round in a way that is also sensitive to regional requirements. Just bringing this back to the top as a reminder -- the event is THIS Saturday (1/31). We hope many of you will be able to attend. If you're a total newby, come and learn how to prune and train your roses from some experts; if you're a seasoned rosarian, come and lend a hand in getting Ruth's Rose Garden into perfect condition for the spring growth flush. Contrary to the above blurb, we will likely NOT do any pruning on Friday, but Saturday and Monday, definitely.

On Sunday, Stephen will be talking about the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden of the New York Botanic Garden (where he is curator), and about the development of the New York Heritage Rose District and FSC's several years of student service-learning trips, as well as tentative plans for another project there, this spring.
