Suggestions on shrub used for barracade on top of retaining wall
Comments (15)i would put in a 6 foot wide mulch bed .. and tell the kids that they are NEVER TO WALK IN MY GARDEN BED ... besides.. use the back door/garage door/lower level door ..... quit tracking dirt in my new front door .... crikey.. how may times do i have to tell you that.. lol ... once you achieve that ... you can plant anything you want ... i would not want to put a boxwood.. actually anything.. that would require shearing once or three times a year.. blimey.. you cant work on one side .. there is a hole there ... as to a fast fix... two or three split rail fence posts ... and rails... 3 holes.. bammo.. done ... and when they rot off in 5 years or so ... get rid of them.. because by then.. the kids will be well trained... and your drunken friends will know how to get to the front door ... this is the entrance to your new castle ... dont go all cheapo and plant just anything to solve the problem ... [not that the split rail is a thing of beauty ... but it can be done in hours.. rather than waiting 3 years for shrubbery to accomplish the task ...] take the time to EVOLVE a landscape plan .. and plant accordingly ... but dont pick some fast growing POCarp ... simply to be done with it ... thx for the pic... it is nothing like i interpreted your words .... whats the green stuff.. grass seed mat or something ... i think you need to define a 5 year landscape plan ... to fully understand your options as to the question asked .. i hit preview already.. so i cant see your pic anymore .... is the wall concrete or block retaining wall ... consider if a plant will become a problem if block wall ... most wont.. but its an issue ... ken...See MoreA low retaining wall - suggestions
Comments (10)Actually, I think that wall looks great! But one more sedum - and my absolute favorite - would give it a real kick: Sedum rupestre 'Angelina'. That powerful chartreuse color all summer, that takes on burnished red tones in winter, is hard to ignore. Also a number of cascading herbs might work well in the mix: any of the many creeping thymes (my favorite is wooly thyme); prostrate forms of rosemary; or one of the small gold or purple basils. Comments (8)To echo points made by both NHBabs and Yardvaark it is certainly possible to be well over your required height with a natural stone wall. As NHBabs mentioned it might be better to search out a landscape contractor who specializes in wall work or natural stone. Backfilling behind the wall with an appropriate, free-draining gravel like CA-7 is important for the long-term stability. It's also important to have an appropriate compacted base below grade. Yardvaark also mentioned construction "(with pronounced batter)". That become a critical part of the process as you go higher and higher. Both walls below are from Wisconsin "snapped drywall'. The first two photos are in the bottom of a detention pond and exhibit the batter previously referenced. This wall has been in place for seventeen years if memory serves. It's about 6' tall at its highest point. As a point of information we bridged the concrete channel in photo #2 with 3/8" plate steel. The second wall in front of the home has been in place for over twenty years and is not quite 4' tall at its highest point. Both walls are stable and aging nicely. Based on the vintage of your home any natural stone wall construction would be more in keeping with the style than a more modern, modular wall. Best of luck with your project....See MoreRetaining Wall and Shared Fence Hot Mess. Suggestions Please!
Comments (6)Thanks, everyone! Sorry it took me so long to get here today but I wasn't receiving any notifications so I didn't think anyone had responded. And thank you Stiley for the very kind words about my yard. That makes my heart happy because it's been a long-term project to get to this point. Thank you. <3 So, building the fence on top of a retaining wall is a non-starter, unfortunately. That was actually my first inclination and what I would have probably done it if others weren't involved. It's a bit complicated to go into here, but at this point, it looks like the retaining wall has to stay on my side of the property line. Someone suggested giving up the dead space and moving it my way and that's also something I actually considered, but I really don't want to lose any space (even if non-functional). All of the neighbor fences intersect, so I think it would also look strange, but mostly it's just the idea of giving up land. I know that probably sounds kind of silly, but I grew up on acreage with horses and living on a postage stamp with neighbors that close now is bad enough! ha ;-) The idea of giving it up just...I can't. :-0 Do you think a concrete or stone retaining wall could be built next to the fence on my side with less of a gap? Or are there other materials I should be thinking about? I love the grate idea if I do get stuck with the big gap, I would just have to find one small enough that little dog feet wouldn't go through. ;-) And the shorter bull wire fence is a great idea, too. Thank you! I didn't even know what it was called and now I do so that's very helpful! And much better looking than the temporary chicken wire currently residing there! This place is so great for helpful ideas and I'm so thankful to be able to come here and ask. I'm going to hit y'all up for ideas on my patio, next, because that's happening after I get this retaining wall figured out. Thank you again so much! Kimberly...See More- 9 years ago
