Sunflowers Concerns: Current pot sizes and future home, the lawn

I started my first sunflower last August with seeds in a paper cup that thrived pretty well and I changed the pots 2 times (I have documented this in my plant journal). A couple of weeks ago I started new seeds in the paper towel method and moved them to paper cups. But after watching many Youtube videos I have a concern for their initial development as I not only used smaller paper cups compared to what I saw in the videos, but I also planted the seeds from the paper towel with not much soil as evident in my journals and the photo. My goal is to transfer all 14 of these to the lawn outside (photo attached) without any re-potting in between but directly from these paper cups after they grow a little more to be able to withstand the transplantation shock and pests.

I don't want to invest much into 14 of larger pots as currently my only options would be cutting plastic water bottles half way through and moving the seedlings from the paper cups to those OR, collecting more paper cups (perhaps a bit larger in size) and transplanting the seedlings with enough soil so the soil is just a little more than half an inch below and rim of the cup. Also, I have not created any drain holes as I did the first time I grew sunflowers, the reason being nutrients drainage and the reason that paper cups get soggy if the outer wax is cut and the drain holes end up closing anyways and the sogginess have attracted white paper bugs. Further more I am prone to use paper cups as it is easier to cut them on the side with scissors making removing the plant with soil easier. Any suggestions on re-potting would be great which Is my primary concern at the moment.

Moving on to the lawn, as I said my plan is to plant these sunflowers in the lawn but there seems to be grass outside which is not any special kind just weed. My plan is to divide the lawn into two lengthier halves and so there is walking space on the left side and sunflowers on the right in 7 rows, next to the boundary wall. I read that sunflowers plant when matured enough can out-compete the grass for nutrients however I have sprinkled some old sunflower seeds cut in half to prevent germination, but for the purpose that I read about online that sunflower seed shells are toxic to grass. Am I good to go ahead and replant in my lawn in the coming weeks?

IMHE, sunflowers do not do as well when transplanted. They send down a deep tap root that does not like to be disturbed. I have found that each time they are transplanted or potted up it stunts growth. They are best sowed where they are intended to grow. I am not saying they will not grow it is just that the plants do not get as big as those sown where they are to grow.

I have not heard about the shells being toxic to grass but the roots supposedly have an allelochemical that can inhibit growth of some plants. What it would do to grass I could not comment on. These allelochemicals are said to be able to remain in the soil for several years. So if the shells or other parts of the plant also contain the same allelopaths you may have to wait several years for them to disappear.

Good luck and would love to see a picture when they are growing.

SCG, sunflowers are allelopathic but the hulls and seeds pack the most wallop, I think. Allopathic chemicals don't linger very long in the soil, once the offending plants or parts have been removed. All in all, the whole plant can cause problems for SOME plants. Some, including assorted species of grasses, show no effect whatsoever.

Invisi, I cannot imagine the success of growing a plant in a paper cup! How do you intend to water it properly? If you decide to go with something sturdier, I strongly urge you to poke a few holes in the bottom. You WANT the excess water to drain through.

But, I would follow SCG's good advice and sow the seeds directly into the soil where you want them to grow. I'm always pulling sunflower seedlings up from under the bird feeders!

Stew pot is actually closer, Linda. The style we currently call "Dutch oven" is a flat-bottomed kettle with a lid added. And is, of course, with its heavy, heat-holding design, ideal for stewing. Kettles originally were round bottomed (and some had legs), designed primarily to be hung over an open fire; either from a tripod or a crane. They did not have lids. There was a point, measured in gallons, where a kettle became a cauldren, but I misremember it right now. Thirteen comes to mind, but don't take that to the bank. Dutch ovens, of course, had three legs and a deeply recessed lid so you could put coals both under and on top, to provide even, dry heat. They were used on the hearth, not in the firebox. In the first quarter of the 19th century, "portable" cast iron stoves became popular. Initially kettles were still used by removing an eye and setting the pot right in the hole, over the open fire. Eventually they began modifying the pieces, flattening the bottom and adding a domed lid. A chicken fryer has a somewhat different configuration; being relatively wide for it's height (for stability), and with sidewalls that slope more sharply than those of a skillet. Chicken fryers, too, have domed lids; many of which are of the self-basting type. Now, if you really want to know about hearth trivia, ask me nicely and I'll tell you were the term "hob nobbing" comes from.

Hi, Samantha. Before you water, it's a good idea to check to see what moisture levels are like below the surface. Use a 1/4 or 5/16" wood dowel (any hardware of home improvement store, sharpened at both ends in a pencil sharpener. You can get 2, 3, 4, from 1 - 48" dowel. Make sure at least 1 is long enough to reach the bottom of your largest pot. You can use a little science to help keep water retention at acceptable levels, more specifically you can use Newton's First Law of Motion, which states that a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an external force, and a body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force. To apply the science, water your plant like you would if your soil allowed it w/o limitations to the plant. It doesn't, but pretend it does. When done watering, there will be a LOT of excess water left in the soil that has plenty of limiting potential. To negate that, pick the pot up by the rim, hold it over a sink, bathtub, lawn, ..... and move the plant smartly downward before sharply reversing the coarse to upward. When the direction changes from downward to upward, the excess water in the pot will continue moving downward and out the drain hole. You'll very quickly pick up the appropriate rhythm, and soon all excess water will have been removed. You can also tip your pots at about a 45* angle after watering and or add a drainage wick to a drain hole - preferably one through the bottom of the pot next to the sidewall. Compare picture B to picture A, and note the wick in picture E. These practices allow you to keep normally very water-retentive soils free of excess water and give the plant a fighting chance, free of the limitations imposed by soggy soils. You still have less aeration than you'd expect in media based on a high % of coarse material, but it's much better than suffering the limitations of a soggy soil with the same stoicism of a cow standing in a cold rain. ;-) I would do this the next time your tell (the wood dowel) says it's time to water. After flushing the soil, I'd add a recommended dose of appropriate fertilizer. 3:1:2 ratio fertilizers very closely mimic the ratio at which the plant actually USES the nutrients, and there are numerous reasons why mimicking the plants usage ratio is part of the best supplementation plan. Examples of 3:1:2 ratios are 12-4-8, 24-8-16, 9-3-6, ...... My preference is Foliage-Pro 9-3-6; this, for a number of reasons I wont list unless you're interested. If you don't understand the difference between NPK %s and NPK ratios, please ask for details. because it's an important part of your nutrient supplementation program. While it's true you needn't worry about potting soils or repotting in the immediate, these chores should be part of your regular maintenance program and something you formulate a plan around. If you don't already have a plan in place and want to have one, ask, and I'll offer some guidance that takes the plants natural rhythms into consideration. In consideration of the plant's well being, it's better to work in harmony with the plant's natural rhythms than against them. Standard doors are 6" - are you suggesting not to upgrade to 8" ? We felt higher the door height, the easier it is to move furniture and stuff, of-course the width of the door isn't changing. I wouldn't bother with this. How often do you move "furniture and stuff" that's taller than 7'? Extended Lanai: Oh, I thought it'd be a deeper lanai ... I'd be less inclined to pay for a wider lanai. Wider isn't all that useful, and it means more rooms are shaded /have less natural light. Vent Hood/Microwave to Outside - If we don't choose, the smoke will stay indoors - the builder should have included this in the base price but it is what it is. I am really surprised that this isn't standard. I would do the oak riser steps instead of carpet. Yes overpriced but probably better now. Yes, if you don't do the oak risers now, you probably won't be able to do them later ... at all. If they do carpet stairs, they're going to use plywood /paint quality stuff under that carpet; thus, it won't be a matter of pulling up carpet later and staining /painting. It is easy to say walk away and build a custom home, but not everyone can afford to do that, nor does everyone want to go that route (even if they can afford to). True. Tara we all have to make compromises. For ourselves it's been a 2 year journey building our custom home, plus the hours and hours spent researching and finding even the smallest details. So I understand where you're coming from. Yup, no matter your circumstances, you're going to "give" somewhere. For us, we're taking the same route as CP describes above: The place where we're "giving" is time and personal effort.

@rmaccrea We can actually already do something like a door opening for a specific delivery driver. IIRC some even inexpensive security systems and/or door locks have that feature. For me, the infrastructure adjustments are more vital to our personal spaces (e.g. in our homes) as well as to national interests in reducing infection spread. It seems as though even with new construction, the overall emphasis is on features and doodads like gas stove size and all that's required to make that happen (e.g. extra money spent on air quality and draft) rather than things like pipes and wires and whole-home air adjusters. Much as they're handy for sociability, features like peninsulas and islands where several people sit cheek-by-jowl in the kitchen breathing onto the food food prep area should become quite quickly a thing of the past. This is what I mean by an infrastructure feature that might be helpful: What might be useful is to have the exterior doors of the home set up so that a CERV kind of thing sanitizes the person right before they come in the door or in a foyer/enclosed porch/ante room. A kind of air wash. This would simply be a feature of a whole-home system. As you leave the home, you should be able to push a button that gives the home a "cleanser boost" while you're out. I can do this with my CERV right now (if there's an undue stink from the bathroom, I can boost the CERV for 30 seconds and it clears right out), but it would be handy to have it do a more thorough cleansing while I go get the groceries. The other thing I can see happening is more minimalism in internal architecture and an emphasis on construction materials for impervious surfaces. It would be way easier to keep the house clean.... The closed air in a bathroom will need to get re-thought. Bathrooms are small confined spaces that can get heavy usage. Right now, most people have fairly simple fans that are decades-old technology, and some people are putting in enclosed booths for the toilet. This seems like a recipe for germ-y air. These booths, while cozy, always seem to emanate someone else-s aroma (These were around when I was a child, so I've had a lot of experience!). IMO a toilet booth should not be built in a home where the homeowner's priority is to minimize contagion. So, I guess, @rmaccrea my most important message would be "What do prospective homeowners want to accomplish overall?" and not specifically in one spot or another. The whole house should come from a place of addressing their objectives, from the ground up, architecture, construction materials, overall philosophy. That's an infrastructure thing, and in a world where we need safer and cleaner interior spaces requires a conceptual shift, attitude, a different paradigm altogether.

Gentlemen, thank you for you responses but please do look at the photos of my first sunflower here https://www.plantvillage.com/gardens/82?locale=en . I sprouted them in the same paper cup, transplanted two times and I was more worried than happy they didn't grow any taller, at least being a first timer. I believe I can improvise a little differently following what I learnt from previous time but needed a few tips so as to take care of anything that might come in the way of successful sunflowers in the end.

As for how I water them, I observed pretty well from last time how much I need to water. I have been using spray gun and have been carefully watering each paper cup and only letting the sun evaporate the water. I have used a mixture of sand and manure and I have observed that sand tends to dry off faster than manure so I am also carefully not to let the seedlings have to push through hard soil. I would say they are thriving pretty well in the paper cups just concerned if I should give them sort of a bridge or a buffer of larger containers in between before finally moving them out to the lawn.

rhizo_1, Thanks for the info on the seeds and hulls. I am very careful where I plant sunflowers as I am unsure of how long the chemicals hang on.

Invis Transplanting sunflowers stunts (slows) growth dramatically, at least in my experience. A couple years ago I started several variety of sunflowers indoors 6 weeks prior to my planting out date. I planted these seedlings that were already about 30cm tall in the garden and about 30 cm away sowed a seed of the same variety. In 6 weeks ALL the plants from the seeds sown directly in the ground had outgrown the plants started in the ground. All the sunflowers that were started and transplanted ended up being about 2/3 the others size.

It is, again in my opinion, detrimental starting sunflowers in pots. I also believe each time you transplant them it has a negative impact on growth. IF I was to start them in pots again I would do so in large, deep pots so the tap root will not reach the bottom before you plant out. I would also be very careful when transplanting to ground to not disturb the roots in anyway.
