My library sale haul!

Visited our local Friends of the Library sale twice yesterday. We spent a total of $23 (including a $2 donation) and here's what we got:

11 John Grishm books (mostly hardback) for my hubby -- he only reads one author at a time, and is not a big fiction reader.

Rumpole Rests His Case - I've never read a Rumpole but there seem to be several fans here at RP

The First Eagle - Tony Hillerman (I've probably read it, couldn't remember)

Cousin Kate - Georgette Heyer

For One More Day - Mitch Albom - I enjoyed The Five People You Meet in Heaven

Merlin's Keep - Madeleine Brent - A reread from way back when

Song of the Axe - John R Dann - hoping for a Jean Auel type read, but unlikely.

Hi Sarah,
What a great trawl!!! Our local municipal library have a trolley up front as you walk in. They are always culling, at the moment the books are all 50cents aussie. The only one that caught my eye this trip was "Matthew Flinders' Cat" by Bryce Courteny, I am not a fan of Courteny's however it has a beautiful cat on the cover, so that sold it for me!!!

Isn't it terrific to score like that? I visit the library used book sale regularly and almost get something nice. My last pick was a picture book about cats and gardens - the cat on the cover is a dead ringer for mine.

As one of the'northern'collectors you refered to,it was good news to read that you and Michael K. are going to be able to expand the cryptanthus offerings. We on GW think highly of Michael and his operation,and order from him often. Additionally,as mentioned in earlier postings,I assist the Staff at the Buffalo Botanical Gardens with the bromeliad collection procurement and maintenance,and currently are preparing an order for him that will be quite extensive.These new broms will be used to establish an all new display in a soon to be completed 'Epiphyte House'remodeling.I will post a few photos,to give all my friends here an idea of the building size,an also some pics of the damage that occured around the property during the surprise early October snowstorm this week. The report is that 80% of our areas trees were badly damaged by the wet 18" snowfall and winds,as the leaves were still on them,and the weight was just too much. This freak storm was caused by a 40deg.difference in the Lake Erie water temp. and the freezing air temp.,resulting in just the perfect conditions to give us so much snow in just 12 hours.Ironically,after it passed,the temperatures were in the high 60's,and all the snow melted away. I am jealous!!! You got some great plants! I went to Green Fest in Tampa. It was nice but I didn't see many "unusual" plants. Don't get me wrong, I still got some plants but I was hoping to find some of the lesser known plants. It will be interesting to hear how the Leu garden sale was. I think next year I will skip green fest and try another plant sale.

Melati, I used to plant my separate eyes of the same hosta in separate pots, but then I got too many pots so I wound up combining them. That works only so far. Like, two were supposed to be alike, but it happened that the 2nd eye of Brother Stefan wasn't variegated, it was a solid green leaf and I did not mix up anything. So I thought I had a sport, it turned out to be I suppose a Tissue Culture Failure TCF. It is healthy, it is out of the same TC batch as my Bro Stefan (who I will no longer show as "BS" for reasons known to Jonny...hehehe). I don't actually know what to call that solid green. I might give it away to my two garden neighbors. I combined my pots of Gold Drop, which is a small, and boy are those growing a lot, and one half the pot bloomed early and the other half late....you'd think it was reblooming, but it is a different part of the pot which blooms separately. Hosta can be so interesting. I have one Powder Keg, and it is holding its streaks boldly so I know you will enjoy growing it.

Veer, the 'Red Barn' murder was the subject of a very early silent movie, so it must have been a familiar tale up until the early 1900s. Your Heyer anecdote made me laugh. It reminds me of a similar experience when I bought my very old paperback copy of Peyton Place at a book sale. The ladies taking my money twittered naughtily and one told me how when she was a girl she had to hide her copy in the garage so her mother would not catch her reading it. Alas, though a good (though not distinguished) cook I have yet to back a single loaf of bread. My sense of David's books is that they are filled with fascinating food history, even if some of the recipes are a bit esoteric for contemporary cooks. I have a battered copy of her fascinating slim book Spices, Salt and Aromatics in the English Kitchen. I love reading it, but it is not likely that I will be spicing and curing my own mutton in the foreseeable future.

Our library system does this twice a year, in April and October. This was a particularly fruitful year for some reason.

Sarah; What a wonderful and varied lot! I am fortunate in having several libraries nearby and a number of charity shops. They all have cheap books but I am so short of space in my one-bedroom and only one main room home. I have been picking up childrens books for the two ( three in May!) GGchildren. The books have to be checked for scribbles, toothmarks etc. but I have found some good as-new ones. The latest find was about a tooth fairy and had a little silk bag embedded in the cover for the first baby tooth that comes loose!

Nice haul, Sarah.

The libraries around here don't have library sales, but both the municipal library and the National Library have tables of free books, the former on a "take one, leave one" system. The main branch of the municipal library also has cull shelves where they sell off books they have culled. I recently picked up a book on Icelandic customs and traditions in past centuries that I am going to re-bind in some really gorgeous red leather. It's being re-issued after having been out of print for a couple of decades, but the bindings on new books are so terrible that I preferred to get this old and slightly worn copy and re-bind it.

Wow, Netla. How cool to do your own book-binding...

And congrats to Sarah on the finds. I would be interested in reading the Rumpole book as I have heard so much about this author and his character, but never actually read him. I was invited to see John Mortimer do a lecture, but as I had never heard of him, I declined. Now I rather regret doing that as he has died. However, his written words still continue.

When you go to the FoL book sales, do you go with a list of titles and stick to it? Or do you wander around and see what grabs your fancy?...

lemonhead -- I prefer to just wander around and see what grabs my attention. I went back the second time with my DH to look specifically for Grisham books, but managed to find some more that I was interested in. :-O

I just love my local library, especially the so sweet girls that run it, I live in a country town so we all know each other. I received a phone call from them yesterday to tell me that they are culling heaps of talking books, my husband is unable to read print, also lots of big print books for our little retirement village library. These girls are just so caring.

There was a huge FOL sale a week ago in my new adopted city. I finally got dizzy looking at all the tables of goodies. However,I managed to find 2 Xmas gift books for friends which were in mint condition, as well as some favorite movies, for a couple of bucks apiece. They even had antiquarian books for sale....
