Advice, please: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

This John Berendt non-fiction novel has been chosen as the next book for my reading group. I've just received it from the library and was dismayed to find that it is rather on the long side. It also looks to me like a fairly straight-forward story of actual Savannah society, which probably is not my cup of tea.

Could those of you who have read it please tell me whether you think it's a) worth reading, b) benefits from group discussion?

For group reading, I really prefer books which need discussion to be fully understood, or at least to get different angles and viewpoints. For example, the RP discussion of The Turn of the Screw was excellent because the story is open to several different interpretations.
