omg!!! theres a book forum on gardenweb!!!!

I had heard snippets that there was one, but never investigated until now. Someone on the Cottage Garden forum tipped me off, lol! I love to read! Love to get books! Ive mostly been on the gardening (another major hobby of mine) section here. But you shall be seeing alot of me around here from now on!

Quick breifing about myself:

Ive always liked to read, but have only lately started to read seriously. I was never really encouraged to read the Classics as a kid, but have since taken on reading them with great zeal. I was never trained to have an understanding deeper insight, metephores, philosopical straines of subject mater found in some books, but im trying, so please forgive me if anything I say in future posts is rather nieve or silly. Right now im sampling many of 'Masters' of literature. I have read all of Jane Austins novels, including the two she never finished. I feel that one cannot give an accurate opinion of an author until they have read all, or the majority, or their pieces. I do pepper my shelves with some modern literature too.

Welcome, CMK! Always fun to have another fan of books join the conversation.Congratulations on your desire to read the classics. I recall reading somewhere that Dorothy Sayers, when she was encouraged to read the Divine Comedy, was reluctant to do so. When she finally did read it she fell in love with it and said to someone, "Nobody told me it was a great story!" It is easy to forget that classics are classics, in part, because they are good stories.

welcome! I have found this to be a very gentle place...we speak our minds, but for the most part we are quite civil!

I would encourage you to go back through the 10 pages of threads and read some that take your fancy-we have had some discussions on the classics that you would probably enjoy a lot. And join in the game-the thread that starts with a roman numeral...each post needs to connect with the one previous-the trickier the connection the better!

Hey Ashley, I really like hearing your takes on situations too. You would be one of my top picks to be my stepmom ;) I realize I didnt make that sentence very clear. Many people I have known have either taken breaks from work, quit, took some time off to regroup etc. I've known many people who have used different ways of dealing with stress from divorce and have taken it out on work, mainly because divorce was so popular in my family lol. Also, I've seen just from observation (my field deals with a lot of people and travel, so I think I have a fairly balanced place to observe) where adults take mental "breaks" from work, can't function very well, get fired etc. There is usually something that "gives" when a couple divorces. A messier house, credit card ran up, lose your job. There are natural consequences of divorce on adults, my only point was that there are going to be natural consequences for children. If one or both divorced spouses have a hard time finding their footing after separate, chances are they aren't going to be quite that rock for their children. The chances are high than the child is not going to be able to function as well as before if this is the case. It is only natural that school will be something that could "give" in the childs life. It is one of the only things they can actually control. They can control how little or much effort they put forth and how much room they allow school into their head. If their head is too clouded with what is going on in their personal life, not much room for school. Just like parents and work.

Laurielou177: I did none of it -- my furniture guy did. It isn't one piece of maple -- but, you could probably use maple plywood and nose it to hide the edges. Contact me off-line ecliberman@cox.net -- I'll ask my furniture guy exactly what he did. I know that I asked him to make it so it could be easily disassembled, if I ever wanted to pick up the post for cleaning. The post is attached to the table by wooden cleats. I believe he cut away part of the top of the post to insert the piece of wood crosswise. The end that goes into the wall is supported by a two pieces of wood on the underside. One is screwed into the wall. Attached to that is a piece that is screwed into the underside of the table. In addition, there are three strips of wood going across the underside of the table to give the width of the table some support. The dimensions of the table top are 30.5 x 48. We had a tight space. Trestles are a good option, and look nice in an old house, but I thought they had to be stabilized by a stretcher at the bottom. I'm not sure I used the right furniture terms. As much as I obsessed about this, I'm already forgetting all the details. Email me if you really want to know.

Glad my monetary enticement is getting some KTers to check their member page. lol Mingo, K actually LOVES the food there. She says the fruit and vegetables are so fresh. They have dessert daily too. The girls get 1300 calories a day, the boys maybe 1600. She was stopping for a diet soda on her break everyday the first couple weeks cause she wanted something sweet... but she's quit that now. She was never a soda drinker. She doesn't complain about being hungry at all... but she does complain about the lack of sleep. lol

Mtn & her husband hosted such an enjoyable visit for us all! The lunch was delicious, the chance to meet and visit with fellow GW's was special & the beach house was even more spectacular in person than the photos. Still pinching myself to think how lucky to have joined this forum so many years ago not knowing that someday I would get to meet several GW's in person. Thank you Mtn, for your kindness, hospitality & friendship. Thank you to those that brought delicious treats. It was an unforgettable afternoon with delightful conversation. Welcome CMK! You'll find a lot of book lovers here and loads of reading suggestions. Watch out, though, your TBR (to be read) pile may start taking over your house!

Thanks everyone! Gee, I sounded like an over-enthused twelve year old, didnt I? Lol. None of my family or friends are really into books or literature, and ive been starved for someone to discuss these things with!

CMK-I am new here too and I recommend writing down the book titles that people on this forum are reading. I have been turned on to some very good picks. I have two lists going.One is for books that my library carries (easy to check on line) and one for the bookstore/Amazon.com lists.The second list I give to family and friends for birthday/Christmas ideas for me. My hubby loves it because he can just go and order books for me. I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do. Welcome.

Thank you very much blossomgirl (and everyone else)! Ive allready gotten a few more books on my list since comming here. I want to check out The Historian next... I have a hard time with borrowing books. I have a habit of getting a book but reading something else before it. It will often wait months on my shelves before I get around to reading it. So obviously not a great idea for me to get library books unless I am determined to read them right away! And any library books I do get just keep calling out to me "Tick Tock, Tick Tock, read me now or take me back!!).

We are a friendly bunch. Our love of books and reading brings us together as reading is such a solitary hobby. Here in RP, we can discuss and chat and ask questions. You mentioned being worried about sounding silly or naive, please do not. We are not literary scholars. We are bibliophiles. Plain and simple. What drew US here is exactly what drew YOU here. Glad to have you onboard.

You'll find that each of us has our favorite genres and are willing to try any book that sounds good be it classic, classic mystery, brand new fiction or non-fiction or anything in-between. My BEST advice would be to get a small notebook to keep next to the computer so you always have a handy spot to write down the titles and authors that grab you on this site. Otherwise, you'll have dozens of scraps of paper all over the place.

PAM - who signs in all caps because there are about three or four Pam's on this site.
