I have lined up some short, light reads from my TBR pile, mostly mysteries and a couple of short story collections. I'm translating a book on translation theory and will be writing my master's thesis over the summer, so I need light reads that will help me relax between my stints at the computer.

Authors include Patricia Wentworth, Georgette Heyer, M.M. Kaye, Charlaine Harris, Sharyn McCrumb, Mary Wesley and Roald Dahl.

We are off for a week in West Wales in about 10 days time. If it is sunny I shall sit on the beach and read Dissolution by C J Sanson which, I think Janalyn recommended, and An Air That Kills by Andrew Taylor. A 'local' writer who used the scenary of the area and formed the small local towns into a 'composite' for his first who-dunnit.
Have just picked up 1599 by James Shapiro from the bookshop. If it is wet (and judging by the rain, wind and cold we have had for the last 2 weeks I am packing my winter-woolies) I shall also be reading that in the small 'flat' we rent.

Martin, anyanka, dido and anyone else from the UK may recognise it as it has been featued in the 'Renault' car adverts spread across the pages of all the glossies, weekend supplements etc for several weeks.
On one side of the page is a Paris street scene with a parked Renault Clio and the other is an English street scene with the same car and 'our' book shop.

I have never understood the term 'beach reads'!
My reading doesn't change depending on the season or whether I am on holiay or not.

Some of my favorite authors have new books out and I have several on my request list at the library, so will be looking forward to books by Lee Childs, Janet Evanovich, Harlan Coben among others, plus I will continue the series by Alex Kava and Lisa Gardner.

I rarely plan too far ahead in my reading (I tend to read by mood, not by plan). Though I do have Lucy lined up (my father lent it to me and I'd like to get it back to him before too long), as well as several mysteries on my TBR pile and some fun YA fantasies. And who knows what else will get into my hands this summer. Next week is my only week off, and I'm planning on making the most of it with lots and lots of books.

I have three more Morland Dynasty books on hand before I have to order more.

I also tend to read by whim and mood, and with my TBR pile, who knows what will be read this summer? I do know I will read the new Stephanie Plum (if my number comes up at the library before September *G*) and I always manage at least one Georgette Heyer during vacation.

This thread's timing is perfect. I need to give this topic some thought. I am off to Cape May, New Jersey for a bit this summer. The clothes'll be easy to pack. Whatever ends up in the suitcase I'll wear without a care. But the books! Now they need some planning. Do I take fluff and fun? Do I take classics and hope for quiet time? Do I take mysteries and sleep with the windows shut? Do I take 'em all and try to figure it out when I get there?

The Stolen Child is the only book I've looked forward to reading in quite a while. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Anyone have any opinion as to if there is a "hot summer read" this summer? As in "The Historian" last summer? I haven't really heard any buzz about a particular book and sort of wonder if, thanks to the movie, "The DaVinci Code" is instead making a comeback. Our library ordered several more copies in anticipation and they are just sitting on the shelf.

I read an excerpt of a book about the Khmer Rouge and specifically the start of an interview with Grandfather Khan, a sadistic prison camp commander in Cambodia. While "Why Did They Kill? Cambodia in the Shadow of Genocide" by Alex Hinton does not sound like a fluffy summer beach book, it is on my TBR. Since I'm not much of a planner, it is actually the only one on my TBR so far.

Bumblebeez, I saw the Newsweek review this week on The Stolen Child and promptly ordered it from the library. They hadn't ordered it from their book source and had no plans to do so until I requested it, so I'm guaranteed to be first on the list when it arrives. I'm looking forward to it.

I don't plan that far ahead; I usually read on a whim. I do know that I plan to find "Black Swan Green", as from the reviews it sounds like the sort of work I enjoy.
