So far this month I have added chopped up banana, eucalyptus and elephant ear leaves. I also added cut up palm fronds and unused leaf mould I didn't use this year.

Scored a large bag of shredded paper from the school where I teach - it will last for weeks as a brown layer over all of the kitchen stuff.

Ah September; the start of the busy compost season. Ya gotta love it.
In the worm bins; all the melons and squash that did not make
the grade. Ucg and a few fruit peels and cores. Corrugated cardboard.
In the trench; I went fishing and caught a meal of pan fish. I had some chicken bones with them.
In the pile; Late corn plants no ears. Zucchini plant done producing. All the melon vines. tops and trims from leek harvest. A few bills and papers for carbon as we are still a few weeks from leaves. of course kitchen scraps. I am at zero landfill on compost/kitchen material and will need to import carbons

Yesterday I got:

the wilted flowers our receptionist's husband sent her for their anniversary
lots of office paper to shred
tea bags & coffee grounds & filters
wilted lettuce, smooshy cherry tomatoes, dry baby carrots, broccoli, & cauliflower (leftovers from a luncheon)

It's canning season. I've been throwing the peach pits under the pine trees, but the peach skins go into the compost pile.

I have been pouring the left-over liquids from canning, cooking, anything that has juice, or sugar water, or other dissolved organic by-products, onto both the compost pile and onto the fallow garden beds. (Drink up, my hearty microherd.)

At this time of the year, the recycled beer either goes onto the compost pile or straight onto the lawn.

- Awaiting the leaves. This year, some of the leaves are going straight onto the garden beds for mulch. But I have to reserve some leaves (browns) to balance out a compost pile that has become very 'green'-filled over the summer.

idaho gardener, I too use leaves for mulch, both in the garden & on the poor things that live in pots.

In past years, when I started with Play-Doh soil, exhausted from a hundred years of cotton & cows, I spread bags of leaves all over the place all autumn & winter, just to get a little organic matter going.

(& you might be a compost wacko if you say things like "Drink up, my hearty microherd"!)

Sylvia, how is your soil now? I'll bet it just soaks up OM in that Texas heat.

And I'm in transition from a compost wacko to a mulch wacko. As Ruth says, it's easier and the end result is the same.

During the winter - spring and summer months the leaves do not exist, (of course). What I do to keep the browns coming is to talk to people in the area who have cows and horses and rescue any spoiled hay and straw bales they may have. It's what keep me going in the off season.

but it's so much better than it was!

Since my freezer decided to go out on me, I started a new pile with: thawed "frozen" vegetables, shredded paper, alfalfa pellets, torn up cardboard, coffee grounds and filters, 1/2 bottle of old wine, cut-up annual stems, shredded leaves, green tomatoes with holes, eggplant peelings, used tissue, over-the-hill peaches, plum peelings, non-greasy paper towels, with half-finished compost interspersed throughout.

Did you know that if you leave your watermelon rinds in the covered bucket on the back deck for 3 weeks you get about 2 inches of the foulest smelling liquid you can imagine ???

The herd loved it I'm sure --- cleanup is not so good though.....
