Made a "green soup" that is supposed to ease gall bladder discomfort. It served me well for a few days as it was the only thing I could eat without being in pain. However, its not my favorite and probably too old. So my compost bin is getting the rest of the pot of this green slime!! LOL

Some old Bonsai fertilizer I found in the potting shed - I got some of it on my hands and smelled it all day! What the heck is that stuff?

I scored a big batch of spent brewery grains today. Some went into the compost pile but mostly it was used as mulch mixed in with the top layer of straw mulch.

The last of the nasturtium vines, weeds, spider plants, unknown plant from my son's yard ... with orange 'berries', bucket of UCG filters that have been 'ripening' in water for 2 weeks. 5 gal of UCG, topped with 1 bag of steer manure and the remains of a worm bin.[probably 200 worms] This will top the pile off 'till ready to harvest. Starting a new pile with very dry wild mustard, grass clippings, Eucalyptus leaves.

Started a new pile yesterday starting with fresh tree/bush trimmings from the city pile. Mixed in a dozen or so lettuce plants that had bolted, some pea vines, a bit from the older pile and the usual kitchen scraps. I didn't do a temperature check today but it was indeed hot.

Still working on the mostly fresh wood chip pile. I lined bin #2 with cardboard and then turned the pile into that. It really dried out alot during the first week so hopefully the cardboard around the sides and also the top covered with newspaper and bricks will keep it moist for a while.

There was definitely plenty of fungal activity going on before the first turning.

It's time to find some greens to add.

~200 lbs of steaked-out shark meat and a cubic yard of ramial wood chips. Let's hope for no stinkies.

I was interested to read your comment about the brewery grain as I might have access to a limitless supply. I assume this is a brown? It would be great if it is. I have a hard time coming up with a lot of browns.

I have found it to be a rather potent green. It will definitely add heat to a pile. My piles are usually 4'x4'x4' I wouldn't add more than about 10-15 gallons within a months time. I might that mistake last year. Phew what a stench for about a week. It was the only time I knowingly had raccoons in my yard. I guess there were just investigating. I wound up spreading that whole pile out as mulch for about a month then raked it back together as I could.

Besides the usual kitchen scraps, my compost is beginning to collect the output of my garden and yard. Up 'till now, I'd been putting the grass clippings on the garden beds as mulch.
Now, I'm building a compost pile for next fall.

Several bushels of apples that fall from the trees.
Expired potato plants.
Bolted lettuce.
Grass clippings.

Next month I'll pull the chipper over to the blue pine trees and grind up some 'browns' (pine straw) to add to all those greens.

-2 buckets of ground wood mixed with dirt from stump I had removed
