Happy New Year
Comments (19)Happy New Year, We also had the traditional pork and sauerkraut New Year's Day dinner. It is said to bring good luck and prosperity. For the third year in a row, I am going to try to weed out some of the books that I've read, but never intend to re-read... mostly trade paperbacks. Here's the catch... my copy of Pere Goriot, which I am reading right now, is one such paperback that is yellowing and the glue is starting to dissolve but I know I can get one more read out of it! Also, like many of you, I would like to tackle the TBR stacks around here. I truly love love love books but even I must admit that it is getting a wee bit out of hand. As for the ten pounds, alas, I cannot take part. I turned 40 last February and made a solemn vow that never again would I be worried about NUMBERS... my weight, my size of jeans. I am, for those wondering, not rail thin, but neither am I carrying too much extra. I could probably drop ten and look great, but I won't do it. I have no clue as to weight because I absolutely have not stepped on a scale since my birthday. I vowed, instead, to concentrate on healthy eating habits. But I wish you all best of luck in your endeavor. As for me, I'll join you in your salads and carrot sticks, but I absolulely refuse to give up my favorites like french fries with gravy and chocolate - everything in moderation. And since making this vow, my jeans have not gotten tighter, they've actually begun to get loose. Don't know if I lost anything - I won't get on the scale. Comments (27)Lemonhead, thanks for the inspiration. Ever since I read your original post I had been thinking about doing something about my books and this weekend I finally went ahead. I emptied all three bookcases that had been in my bedroom for years, dusted all the books, dragged the bookcases into my living room and set them up in there. There was an unbelievable amount of dust in, on, under and behind the bookcases. I rousted and swept up a colony of feral dust bunnies, but I think some of them escaped under the bed and will need to be coaxed out. My bedroom already feels bigger, and when I have finished cleaning everything I expect to sleep a little easier. It can't be healthy to sleep with all that dust around! I also hope the air in there will be less dry with all the paper gone. The living room has taken on the feel of a small, cosy library and some time this week I am going to a friend's house to pick up a comfy sofa she has given me (white sofa + kids = not a good idea). I plan to make a reading nook with it facing the bookcases, a reading lamp and small table to put stray books on. By moving the books into the living room I am going back to an old Icelandic tradition that has been losing its footing in last couple of decades or so: To proudly display the family books in the living room for all to see and browse. The only difference is that I'm not just displaying my gilded fine leather and imitation leather bindings of serious capital-L-Literature, but also my tatty old paperbacks, notebooks and travel journals. Even the cookbooks are now in the living room....See Morefellow insomniacs
Comments (24)Like Vee's computer, mine shows Eastern US time and I often just deduct 5 hours (6 hours in winter) to think of what you're doing - where you're likely to be. I like to look at RP earlyish in the morning because many postings were made when I was asleep (Well, not always asleep because I've got a heavy 'twitcher' for a partner so I've taken to sleeping around - the house, that is, of course - a bit like Goldilocks!). I haven't got Broadband (don't all look horrified at once. I haven't got one of those cameras, either, or an i-pod) so I have to do a callup every time I want to check stuff but I don't mind. I'm late this morning - it's 09.55 here; but when I post this it'll say something different up top....See MoreRosefolly
