Were the Glyphs forums offline Friday night?

I tried to reach both RP and the movie forum last night (March 3rd) but got a mysterious message about them being unavailable. I actually thought that perhaps they had been taken offline. Then I thought that it might be related to the problems mentioned at the top of the page. Does anyone know?

Relieved to find all okay now, but still curious,

When I couldn't open up RP the other day, and then had trouble with my library's site, I thought it was my computer connection. I went on "live chat" with my ISP for almost *one hour*. They were no help and I finally decided it was an RP problem. Just had to wait it out.

I only just got back on RP a few minutes ago. My last post was Friday afternoon on the Brideshead thread. I checked back later and it kept saying I was not "authorized" to be viewing it and that I was "forbidden" to enter. Gee, was it something I said? I later saw on some of the garden forums I frequent that they were having problems with the Glyphs and NatureNet forums. Thankfully nothing was lost.

Jay, Yesterday afternoon was just plain miserable and there's no other way to describe it. The Heat Advisory was for the counties to our immediate west and Love County was not a part of it because our heat index was expected to reach 104. By shortly after 2 p.m., the heat index at our OK Mesonet station at Burneyville was 109. (The rains in eastern OK sent us humidity even though we got no rain from them) Even though our air conditioning system works just fine and keeps us cool most of the time, yesterday it felt like it wasn't on and wasn't working. (It was on and was working, but it still felt miserable.) Although all the rain storms stayed just east of us, their outflow boundaries late in the afternoon brought us a sudden rushing wind with gusts into the upper 20s and the rain-cooled air that those winds brought us dropped us from actual temps in the mid-90s to the lower 80s in just a couple of minutes. Our heat index dropped from the 104-109 range to the upper 80s. It was heavenly, and it came just at the time that we were thinking we couldn't stand the heat another single minute. Our humidity is high this year because our rainfall has been high and it sort of (but not quite) makes me wish for a drought year, because I like the much lower humidities we have in drought years. The people across the street from us are having their home added on to/remodeled and the construction crew there starts around 6 a.m. and works until about 2 p.m., which I think is wise given our afternoon high temps. Still, they are out there working in miserable morning heat index numbers. Most days, our temps hit the lower 90s by 10 a.m. and the heat index breaks 100 about 10 a.m. I am usually in the garden from about 6 a.m. to about 9 or 10 a.m. and then back out about 6 p.m. until dark, although sometimes I have to come in and take a break during those 'cooler' times also. I have learned to pace myself too, because it isn't worth making oneself sick out there. I know it is annoying to come into the house soaking wet, which is a daily occurrence lately, but being soaking wet does mean we are staying well-hydrated, and that is so very important. Some days it seems like I spend more time drinking Gatorade, water and tea than I do working, but I couldn't work outside without drinking them. I don't know that I have learned from "maturity" (although I am old enough that I should have) to pace myself and come inside and to not push so hard in the heat. I HAVE learned it through "stupidity" though. If you stay out too long in the heat without drinking enough and getting in the shade to cool off, you'll make yourself sick. I've done it once or twice before, and I won't do it again. It actually happened to me a a large grassfire along I-35 in the summer of 2006 where I was so busy taking care of the firefighters that I didn't take care of myself, and felt myself getting ill. I promptly sat down in the shade and drank a full bottle of Gatorade and a full bottle of water, but I still felt sick for a couple of days thereafter. When I am in the garden and I start feeling a headache, nausea, lightheadedness, etc., coming on, I immediately head inside because I don't want to get heat exhaustion or, even worse, heat stroke. This is the worst combination of heat/high humidity we've had here in Love County in several years. I noticed last week that three water systems in Love County were having mechanical issues (Leon, Marietta, and Southern OK Water Corp) and it is too early in the summer for that. Our red clay shifts/cracks when it goes from wet to dry and often the water pipes can't handle very much of that. It looks like a long, hot summer for our end of the state. Game bird, I know the rain is annoying when it comes day after day, but trust me when I tell you it is more annoying when the rain doesn't come. Last year we had only a half-inch in July and you couldn't water the gardens enough to keep them thriving. The watermelon ought to be able to handle the rainfall pretty well this early in the season. The only time I think rain bothers melons is if it falls when they are nearing maturity and then it can contribute to white heart. Send the rain to Jay in SW Kansas or to me here in southern OK and we'll be happy to have it. I do hope it stops falling there before the combination of heat/humidity/moisture start causing fungal dieseases like powdery mildew. Dawn

Barker_Tx, we are in Austin, Tx and if you have any suggestions, please email me at bevangel_72(at)yahoo.com. A big problem we're having is the cost of all the facilities in Austin. MIL gets about $1100/mo social security and about $900/mo investment income. All of her money is invested in CDs however and none of those mature until next March, so even though know she needs to start spending down the principal, we'd very much like to wait to cash one out to avoid the early withdrawal penalties. In the interim, DH and I are supplementing her living expenses. But, both our jobs are currently "shaky" so we really can't afford to supplement more than about $1000/mo and even that is a MAJOR stretch. If either of us actually loses our jobs, we're going to eat through our own financial cushion very very fast! In Amarillo, MIL's social security and investment income came really close to covering her expenses and she would cash out a CD about once a year to put enough in the bank to cover the rest of her expenses for the year. The only thing we were supplementing was her medication management at about $400/mo. Moving her down here and paying the $3000 non-refundable move-in fee to the Meridian ate thru pretty much all the extra cash she had on hand. So, until next March, we're going to have to supplement every penny above about $2000/mo that it costs her to live. As for the Meridian... I have talked to the administrators until I am blue in the face. They just keep shifting their stories to cover their a**es. First they claimed that they intended for another resident who attends almost all the activities in the main area to go and get MIL and befriend her... but that that resident moved out shortly after MIL moved in. When I pointed out that 1) they never TOLD us the volunteer resident had moved out and 2) THEY were the ones who made the promise and, if they couldn't find a volunteer to fulfill the promise, they should have assigned a staff member to do it, they changed their story. They NOW claim that the only activities they EVER promised to take MIL to were the ones in the Platinum Plus wing and that, if we understood anything else, it was just a misunderstanding on our part! They won't respond to the fact that we talked repeatedly about how much MIL enjoyed playing the dominoes game called Forty-two, which was shown on the MAIN schedule 3x per week and is NEVER shown on the Platinum Plus schedule, and which they very specifically stated they would make sure she got to play. They also ignore the fact that we talked very specifically about my concern that she would get lost trying to get all the way down to the main activity room by herself and discussed the need for her to have a scooter because it was too far for her to walk. The area where they hold their once daily platinum plus activity is right around the corner from MIL's apartment. She can find her own way there quite easily and doesn't need a scooter to go that far. But, "we only said we'd get her to the Platinum Plus activities" is now their story and they are sticking to it. As for the non-events on the health center calendar: According to the administrator, the "current events" activity on the health center calendar would have happened except that the volunteer that leads current events on the weekend was unexpectedly called out of town. The "worship services" on that calendar was a reference to the worship services happening in the Platinum Plus area (as if any one living in the Health Center could POSSIBLY have made it up there since it is at least a 5 minute walk by a healthy person!) The "social hour" was a reference to the fact that, about 3PM the nurse came around and gave each resident a cookie and some cranberry juice! As for the non-events on the Main Calendar: their story now is that "our independent residents lead most of the events that are scheduled and, if they decide not to hold them, we ask them to let us know so we can revise the calendar but, if they don't, that is nothing the Meridian can do." And, as for scheduled afternoon game time that didn't happen in the Platinum Plus wing: "our staff member was there at the scheduled time to lead the activity but none of the residents showed up, so after a few minutes, she left and went to take care of other duties." As I said, they're covering their a**es! As the situation now stands, MIL is back in her apartment and we have been told that they will "remind her of all activities, including those in the main building, when they go in to give her medications." They will also tell her where the activity is happening (as if she can possibly find it on her own) and that, IF a staff member "has time", one will walk her down to occasional activities in the main building. I would bet a million bucks that no staff member will ever have time!!!! Bottom line, she will be left to vegetate in her room until we can move her out. The only reason we even looked in Temple was that Austin seemed so expensive and, as one went further out from Austin the prices seemed to drop. We figured we could afford the time and gas to drive 50 miles to/from Temple once or twice a week more easily than the prices of similar places in Austin. BAD PLAN! Obviously the staff at these places need to know that family members can and will drop in at any time of the day or night! Otherwise some of them are going to take advantage of the fact that they can pretty much lie to you with impunity. I don't want to file a lawsuit or bring other legal action against the Meridian as long as MIL is still basically in their control. No telling how they might take it out on her! Further, a legal action would probably be unavailing because all the promises were made verbally --- nothing in the written contract about them. Once MIL is out though, I intend to sic the state on them for running an unlicensed assisted living facility and also to post bad reviews at every location I can find. Meantime, we're still looking for a good situation for MIL in or near Austin that is somewhere within reach of our budget.

Outside playing, my busyness seems to come and go. But there's nothing like a day spent with other women and my kids' peers to remind me how good I really have it. My kids are healthy even though they're a lot of work (and they aren't little!) my parents are mentally and mostly physically healthy and alive and nearby if frail and 90+, I have a pretty supportive DH, my living room does not have a foot (or 6!) of water in it, I can kind of choose my hours, I don't run my Roomba with a new puppy in the house (has everyone seen that story?) etc. robo, your grandmother is very perceptive! With the caregivers I can go back to being a daughter mostly. My next step is to hire a maintenance service to look after the house (things like checking the gutters and basement and tending to the issues that arrise), because I spent a week mentally berating a sibling for thinking that "that leak isn't so bad" while I sucked up gallons of water with my floor machine. I don't mind the cleaning as much as the berating: one is execise, the other is bad for my spirit. Yes, another option would be to move them out of the house, but who are we kidding? Today, of course, brings a new issue: the hospital wouldn't do a "full admit", but "admit for observation". Argh. Medicare and I have a love-hate relationship. I don't do that kind of bookkeeping well.

Cathy, we were thinking about you, and agreed that next time we'll try to plan far enough in advance to have you come along, we missed you. Lars, when you do come to Michigan, we'll definitely have to have a get together, either here or in Chicago or SOMEWHERE, we can't let you come this far and not meet everyone! writersblock, the crust is a mixture of a one pound bag offrozen hash brown potatoes, one egg and salt and pepper. I press it into a buttered springform pan, mine is a 9 inch, and then add the filling and bake. My oldest daughter is celiac, so I'm getting better at gluten free cooking, even for other people, LOL. stir_fryi, that's my Grandma's recipe and the trick is to not overbake or they get crisp, like gingersnaps instead of staying chewy. The recipe was been very popular here over the last few years, then kind of dwindled away. Here it is, my favorite cookie since I was a child. Chewy Molasses Cookies (Annie CF) 1 1/2 cups of shortening (I use half and half with butter, but all butter makes them too crispy for my taste) 1 cups granulated sugar 1 cup dark brown sugar 2 eggs 3/4 cup of dark molasses 4 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons ginger 1 teaspoon ground cloves Chopped crystalized ginger, optional, to taste. I used about half a cup, finely chopped and wish I'd have used more but I love ginger Coarse sugar or turbinado sugar for rolling Cream the shortening and sugars. Add the molasses and eggs and mix until well blended. Sift the flour (yeah right, I don't, LOL) and measure 4 1/2 cups into a separate bowl. Add the spices, salt, and baking soda and whisk to combine. Turn the mixer to low or stir, and add the flour slowly until well mixed. Stir in the chopped ginger and chill the dough for at least an hour. After the dough has chilled for an hour, roll tablespoonfuls of the dough into balls and roll the balls in the coarse sugar to completely coat. Place the dough balls about an inch apart on a greased or parchment-lined cookie sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes in a 350 degree oven. The cookies will puff up and crack. When the cookies are done the cracks should still look a little wet, but the outside should look dry. They'll "fall" a little as they cool, let them sit a couple of minutes on the sheet before you try to move them to cooling racks. Peppi, we love having Emma and you here, and your Dad too. All I have to do is find a "babysitter" for the dogs, the cows, the horses and the chickens and we'll be right there! (grin) And, as Peppi mentioned, we had beef stew the first night. Maybe not special company food, but something that could sit in the oven and give me some time to visit instead of "hands on". I felt strangely bereft, I must admit! I think it was the abuptness of the loss of connection, and the ominous "This domain is no longer taking connections" (or words to that effect) that scared me - I thought iVillage has decided that we were not longer worth supporting.

But GardenWebs were very reassuring when I did work out how to email them, and it was clear that something technical had gone wrong, and it was just a matter of patience till they worked out how to fix it.

Glad to be back!

The message we got about not being "Authorized" to use the site reminds me of the old days when Spike was running the site. If anyone used bad words in a post, they got sent to Disney and sometimes had to wait a while before they could return. We had some pretty funny posts as a result.

And speaking of Spike ... I saved this post about him, but I don't remember who wrote it. Whoever it was, thanks for the laugh.

When I first saw references to "Spike" it was regarding messages that didn't get posted for various reasons, and I assumed that, as in a newspaper office, stories and articles that don't get used are stuck on a spike - a long nail, mounted vertically on a cast iron stand - so they're said to have been "spiked." Since Sr Hernandez has the last word, as the editor does, it seems reasonable to call him Spike. Or it could be that he has hair that stands straight up from his head. Or, a crocodile bit off his hand and they'd run out of hooks. Or, he's into body piercing. ??? -- (from ReaderÂs Paradise posting)

Love the story about Spike, sarah canary!

Wonder if the break in service was caused by the computer 'worm' that was supposedly unleashed on April 1st? If so, it was not a very pleasant joke on us.

My email address is on the 'My Page' site.
As someone with little computer 'savvy' I wonder why different information appeared on our various screens?
I just got a blank screen with "Services for this domain have been discontinued." in the top left hand corner. Very off-putting as I tried to hunt around via Google to search for an address to contact, with no luck.
Could someone please tell me the correct address for the Web Master.
Living in an area and among people who have little interest in books or reading and not being part of any other similar on-line group, this is the one place I can learn about/discuss books. You all add another dimension to my day-to-day life and would be sadly missed.

I got in and could read messages, but when I tried to post a reply, there was an advertisment obscuring the posting box.

I wonder if it depends on the browser and version which error we got?

Over on the cooking forum some people decided to hook up on Facebook so they could communicate in case this happened again.

The Glyphs have gone through several owners over the years.
A few of you might remember about 9 or 10 yrs ago when the site changed hands & there were a lot of problems. At that time Robin was very active here & she found an alternate place for us all to 'meet' She maintained things well but things kept happening to the sites, more changes & then finally RP settled into what it has become for the last few years.

Alas Robin disappeared as has Janalyn, they have gone on with their lives - but are missed.!

I, too, got the "services for this domain have been discontinued" message both here and when I tried to Google the site. On Google as well, when I tried to enter their RP sites, I got a list of Mayan stuff. I did get back on RP once, but then the discontinued message reappeared. Gosh, I'm glad to be back in communication with all of you.

Can we get to the home page if the site is down? My e-mail is cnewlen at bellsouth dot net. Please don't lose me; I'm bereft without you.

I missed the down time and knew nothing about the interruption, but just like Netla, I couldn't post when I did check back in and I was confused. Glad to see everyone here and the site intact!

Netla, do you know if it's possible to set up a private group on Facebook? I do have an account there, but I'm very new to it and am not sure how we could use it as a back up spot to meet.

I, too, was bereft when I couldn't log on over the weekend. I got the message that perhaps I was not authorized to use the site and a password may be needed to log into it. I wondered wildly if perhaps in some strange way I had posted something that got me Disneyed, although I couldn't think of anything unexceptional I had written.

I am so glad to be back onto RP and in contact with you all. My email is posted on my member page so I'm always available that way.

So happy to be back with you all again! :)

Sheriz, I'm also getting to know my way around Facebook, but I did some research and apparently you can have three kinds of groups: open, closed and secret. The open ones anyone can join (we don't want that), closed ones are visible but you have to apply or be invited to join, and the secret are invisible to all but members and you have to be invited by an administrator to join. I think the closed type would suit us best?

I don't know anything about Facebook. Because of a problem I had at this site many years ago when Spike was in charge, I hesitate to put my e-mail address out here. However, I don't mind you guys having it, so for me, I supposed the best thing to do is when I get some time, send the ones I know, privately, my e-mail address. Does this make sense?

Although I rarely post on RP, I too was devastated at the blunt little message which appeared on my screen. Racking my brain for what I might have done to deserve such exile, I could only remember suggesting love poems for Valentine's Day. Was that too risque? Did it break the rules?
Part of my day includes checking with you all at RP to get your suggestions and comments. I guess I could live without it but hope it never comes to that. This morning I decided to try one more time and there you were!

Mary, you should be safe enough putting your email address in the 'My Page' thing as no-one can actually SEE it and although they can get in touch with you, it isn't until you choose to get back to them that they will then see your address. Of course I can understand it could be unpleasant getting rude/distasteful messages from people you would rather not deal with.
I must say the emails I have received through 'glyphs' have always been polite and usually no more than asking a question . . . and often from 'lurkers' who's names I have never seen on the screen.
I have no experience of Facebook although it seems everyone under the age of 30 in the UK has a slot there.;-)

Spring has barely sprung, but I am thinking about another bookmark exchange this holiday season. Yes, it is very early but everything needs to be in place by September or October, well before the holiday crush. Just to give people a chance to think about their own participation, i.e. sharing their snail mail addy. It was quite fun when we did it a few years back. What does everything think?

Apparently I missed the recent scare, but I often get messages that I'm "not authorized to view" or something like that. I always figure it's a problem with my peripatetic Internet access, and so far that's been the case, RP reappearing in a day or so. But I, too, would be bereft if RP disappeared for ever. I have just updated my email address on my home page.

It is true that we can't see another person's e-mail address on their My Page; we can only send them e-mail if their address is there. So, I will use the format that I think astrokath started. My e-mail address is: fsmithson1 at comcast dot net. I'm also going to collect them for future emergency purposes.

Although I tend to lurk here more than I post, I too was lost without RP. Another suggestion would be to join goodreads.com where you can start groups and add threads.

Just another suggestion if Facebook isn't your thing.

Siobahn, I would love to do another bookmark exchange! In fact, I used the bookmark you sent me last time when I was reading the book before the one I am on now (I choose a different bookmark for each book *g*)
It doesn't have to be expensive - many that I received and cherish were hand made - and it was lots of fun. I wrote the name of each person on the bookmark they sent and thus can remember them when I use it.

I'm not familiar with Goodreads, but since it is topic-specific, it might be a better back up spot than Facebook. I don't know. If anyone wants to set something up in either place, count me in.

I spend quite a bit of time on Facebook but it only works if everyone is on it. I'm into a bookmark exchange as well. What kind of bookmarks? I'm not really the crafty type.

I find the threads are loading quite slowly again since the Forum came back. I'm having to go back to clicking on the address to get quicker results. Is anyone else having this trouble?

Not only are the threads loading slowly for me, I am having a devil of time getting a message to post. I've tried several times and was sent back to the login page each time, although I had logged in already, with the result of losing what I had written.

I will try one more time and see if it takes.

For the last few days I've been having the same problem as Frieda mentions above.

To log in I have to now go down to the 'Post a Message' thing at the bottom of the page, even then it takes several 'goes' before it works. Otherwise I am told to enter name and email which I don't really want to do on an 'open' site like this. Are others having problems? . . .I suppose if you are you can't get in touch . . .

I have been having problems also. I have about given up on RP! I have been here for years, but do participate in several other book forums where there are very active readers & there are no problems.

Two things: I am with Carolyn and Frieda in that these pages are taking forever to load and appear since the gardenweb issues. I wait and I wait. I had thought it was the computers I am using, but evidently not.

You do not have to sign on using the e-mail box, etc. Just go back to the main RP page that lists all the threads and at the bottom you will see a tiny "sign in" and you can log on in the usual fashion without revealing any e-mail address. That is what I have been doing.

Maybe the slow loading is keeping folks away from RP. It has been rather quiet of late....

My pages are loading okay today (Tuesday).

Does anyone else have the problem that the names following "Posted by" are too faded to read? I find that if I click on a name then come back, the names on that particular thread are the original, bright, readable color. This has been going on for some time. I only see it on Glyphs, not the regular Gardenweb forums.

Did we ever come up with an alternate venue in case this one goes away?

Mine are still loading slowly. Several days ago I sent a message to RP about it. They replied asking if it was still occurring, and I responded that it was better that day. Not so now.

I've had no problem accessing the site, and the pages load very quickly for me. Like Rosefolly, I have noticed the names are nearly invisible and I have to scroll over them to see who has posted, but other than that, things seems to be working fine on my end.

Carolyn I don't mind sharing - I have participated for several years at Delphi which is in some way similar to GardenWeb in that it has multiple forums going on. However their forums have a host & are monitored & the rules are set up for each forum by that host.
Delphi has several reader forums including Mystery & Thrillers, Booklovers, Book Sharks just to name a few.
The forums tend to be much more active than RP and are friendly in that all comments & books discussed are responded to directly and opinions given.

Booklovers just had a discussion on a book by Linwood Barclay & in June they have selected - by popular vote-to read & discuss Heart & Soul by Maeve Binchy.
Delphi probably has more than just these 3 readers forums, but they are the ones that I use most.

Delphi has 3 membership levels from free to Plus membership which I have because on some of the forums we post photos etc. Delphi also has forums for fancy sigs that you are invited to use. I participate in about 6 of their forums on a regular basis. They have some with cute names that are just for getting together similar I suppose to the Kitchen Table here at GardenWeb. They also have forums on various sewing techniques, knitting etc....the list is endless.

Those that know me know that my favorite genre is a good mystery or thriller and that forum has been a goldmine for me introducing me to authors that I had never heard of before. The other forums have recommended books that I would never have heard of much less read....and that given all the books that we mention here.

Sometimes I can not log into this site. I have a high speed internet connection, so I don't think the problem is at my end. This week, for example, I wanted to contribute to a thread on Wednesday and Thursday. I tried several times at various times during the day, but couldn't get in.

I have tried accessing this site for over a week now at various venues, using computers in 3 different libraries, in 2 different U.S. states. (I am traveling, now). It is still taking far too long to load each page here. My patience is wearing thin. :-)

Other than when the site was down, I have had none of the problems mentioned in this thread. I wonder what the differences are?

Hmm. I have had absolutely no problems accessing this site over the past week or two. I wonder why some of you guys have?

It must be so frustrating to have it take so long. I hope it doesn't push some of you away.... I like our group!
