I really enjoyed participating last time and wish I could join in with you all this year. I am anticipating relocating to another area and I think the moving, etc. will take up pretty much all of my time. If things change, I'll be happy to participate. It was fun last time and the local Post Office was surprised at the number of mainly extra US friends I was buying stamps for. I am not much into cutting, gluing and sticking (shades of kindergarten) but will try and look out for something local and interesting.

Yes, that's right. It's a lot of fun when the bookmarks start arriving from all over. I started a thread about it, although it is very early.

Veer mentioned looking for something local. What a great idea. If we cannot find a local bookmark or if we are making them, should we include a local postcard? Can someone give me a bit of insight about last time? I missed it. Did you enclose Christmas cards? A note?

Last time I put mine in a Christmas card, but it's not essential.

I believe I sent some postcards also. I was looking for bookmarks and the postcards were so terrific I had to get some. I will probably put mine in a card because I have loads sitting around here and honestely I don't send a whole lot anymore, so this will be a good excuse to put them to use. But nothing is essential, it's all just for fun.

PAM - are you trying to tell me that a postcard isn't a bookmark in and of itself? What about tickets from sporting events?

I'm in. I've done swaps of all kinds...the mail is so much more fun to receive during those times.

YES veronicae! They are all awesome bookmarks! In fact, one of my favorite quotes is: "Why spend a dollar on a bookmark? Why not use the dollar AS a bookmark?" I use everything from photos to candy wrappers to airline tickets to empty or almost empty seed packets. I'm just trying to find out what folks did last year.

I wrote a long & detailed account of how this worked when we did the exchange before...however my message was blocked-no idea why-& it was not allowed...I know they have had problems recently but I did not say or do anything...but I did try to explain how the exchange worked in the past...I will see if this go through!

I've received a number of responses, thank you all! I'm sorry I haven't responded personally to everyone, but I want to acknowledge that the bookmark exchange is off to a great start. I am guessing that we will end up with 20 or so participants. Before the list is finalized this fall, I will be sure to contact everyone individually to make sure they still want to participate and their information is correct. So, this summer think about making/gathering/collecting 20 bookmarks of some sort. And feel free to sign up anytime with me at silence is golden 4 at hotmail dot com.

I still have all my bookmarks from the last time too and everytime I use one of them, I remember the fun I had making mine to send out and how much fun I had anticipating what I might receive in return.

PAM - I should have added a smiley face for that posting...my current "bookmarks" are a post card, one of those photo holiday cards of a family baby, a ticket from a basket ball game and a drugstore receipt. No class at all, just what was handy at the time. But I do love using photos of special people and special times...nice to see their faces when I open a book!

Veronicae, you and I share a common definition in our bookmarks. One of my favorites during cold weather is a postcard of a lake where I love to sail. And family photos, especially the candid ones, are another favorite. But at the moment, (pausing to look in my book), it is a Burpee seed packet for "big mama" sauce tomatoes!

I am so sorry I can't join as I will retire soon and leave my computer at work and my present e-mail address. Will get a computer at home, of course. I collect bookmarks and my favourites are the Frank Lloyd Wright bookmarks from MoMa, gifts from American friends. I just checked them at the MoMa site and had no idea they were so expensive, 18 dollars! I also have a Charles Rennie Macintosh bookmark in the same style. They are too nice to lose in a book and actually not quite flat enough. I normally use whatever I find, very often nursery plant labels. I have given away bookmarks made from a felled elm in the Linnaeus Botanic Garden here in Uppsala, a tree Linnaeus may have planted.

If you would like to participate strictly by snail mail, I am happy to accommodate - I can just mail you the final list in the fall. I have a couple of FLW bookmarks, also a gift. Lovely but impractical as they are thick metal with edges that would damage the pages of a book.

I have sent a personal email to everyone who has responded so far (sorry it took me so long) so if you emailed me you should have a response. I hope I have not forgotten anyone, please let me know. And remember, sign up anytime - the fall is far, far away -

This may become an obsession beginning so early. I was at St Patrick's cathedral yesterday for the installation of the new bishop...stopped at the gift shop...immediately into my vision came the rack of bookmarks...the same thing at Barnes and Noble before the mass. It's as if I am already on the hunt!

My daughter-in-law was on holiday in Greece, and brought me home a beautiful bookmark. I really don't want to use it - afraid I will lose it!

Veronica I know what you mean. I was at the Kensington Palace the year after Diana died & bought a beautiful leather bookmark there with brass trim & it is gone & I have no idea where. I used it, & maybe should have put it away, as I have no idea what happened to it. I love the leather bookmarks that they sell everywhere in England & have bought thenm wherever I am that sell them-Castles, Museums-Cathedrals-just love them.

I was having a wonderful vacation with my DH :-) Our second (and I hope not last) trip to Vietnam... I did get one bookmark, as a gift for a friend :-) It is made of brass from a workshop that provides employment for handicapped people. A bit expensive for the Christmas Exchange though :-) Hmmmm....you've given me an idea ...

Last time the bookmarks ranged from handmade (by the giver or purchased) to free give-aways from the giver's favorite bookstore. I still have many of the bookmarks. It was so much fun to open the envelopes and see what people had come up with.

Siobhan, do you have a feel for the count yet? We are going on vacation next month, and I thought I'd look for something different.

So far I have fifteen names - my guess would be the final count will be around twenty.
