This animated book short film is gorgeous

Was strolling around the web a bit today, and came across this animated short film based on (I think) a book called The Fantastic Flying Books....

As an avid reader, I can attest to this capturing the joyous feeling I associate with the act of reading and the imagery is spot on.

It's about 15 mins long but I think I'm safe in saying that most of you will like it.

I watched about half of it, but I can't get sound on it or on other Youtube stuff I've tried lately. Help, anyone?

Robert, I just want to say bravo for your concern about the environment and all the creatures that become a part of our gardens and our lives. Apart from the animals we see almost daily such as the quail, rabbits, squirrels, hummmingbirds, lizards and frogs, this last week we had a bobcat in the driveway, a beautiful Southern Pacific rattlesnake under a tree and a tarantula in the roses. I grow some large plants of marjoram that the bees are crazy about, and they also love the butterfly bushes and many of the roses. It just wouldn't be a real garden without all that life and activity! It goes without saying that I garden organically so that nothing gets hurt. annececilia, it's so sweet of you to say that. The rose, by the way, is one of the few modern roses I have, other than some Austins. It's Burgundy Iceberg, which has been a great rose for me. It doesn't mind the heat and is pretty well disease-free. It blends well with the older roses and the color is beautiful. Ingrid

Just listened to a piece on NPR this morning in which it was mentioned that there are still shelters that sell dogs and cats to research facilities. The practice is called pound seizure. They only keep the strays for the requisite 5 days, so if you don't get there in time, you are out of luck. I think they said only 17 states outlaw the practice. Maybe we should all check with our local shelters and ask if they do this. One person on the show said she got such an evasive answer that she knew her shelter followed that practice. Depending on what you find out, you could also organize to have the laws in your state changed. I will link a website I found and here is what it said about Virginia laws. The first part worried me, but the second part appears to ban pound seizure. "Ã¯Â¿Â½ 3.2-6547. Acceptance of animals for research or experimentation; prohibition No person shall use or accept for the purpose of medical research or experimentation any animal bearing a tag, license, or tattooed identification, unless the individual who owns such animal consents thereto in writing. Ã¯Â¿Â½ 3.2-6557. Animal control officers and humane investigators; limitations; records; penalties A. No animal control officer, humane investigator, humane society or custodian of any pound or animal shelter shall: (i) obtain the release or transfer of an animal by the animal's owner to such animal control officer, humane investigator, humane society or custodian for personal gain; or (ii) give or sell or negotiate for the gift or sale to any individual, pet shop, dealer, or research facility of any animal that may come into his custody in the course of carrying out his official assignments. No animal control officer, humane investigator or custodian of any pound or animal shelter shall be granted a dealer's license. Violation of this subsection is a Class 1 misdemeanor. Nothing in this section shall preclude any animal control officer or humane investigator from lawfully impounding any animal pursuant to Ã¯Â¿Â½ 3.2-6569. thanks oceanna, I posted pic's of our master many times. it's quite unsophisticated and a tad funky, as compared to the beautiful masters posted on this forum. But, it's cozy and friendly and has a lot of 'us' in the room...It has an old family antique wash stand at the foot of our bed. It was over 100 years old and very dark oak, so I spray painted it green years ago (what was I thinking?) Then we stripped it, and re-finished it to match our old furniture, and used it for inspiration to make two QS oak end tables. Do you remember the perfume cabinet we made? We also made the perfume cabinet to match the end tables. Like I said, it's funky, but it's uniquely 'us.' If you want to laugh, I'm currently working on a design for an lyre inspired end table, for the living room...I asked Cliff, how much walnut do we have for the table? He said, holding up two fingers -- "you know, you need two husbands, the he put up another finger and said THREE, three, you need three husbands!" LOL...Oh, what fun! In keeping with the thread theme... see the two giraffe pillows on the bed, also the stained glass in the windows -- man in the moon holding the teddy bear is another gift that we made for another grandson, again I shamelessly kept it... this is before we made the end tables.

Gotta love Raymond Carver's Short Cuts. (The movie was really good, too. It had an all-star cast: Lily Tomlin, Jack Lemmon, Andie McDowell, Julianne Moore, Robert Downey Jr., etc.) I also really enjoyed Any Small Thing Can Save You: A Bestiary by Christina Adam. Each chapter is about humans interacting with a different animal-one for every letter of the alphabet. My favorite story was about this woman in her fifties who had been horse-crazy when she was a girl, until she read The Red Pony by John Steinbeck (that book ended my horse craziness, too). One day, she decides to buy a Tennessee Walking horse. And so she goes out and does it. Her husband thinks she's nuts, but she's happy. It gives me hope that I, too, will own a horse someday. I like that she still had the capability to surprise herself. All the stories in that book are gems of this caliber.

Hmm. Assuming that your speakers/volume are on and up to proper levels, and not on mute...

On You tube, on the bottom left of black screen, you'll see a symbol of a horn (right-facing triangle thing) on bottom row right by the timing of movie. Hover your mouse over that, and a scale should pop up allowing you to adjust volume. (I bet you've already tried this though.)

Another thing to check is the volume on your computer (unrelated to web). On your main computer screen, go to the bottom right and there you should see a little row of symbols, one of which is a symbol of a stereo speaker (triangle thing). Left click on that, and you should get a scale which you can increase or lower your volume (move it up and down). Also, check it's not on mute.

Perhaps that might help. Or not. :-)

Thanks, but no, it isn't muted and the volume is up. Not sure I have any other feature I use with sound.

Hmm. Then I'm afraid I'm not sure.

Luckily, there is no speaking - only music so at least it's easy to get the gist of the whole thing... :-)

This may sound silly, but does your computer have speakers? My computer for work has no speakers, which has turned out to be a big mistake as I need to use it for training that requires sound. I have to connect external speakers.

Very nice, but I did have some panicky feelings when the books started blowing off the porch in the beginning.

I had seen this before but forgot what it was called so was pleased to see it again.

A possible solution to the sound problem is that like Siobhan, my computer at work has no speakers, and since the powers that be occasionally have something they want us to watch/listen to online, they gave us each a set of headphones that we can plug into the computer tower. Maybe that would work for you Carolyn.

Yes, thanks, I do have speakers and they have worked. It is only in the past few weeks that I don't have sound. You all are the best!

Carolyn - you might try re-installing your browser and plug-ins. For a while, I had the same problem, then my browser came out with an update, which required reinstalling everything, and after that everything worked again. I have no clue why, but I figure it can't hurt to try re-installation.
